Women of Trentham International Womens Day 2021
I saw the part where Pat Phoenix was a judge for a contest in May 1966. This was the Saturday that England won the world cup.Bill, the main gate head man gave me permission to watch extra time in the Roman Bar as I was on the main gate at the time. Guess who was there - Pat Phoenix.
Trentham was a beautiful place I miss the old days!😢
What a loss
I grew up in Trentham and could name so many of the people I knew who lived in the houses and cottages featured.
Trentham was a lovely place to grow up in. I'm very glad the hunt had gone and was before my time, apparently it's on the verge of closing down wherever it's now based. Trentham Park was out playground as kids.
Trentham Hall revisited ruclips.net/video/zFY-zSmJmzQ/видео.html
When i was studying fir my degree at Stoke Poly, i had two years of dummer jobs at Trentham. In 76 i was the train driver, fabulous experience, we ran Dunrobin exclusively, Brora not at all and Golspie came out for three days when the clutch on Dunrobin failed. The engineer was st thst time Mr Thorley, hed bern at Trentham forever it seemed, hed lots of old stories, he slways prefaced with , everything in the gardens was lovely. For 77 the woodsman came back from the woods to drive the train sgain, so i was put in charge of the swimming pool cafe, god that was busy, solid from 1pm opening intil 7 pm closing. Fabulous place to spend the summer in the gardens, my mates had holiday jobs on kiplings cakes st Trent Vale.
So pretty years ago now modern estates all over
Nice to no about were i live
This is brilliant, well done and thank you.
John Simons is a Legend!
Great video John, I remember meeting you at the Academy of Sound in the keyboard section many times where we had many a lovely chat and a few jams, and thank you for a copy of your version you wrote, of The Christmas Song, amazing X
Absolutely loved the video John!.
So lovely when it was all fields and meadows.
A great car . Kirsty loved it . She felt very safe in it. Good memories . Hope that you and your Family are well and congratulations again .
I still remember the Volvo estate you had and trying to get all of your gear into it!
I'll pass this on to John
A fascinating social history.
How greed can destroy beauty ,my heart bleeds 🙏
I've always been bafflled by the reasoning behind the demolition of the hall. The Sutherlands are just the ancestors of the oligarchs who have bled this country dry leaving the husk that's left over now. I believe the final nail in the coffin is the brexit catastrophe and the ensuing fire sale. Like the Sutherlands our present day kleptocrats will simply move their capital to their next heist. The entire male line of my great grandfather's family were wiped out in the ridiculous squabble between members of one rotten family that still curses britain. I hate war and wish the memorials were seen as a warning to the people regarding the petty aristocracy. Thank goodness the evil spectacle of fox hunting is slowly being wiped out nowadays.
I could actually feel tears coming to my eyes watching this film. I have so many happy memories of growing up in Trentham, too many to list here but I never return as I think seeing it now would break my heart. Does anyone else remember the cable car that took you up to the top of the Seven Sisters in Trentham Park? I took a black and white photograph i still have of the engine driver posing next to one of the engines in the engine shed in the early 80's.
I grew up in Trentham during the mid 60's to the early 80's. To be honest it was a lovely place to grow up for we kids. Trentham Park was our playground and I worked Saturdays at Pimlott's garage, just visible in the picture of the demolition of the imposing three arch bridge which used to span New Inn Lane. I wish i had a picture of the old garage as I really enjoyed working for Harold and Stan, they treated me very well and helped me finance my hobby which was motocross, scrambling as it was then. I still occasionally see people like Graham C who lived in Werburg Drive who's dad oversaw the building of that estate in the 60's. I lived next door to to Campbells who built the new houses on New Inn lane next to the brook. Unfortunately Trenthan schools were dreadful filled with lazy teachers cruising to retirement who spoiled it for the good ones. Still, happy memories on the whole.
Really enjoyed that...thanks
Does nothing for me at all. All whose dogs, horses and so called men to hunt a 7 pound terrified animal does nothing for me except breed contempt for the scum that carried out this atrocity!!!
OMG. You just don't know what's right under your nose 😲
God rest and bless you all ❤️ x
looks like the old gravel pit that was in the first field after the Upper House.
Thank you for the comment and possible location. We have been trying to place it.
Is that Mr Johnson?! Fantastic man!
Brilliant... time to bake one!!
Great film 👍👍
Good film 👍👍
Really interesting and well produced. Having grown up on Whitmore Road I had often wondered about the tunnel. My Mum remembers Trentham Station, probably shortly before the trains stopped. Thank you :)
Great bit of local history very interesting 👍 where was the Hanchurch chapel of ease
Hello, we have Golspie at Amerton Railway, there's a video of it running in recent times on our website. Could I trouble you for some contact details for requesting permission for reproduction of the videos of Golspie (and other locomotives) running at Trentham Gardens? Footage like this will make a huge contribution to the information we have about this locomotive's history. Thanks Kris- Amerton Railway.
Hi Kris you might find it useful to contact Ray Johnson. ray.johnson@filmarchive.org.uk. He has lots of archive films. Have you seen our video Walk the Line on Trentham Heritage. This is about the Trentham Park branch line Chris
That video has just made me so homesick as a child I grew up in the old game keepers cottage so this was my play ground, I’ve now been stuck in Bahrain for a year & can’t wait to get back on leave next month
Thank you for your comment. The woodland area of the Gardens looks especially splendid at the moment. Hope you can get home soon.
Thank you so much for all your hard work with this video, the level of research material is absolutely wonderful!! You have done us so proud!! Also thank you for featuring my Mum in your work we will treasure it always Xxx🌿🌷🐝Xx
Great Video, I used to live near the embankment just off New Inn Lane in the mid to late 70's
Great video. No doubt Wilf knew my father Bernard Spilsbury, not many of us Spilsburys left.
Great research uncovered some outstanding memories. Thank You.
One the finest attractions Trentham ever had. The artist's interpretation catches not just a pool, but a fantastic family fun spot. Nothing ever replaced it.
this bank holiday unfortunately proves it was unviable, shame, great memories
The miniature railway was an extra special treat at Trentham. Remember the iconic Mr. Gouldstone the chief engineer and driver, who cared for those great trains as if they were his own. The main run was a return trip from the Playground to the Pool and just beyond to cosy little restaurant at the head of the lake by a waterfall.
A tragic loss. My favorite destination after school and work. Each day, and every evening whenever possible. I learned to swim and spent hundreds of happy hours there by myself or with the local gang. We'd bicycle down the back road and head home around the lake. Champion swimmer Norman Wainwright used to leisurely crawl a few laps some nights. He lived on Brook. Road. The cafeteria was modern complemented by modern changing rooms and other facilities. It was the best place for us youngsters and oldsters. Happy Days. Thanks for a fine tape.
Thank you Ken for your clear memories of the pool. Good to see Norman Wainwright mentioned too.
Great stuff. The Methodist Church is just around the coner on the Barlaston Old Road. I attended the church when I lived on Edward Avenue. Also played on the big golf course that almost swallowed the village. The golfers did not appreciate our presence, especially when we shortened and lengthened their putts. Pleasant memories.
Great shots carrying many memories. Cranberry Cottage is where I lived until emigrating to the States in 1950. My dad named the old post office "Cranberry." Like me, he and mum were heading to Cranberry Isles in Maine, USA to join my sister and family. I'm glad the name was retained. Thank You.
Thank you for the comment Ken. We are delighted to know how and why Cranberry got its name! Cranberry Isles look like a really lovely place to live!
Brilliant very interesting best ive seen about Trentham
Reginald Hagger came to lecture us when I was an Art student at Longton Art College, about 1966, I copied his style for a while, our Tutor, Mr Stringer, called me out as son of Hagger,, I stopped doing it then, he came across as a nice man!!!
This is a wonderful video of the open fields and pathways of the Eastern side of Hanford, capturing much wildlife along the journey, flowers, butterflies and birds. I have been doing this walk with my young grandkids since they were born in Hanford from 2008. Such a shame to be lost to the 'might of the developers'. If this is progress, count me out.
This is outstanding! The first time I've seen actual footage of the pool, and many images I've never seen before! I adore Art Deco modérne architecture from the 1930s, and Trentham Pool was a sublime exercise in the style. Alas, although I've lived in the area all my life, I only discovered the existence of the pool shortly after it had been demolished :-( I arrived on site to find mounds of earth where the pool once stood. The only remnant being the caretaker's house situated on the hillside overlooking the site. The house had been extended at some point, and was originally a twin of 'Woodgate Cottage' which still stands today, albeit in a very poor state of repair. I visited the derelict house many times over the years. I often ventured inside to gaze out from the Crittall windows, and imagine what once was... Not long before it was demolished, I rescued some of the original Art Deco Bakelite door handles & plates. I still have them to this day! So sad this architectural masterpiece, and much loved amenity is no longer with us.
Thanks for this positive comment Chris, much appreciated.
Are you a member of the NSR Study Group?
Not a member of the NSR study group. We are a generic heritage project based in Trentham. .
This is brilliant. I was the conductor on the train that's quoted in the film.
Thank you for a most interesting and well presented history of this branch line.
