Top Down View of Orbit (Tutorial 5) | GMAT (NASA's General Mission Analysis Tool)
In this video, I show you a quick trick on how to get a top down flat orbital plane view of an elliptical orbit. This allows you to see the true shape of the orbit undisturbed by the location of the camera. The tool that is used in this video for simulation is NASA's General Mission Analysis Tool, or "GMAT", freely available to the public.

Solving a Hohmann Transfer Problem using GMAT (NASA's General Mission Analysis Tool)

In this video, we use GMAT to solve a Hohmann transfer orbit problem that starts from a circular parking orbit around earth to a higher final orbit around earth. In the previous video, I calculated beforehand the delta V values for both burns and in this video we set up a mission sequence so that GMAT will iterate and solve for the delta V values for both burns for you automatically. Hi appreciate your videos. I still need some help: I am running a lot of aseq analysis at different Ma and Re automatically. Sometimes the analysis does not converge which is not a big problem. However, if that happens, there is no line for this AoA in the output file. I would like to have a line for that showing the result of the last iteration step or at least NaN or something. Is that possible?

hey, cool video. I have a problem. Every time I plot something on PltLib, it shows the first plot, but whenever I try to plot again using pplo, it doesn't get updated, it is stuck with the same plot. I can't even close the PltLib tab. I would have to close Xfoil to do that. Any solution to this? Thank you.

The values of the cartesian parameters keeps changing, does that mean that those values are for respective coordinate system for the same epoch? Please clarify.

So I tried to discover gmat today on my own with the help of tutorials and had some difficulties through the process. Unfortunately there are not many resources about gmat on internet. I am writing this comment so if anyone else makes the same mistakes I did, it will help them. First I wrote 700 km for the sma which doesn't make any sense because the earth's radius is around 6300 km but I didn't realize it and gmat doesn't warn unfortunately. Then I tried to find the contact time with the ground station and could not get any results, lost a lot of time trying to figure out the problem. It was another stupid mistake I realized later. I wrote 1200 for the altitude of ground station thinking it as meters, apparently the unit is km and my ground station was higher than the orbit itself 🥲 So my friends be careful with the small details because gmat doesn't give any errors

Just Look at the equation for thrust: F = (m_dot • V_e) + (p_e - p_o) • A_e Where: F = Thrust m_dot = rate of mass flow of exhaust V_e = effective velocity of exhaust p_e = exit pressure of exhaust p_o = ambient pressure What this equation says, is that the thrust force generated will come down to the amount of mass you can move at a high rate, and how efficiently it’s generated. If you look at the terms to the right of the addition sign: (p_e - p_o) • A_e This relationship shows that, given the same exit pressure value, a larger ambient pressure value will yield a smaller product than would a lower one, since it’s subtracted from the exit pressure value in the equation. So what is really “required” for efficient thrust production from a rocket engine, is a large *difference* between the exit pressure of the exhaust and the ambient pressure. Plug-in whatever values you want for the other variables and solve for p_o = 0 🤷🏼‍♂️

I'm using XFOIL through python for iterative calculations and I need some way to save the cases calculated to load them later to make xfoil calculate new solutions based in the previous ones. This would be easier if python keeped xfoil open during the whole operations but then I couldn't extract the data calculated to set the new parameters to introduce them in xfoil. I'm a little bit desperate as there's almost no information of XFOIL in Internet (sarcastically every other airfoil analysis software is based on xfoil), you're the best source of information. Thanks for your help!!

Nevermind I got it, the solution was in learning how to use the pexpect or wexpect module as the subprocess module doesn't keep xfoil open. It is considerably slower but effective.

      - "NASA's own documents even say rocket propulsion won't work in a vacuum" That is a flat out LIE. My company tests rocket thrusters IN A VACUUM here on earth and we verify that they produce the thrust predicted by the 100-year old Tsiolkovsky rocket equation. We then put those same thrusters on REAL spacecraft, launch them to space and TEST THEM THERE TOO. Stop spreading lies on the internet.
