F for the cables management
@@Obi-Juan_Kenobi It's great system for harsh field recording conditions when you want to be fast and flexible. Not so suitable for film sets, there the normal way is better because of booming.
I was looking for you...
thanks for the video, i learn alot from this
Thank you for this video. Nice to see someone using Sennheiser mics. I use the Sennheiser mics of the (older) modular ME-line, which need phantom power and a power-adapter (K6 or K6P). I love Sennheiser mics because they sound very clear, neutral and are very sensitive. They work perfectly with my Mixpree6 II in any situation. Please keep going to show technical aspects, too. Peace.
Thanks
I love how you explain your process and recording sounds in general. Thank you for Taking the time to explain details, and the cable trick as well!
Hi! Can I use the audio from your video for part of my podcast? It's called Popcorn Forest.
@@uiscestudio Sure, go for it!
Fantastic video ... I loved it. Thank you for sharing your insight and your techniques!
What level did you have the Sony on?
Not quite sure anymore, but it was certainly between 3 and 5. I never have it over 5.
what is your take on binaural audio recording. also what are you doing with all those recordings? I used to use iOS app called Ambience which is unfortunatelly discontinued with unique looping option and library where you can upload your own recordings. There is now so many apps for sounds but I did not find anything close to Ambience app. Closest to my liking is myNoise. Subbed, great content.
@@mike_qbik I haven't done binaural yet, but what I have listened, it sounds great if you want the feeling that you are in the same space where the audio was captured. Most of my recordings are intended for movies, games, etc., so I sell them online (you can check frostwaveaudio.com, there is even a free sound pack). Still, a lot of recordings are just waiting in folders, waiting for a meaning of life 😎
Great information. I wish somebody told me this stuff years ago.
Really interesting, and great sound! <3
This need to be asmr for sleep
I don't know but there is a program called Audacity which is generally used for sound editing. Have you used this program before or do you know what the difference is with the paid option?
@@ReyhanHamdi I started with Audacity a long time ago. Haven't used it since then, so I don't know what it's capable right now, but back then it was quite basic. I'm sure you can do the things done in this video with Audacity too, as these are the basics. And it's not really about the DAW, you can do amazing stuff with any DAW when you get to know one well.
@@niklaseuren Hmm thank you so much 😊
Audacity actually has a pretty strong noise removal system for a freeware! Similar to what Niklas shows here, you select a portion of your noise for profile, and then apply your reduction amount. Audacity is quite basic, but its useful in a pinch. Audacity is a multitrack editor but you can use it as a simple two track editor which is helpful also. It even has a feature where you can generate 'noise' files from importing any 'RAW' data into it, so png or jpeg files etc. which can be quite fun!
@@xcryosonx Wow thank you so much
This is interesting. I bought a zoom h4n for recording music and it opened my algorithm up to field recording. Very cool. One thing i noticed English isnt your native language and I applaud your ability to speak it as well as you do. It sounds like you learned from reading. I hear its a bit chaotic to learn, and I can understand why. None of our rules are consistent. A tip i wanted to share with you is in the word "scenario", the "c" is silent. Like a movie "scene", pronounced "seen". Honestly it makes no sense why we do that, but we also do it in the word "scent" and that's pronounced the same as "cent" and "sent". It really makes no "sense" lol.
@@EremEdition Thanks for the tip! I actually started to learn English almost from the beginning as I was living in different countries in Asia, and I speak English with my siblings, but still I understand that I speak English like a Finn 😆. Finns usually learn English early in the school, as it's mandatory, but we are usually not so great with pronounciation.
Beautiful.
Hey, Went through all of your field recording parts, good stuff. In this part was a little surprised when you used the track fader to increase the audio level, this would commonly be seen as bad practice (going over 0dB) due to risk of digital clipping, lack of headroom, etc. Anyhow, maybe I am missing something, so wanted to ask if there is any particular reason you used the fader?
Thank you for watching! I guess the track fader is a habit, have been using it forever, mixing it with the other ways to control the volume. As long it works 😎
@@niklaseuren Thanks for the response! Again, thanks for the good content!
Gain staging is a tricky subject, but like Niklas says, in the end whatever gets you the result youre looking for. Also, clipping in and of itself does not usually spell the end for audio processing or mastering, it really depends on what you're doing and what you want out of the sound. Use your ears. Its always helpful to ask the question, can I hear the difference or does it sound bad? While its true that digital clipping doesnt tend to sound good, its more of a guideline than a hard and fast rule, I repeat, use your ears.
What benefit does the headset you use give you while listening to the sounds you record in the field? Also, what kind of headphone do you use when you come home and listen to the recordings at the computer?
@@ReyhanHamdi The MDR-7506's sound quite natural, and that's important. They don't hurt my ears, which is another important factor. I learned to use them while working on film sets, and love how flexible they are to use. In my studio I use MDR-7510's. They are very accurate, and I can hear everything, every little detail, which is crucial when I edit the recordings, or when I do other sound related work. I would not use them on field, as they make my ears tired, and they are not as flexible.
@@niklaseuren Is it ok to use mdr 7506 on computer? mdr 7510 is not a headset currently on sale
@@ReyhanHamdi They should work fine. Used them in studio before.
@@niklaseuren Thank you very much for the information you provided. Are you planning to make a video about selling the audio you record?
@@ReyhanHamdi Yes, it's on my to-do list! Few big points: When selling, try to think what your customers would like to do with your sounds. That way you know how much to process sounds etc. Metadata is a must, I use BWF Metaedit. Check UCS metadata system. wav-files, 24bit, 48kHz or 96kHz are the standard. Explore what kind of cover art others make, and create your own style with any Photoshop-like software. Sell in your own site, or use platforms like A Soundeffect or Bandcamp.
I love the wind and snow skittering around. I was listening without watching, the sound of the skier approaching really confusing me until I realized what it was, what a cool sound. Great recording!
Very cool video! The only thing not so cool was the cable knots.
@@soundstudiopioch6777 Thank you! On a film set I have never used the knots, as they would be awkward when booming etc, but when field recording, I find them really quick and handy. Learned it in a film school and it stuck.
Great vibe!
@@Danheim Thank you!
For more affordable software... DAW - Audacity - Free Dynamic EQ - Wave F6 Video - Davinci Nice video, it's good so see how you do post. Many youtubers just magically have perfect audio.
Thank you for making the effort to be detailed. I love just sitting and standing still, and just listening. I think that's the best part. How long do you normally listen for? You live in a very beautiful country. In Sydney it's very hard to be free from traffic rumble, airplanes and such.
@@MattJoyce01 Thank you! Normally I try to listen at least 20min, to get a better understanding of the soundscape, but it of course depends on what I'm listening. If the place is very quiet, as it's here during the winter, then I listen longer as there are not too many sounds around, and it's good to wait for the good ones. Sydney is beautiful, I was there in 2001, from Sydney to Gold Coast, and would love to visit Australia one day again. In southern Finland the traffic and other noise is also present, but luckily the northern Finland is more quiet.
The best ever in the world
Hi, does this support microtonal tuning via tuning scripts in Kontakt 6? My specialty is composing music in just intonation, and while I am not familiar with the full history of the jouhikko / tagelharpa I have the suspicion that this class of folk instruments like the kantele and jouhikko are traditionally tuned in typical JI limit systems. I'm interested in writing music accurate to what a tagelharpa would sound like amongst other justly tuned virtual instruments as opposed to having everything in 12-TET.
@@jard Yes, it does support the microtonal tuning via tuning scripts. The script has to be in the last script slot, so move the last three scripts one step left (cut-paste) to make the last slot available. If it's not what you are after, contact me via niklaseu@gmail.com and you get your money back. I'm also interested to hear what kind of music you can make with it!
@@niklaseuren Hi Niklas, I purchased the instrument and loaded it in my Kontakt, and as you described I set up a tuning script with my chosen tuning. It works but I have the issue of CPU usage blowing up to 100% as I use the instrument. Any tuning with more than 12 notes an octave causes this problem and Kontakt starts outputting choppy audio very quickly. Do you have any idea on how to fix/optimize this issue?
@@jardSo the problem occurs just with the tuning script, but not without it? I may have to recreate the issue when I get back to work, which is at the latest 6.8. Meanwhile, can you post some screenshots and other description to niklaseu@gmail.com so this can be solved faster.
@@niklaseuren I just sent an email about it and how to reproduce the problem, thank you for looking into it!
have you considered switching to cinela albert? much better wind protection for your 8040s
@@4ksightandsound Yes, actually I have considered, but haven't bought it yet. Maybe one day I'll make a comparison video 😎
@@niklaseuren yes i have a friend who has the 8040s and the cinela and no wind can disrupt that thing its incredible ill be getting it soon as well with the same set up but im going to add a center of the 8050 sennheiser so i can do a left center right set up

Very nice! Incredible how silent it is... Did you have to edit out a lot of airplane noise?
Thank you! No airplanes here, so didn't have to edit anything. Closest airplane activity is 100km away.
@@niklaseuren I'm jealous! I live in Belgium...airplanes all the time
@@raphaelmalfliet Yeah this is one of the rare locations where you don't have to think about airplane noise, or even traffic noise. You have to visit here someday! 😎

Sometimes you got to do crazy stuff to get those sounds! Thank you!
Thanks for your tutorial, i'm begining on field recording without many resources and i use linux... have you ever tried Audacity? Greetings from Argentina
I started with Audacity long time ago. I think both Audacity and Reaper are good starting points for audio editing. Audacity is not as versatile in the long run, but I'm sure it can do the stuff I explained in the video. There are also a lot of free plugins out there, which in many cases should work well with Audacity. Have fun with field recording!

Can this sled hold water? my plan is to use it for gardening. Put grow bags in it an let the water soak the bags as needed.
I wish I has 2 geofons. Great job on this take
i am suprised i figured that rycote would prevent anything from hitting it! does the rycote not prevent as much wind as say the cinella or what? love your stuff though my friend!
Nothing could handle this much wind alone. If there's a lot of wind, you will hear the wind hitting the windshield, no matter what brand you use. In some locations I use mosquito net or branches to weaken some of the wind before it touches the windshield. But in many places you want to place the mics + windshield behind some object so they don't get the wind directly. Some wind can be removed in post processing, but not all if there's too much.
@niklaseuren makes sense! I'm subscribing man. Keep it up!
Thank you, Niklas, It was relaxing to listen to.
Thank you!
nice
The silence in your area is so fantastic! This is something very very rare nowadays! You are a happy man, Niklas. Thank you very much for these nice recordings. I also love the static view from your camera. All the best.
Thank you!
Hello! Does it work with Ableton?
Yes, but remember that you need Native Instruments Kontakt 6.7.0 or later (full version) to use it with any DAW, including Ableton. I've started the process to make this work also with the free Kontakt Player, so if you are into that, stay tuned for an update!
@@niklaseuren thank you!
I've had a pair for a while and, after much testing, I'm not really convinced that they're any better than a decent contact mic.
