All through the West are examples of Rock Art. These are powerful cultural symbols of indigenous people that occupied the vast and varied landscape. Petroglyphs are carved, abraded, pecked and scratched into rock and cliff surfaces. Pictographs are painted on to the rocks surface. Over thousands of years the exposed rock or cliff surfaces form a patina, often referred to as desert varnish. This...

Tide Pools - Intertidal Zone on the Oregon Coast
Просмотров 888Год назад
Tides are caused by the gravitational pull of the moon and to some extant the sun. This tidal force pulls the water out, causing what is defined as a low tide. While this happens, isolated pools of water remain in the now exposed rocks, reefs and sand. Low tide exposes sea creatures like starfish/sea stars, anemones, sea squirts, chitons, limpets, crabs, mussels, fish, seaweed and other things ...
Rock Art - Petroglyphs and Pictographs - Visions of the Shaman
Просмотров 10 тыс.Год назад
Throughout the western United States, Indigenous people left signs of their culture on rock and cliff faces. Creating petroglyphs by pecking at, carving and abrading the darker outer surface of the rocks (the patina or desert varnish) these native people exposed the lighter under layer of the stone, leaving behind symbolic depictions of what was important to them. Pictographs, rather than being...

Thanks Max!
I just watched a video on the clay statues of Cyprus. The first depictions were animals. Later, these were buried and replaced with animal / human God representations.
Top production..
Thank you!
I love the ones portraying the sheep. Who knows how old the pecked one is. Awesome. Thanks.
Big Horn sheep are represented well in rock art. Maybe one of the most common petroglyphs.
These are incredibly vibrant, beautiful photographs of wild flowers across the West. It makes me want to plan a road trip in the region this summer!

Excellent, thank you!
Thanks! Rock art is so interesting!
Mark, where was the 9th image captured, with the snowy mountains across the valley?
Hi Tim, that is in the volcanic rocks near Bishop, California.
I don't believe all these are really old at all. maybe not even made by Indians. They are too pristine to have been exposed that long especially when on top of rocks fully exposed. not even covered with dust?????
I do not believe the said dates of a lot of this stuff. they could not be that clear, clean and well defined that old without upkeep. especially the fully exposed ones to weather.
I saw an Aussie documentary where an old Aboriginal guy touched up the paintings.
They were drawn last year !
Thank you for these high quality pictures. Rock art is often meant as messages from our ancestors. Sometimes to warn us for a natural disaster that is caused by a celestial body surrounded by a spiraled cloud. It causes a flood and a bombardment of meteors. Many living beings die. So the spiral picture at 52 sec may try to tell us that this spiral rolls over people. When that celestial body comes closer the shape appears as an 8 beamed star with a clear nucleus (@ 3min 30 sec) and even more close to a square cross. Sometimes as a swastika. Worldwide we find these symbols recorded in stone, clay or on animal skin. At 4 min 26 sec at the right we see a kind of eagle with sharp claws that falls from the sky. At 4 min 44 sec we see that planet connected to a giant person who is connected to a normal person. The big person maybe a diety that is from that planet. This is also told in many ancient books and legends. To learn much more about the cycle of recurring floods, the rebirth of civilizations and its timeline, ancient high technology and alien deities, read the eBook: "what I know about Nibiru". This book answers many of your questions. You can read it on every computer, tablet or smartphone. Search: about nibiru roest
I have visited Big Petroglyph canyon many times in the Mojave desert,, I used to live near it, at China Lake NWC, many of the Petroglyphs are 8 to 10 feet tall. Many obsidian artifacts, pottery, and idols in the surrounding areas and caves.
I used to live in the Mojave desert, I know where many petroglyphs and pictographs sites are. Big Petroglyph canyon is amazing 👍
Big Petroglyph canyon is spectacular!

@@markkeller6635 I've been studying petroglyphs ever since i was a young man in the 9th grade (1985) and have always found them to be interesting yet extraordinary!
Some of the rock art depictions are similar to sea anemone. What did the artists "see" in their dreams/visions to inspire such unfamiliar entities? You did a fantastic job on this video.
Thanks Linda. It would be nice to travel back in time and witness the creation of the rock art and interview the people creating it. Since that isn't possible it's considered likely that the petroglyphs and pictographs were probably created by the tribes shaman or holy men, possibly during a hallucinogenic trance. The art can be representational, depicting animals that they relied on, like big horn sheep, their hunting tools like the atlatl and bow and arrow, or humans in various configurations. There are also symbolic shapes, possibly clan symbols. Carefully carved spirals and mazes along with seemingly abstract lines and markings are very common. Once you become aware of rock art, it is all fascinating.
I lived in the high desert near all these Petroglyphs, most are from Big Petroglyph canyon and the surrounding areas
@@markkeller6635That's when the Mojave desert had rivers and savannah
That whole area once had a green lushness. If only there was a Time Machine, then we could see water rushing over Fossi Falls, see a wet China Lake and all of the surrounding areas in a much different condition.
@@markkeller6635 Me too, I have been there at fossil falls when it was raining and the falls were flowing, found petroglyphs and sites all around there, used to go out there with family and friends all the time back in the day 👍 excellent video by the way
Thank you for this lovely tour of Rock Art. This video was much better quality than I had expected. Great job!
Thanks Linda!
Quark! Das sind Tatsachenschilderungen und keine Visionen.
Antes, habían personas que tenían cuernitos, como cuernitos. He visto otros grabados así.
There are quite a few petroglyphs that show human figures with horns or antlers, all of them are very interesting.
We have a lot of it in Morocco, but some of those who have Arab thought do not want such beautiful history that symbolizes our Amazigh identity.
Interesting! I wonder if we could make out patterns of a global culture that is gone - considering the similarities across places.. iv seen stuff in Australia too... but one would have to do some serious comparisons .
I saw a rocket ship in there .
Notice that the higher ones are better quality than the low ones. I see groups of children drawing on walls. Busy parents let their children decorate.
So beautiful. Funny, I don’t see evidence of ancient aliens! How alarming! Humans did these all by themselves!
Having lived near these actual petroglyphs and finding artifacts, I know the history
On several occasions during the late 1950s and 1960s, my father, who was part Chickasaw, persuaded park rangers to show us pictographs and once a Pueblo which were closed to the public. The Pueblo had been closed due to people stealing pieces of it, graffiti and vandalism. It felt to me like sacred space. And non native were actually blasting them out of rock all over the Southwest to sell or collect them. In the process many were destroyed. The pictographs were hidden away along streams or in canyons and required some hiking. Their beauty took my breath away. All made such an impression on me that all these decades later I can still relive these experiences in my mind.
Sharon, thank you, that was a great story of your experiences. Rock art is really special to people that can enjoy and appreciate it. Unfortunately there has been a long history of ignorant people vandalizing these sacred sites. Luckily for us there are still many pristine petroglyph and pictograph sites to enjoy, it just takes education and effort to locate them.
Interesting petroglyphs. Thanks for this.
I'm glad you liked them. Petroglyphs are fascinating! I have another petroglyph/pictograph video also ruclips.net/video/__wRpur3sDg/видео.html

Hi Shannon, the video was filmed/photographed at Newport at Yaquina Head, two locations in Lincoln City including Roads End and Cape Kiwanda in Pacific City.
Is that the Ark of the Covenant?
that would be fun but unfortunately it isn't

I have known Mark Keller for over 50 years. Great photographer. Very Humble. No motor drive, no auto exposure, those were the days! Always spot on. Action, lighting, formatting, all. His short film, A Time to Surf, captures 5 decades and more. Some of my friends, “Legends”, events, scenics, and more. Even a few nice shots of yours truly. I look forward to many more of Mark’s wonderful memories on film!
Thanks Rusty!!! Both of us started surfing around the same time. We were both fortunate to be involved in and actively participate in one of surfings most evolutionary periods, the shortboard revolution of the late 60’s. In surfing’s growth and innovation since then, major changes to the sport/art form took place. In my role as a photographer, I was able to witness, first hand, Rusty’s development and evolution as a surfer and his progression into the top tier of shapers/board designers and craftsmen. More than belonging to the Hall of Fame, Rusty is a great humanitarian and represents the best that one can achieve in any field!!!
