NetPlace
Добавлен 22 окт 2021
The aim of NetPlace is to provide a friendly place for students and early-career researchers in Network Science from all over the world to interact. Not only we talk about our research developments, but also we discuss various challenges and difficulties we face in our journey to become a network scientist.
In this spirit, we organise online seminars every two weeks across the year. Differently from usual seminars, after a brief research talk, our speakers share with us some difficulties encountered in their academic path.
After every seminar, the recording of the session is uploaded on this RUclips channel.

Fantastic Simulations of Social Systems and Where to Find Them, Francesco Bertolotti
Research talk: Fantastic Simulations of Social Systems and Where to Find Them
Abstract: Modeling the interactions between entities capable of cognitive activities is a non-trivial task that requires the ability to interpret the behavior of a complex entity in a simple and possibly explainable way. Yet, it is highly relevant; all human systems are social systems, and the recent diffusion of GenAI makes the ability to accurately model social relationships even more critical. In this talk, it will be briefly discussed how to mathematically model and computationally implement different types of social systems, along with the potential to generate new information from them, as well as the chall...

RESEARCH TALK Title: Networks of chemical automata as a solution to programmability in unconventional computing Abstract: Nowadays, artificial intelligence uses a significant amount of energy, and its consumption is expected to increase in the coming years. In the face of the climate change crisis, this is problematic. It is, therefore, necessary to find sustainable alternatives that allow us t...
Revealing multilevel selective exposure, echo chambers, and polarization on social media, Yuan Zhang

RESEARCH TALK: Revealing multilevel political selective exposure, echo chambers, and polarization on social media Abstract: Selective exposure-the tendency for individuals to seek information that confirms their beliefs and avoid contradictory content-plays a significant role in shaping public opinion. In political contexts, it is often measured on a left-right ideological scale, which misses i...
Applying modularity to temporal networks modelled as link streams, Victor Brabant

RESEARCH TALK: Applying modularity to temporal networks modelled as link streams Abstract: Temporal networks are commonly used to model real-life phenomena. When these phenomena represent interactions and are captured at a fine-grained temporal resolution, they are modeled as link streams. Community detection is an essential network analysis task. Although many methods exist for static networks...
Industrial or Smallholder, that is the question, Ariadna Fosch

RESEARCH TALK: Industrial or Smallholder, that is the question Abstract: Oil palm (Elaeis guinensis) is a controversial crop. To assess its sustainability, we analysed the contribution of different types of plantations (smallholder, industrial and unproductive) towards meeting six Sustainable Development Goals. Using spatial econometric methods and data from 25,067 villages in Sumatra, Indonesi...
AI-GPT interaction to deradicalise radical novax behavior, Andrea Russo

RESEARCH TALK AI-GPT interaction to deradicalise radical novax behavior Abstract: This talk highlights the innovations in digital sociology and ethnography, where we pursued dual objectives: immersing in a Telegram radical community and deradicalizing an extremist group using AI technologies, specifically GPT-3.5. The methodology leverages classic chatbots, enhanced by advanced algorithms, to q...
Investigating shocking events through temporal multilayer graph structure, Cheick Tidiane Ba

RESEARCH TALK Investigating shocking events through temporal multilayer graph structure Abstract: In this talk, we will discuss the importance of multi-layer, temporal analysis of web-derived data. Indeed, in analysing important events, several open research questions are difficult to address as they require methodologies for the analysis that tackle the data's high temporal resolution, heterog...
A network scientist's perspective on polarization in social networks, Max Falkenberg

RESEARCH TALK "A network scientist's perspective on polarization in social networks": In this talk I will discuss the contribution network scientists can make to the study of political polarization. I will discuss some of my recent work including on the polarization of climate politics online, and on how online discussions across countries show a common pattern of affective polarization (i.e., ...
Network Interplay: Competing Effects on Herd Immunity, Abbas K. Rizi

Research talk Network Interplay: Competing Effects on Herd Immunity Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic has revealed gaps in our understanding of epidemic dynamics and the shortcomings of traditional models in real-world scenarios, particularly in comprehending herd immunity. This presentation will focus on how the structure of contact networks affects disease spread and intervention effectiveness....
The role of Egocentric Perspective in Temporal Networks, Antonio Longa
Просмотров 848 месяцев назад
RESEARCH TALK: The role of Egocentric Perspective in Temporal Networks Abstract: Temporal networks play a crucial role in modeling and understanding time-dependent systems, spanning from social interactions to biological processes. Over time, network science has developed numerous measures for analyzing and comparing temporal networks. Some of these methods involve breaking down the network int...
Higher-order ghosts: spectral analysis of hypergraphs, Gonzalo Contreras-Aso

Research talk: "Higher-order ghosts: spectral analysis of hypergraphs" Abstract: In the last year's we've witnessed a renaissance in network theory, with the introduction of hypergraphs to model systems beyond pairwise interactions. The community started the endeavour of translating already known graph-based measures to this new setting. A key bridge between graph theory and complex networks is...
Evaluating Urban Accessibility: A New Approach using Fitness and Complexity Metrics, Hygor Melo

Research talk: "Evaluating Urban Accessibility: A New Approach using Fitness and Complexity Metrics" Abstract: Accessibility, the ease of reaching valued destinations, is crucial for the quality of life and economic well-being of urban residents. It's a broad and multifaceted concept in urban and transport planning, with numerous methodologies proposed for its measurement. However, a critical a...
Spreading and Structural Balance on Signed Networks, Yu Tian

Research talk: Spreading and Structural Balance on Signed Networks Abstract: Two competing types of node interactions often play an important part in shaping system behaviour, e.g., activatory or inhibitory functions in biological systems. Hence, signed networks, where each connection can be either positive or negative, have become popular models over recent years. In this talk, we first introd...
The Evolution of Polarization in Online Debates - Alessandro Galeazzi

Research talk: The Evolution of Polarization in Online Debates Abstract: Growing concerns have been raised about the widening ideological divides that pervade our society across critical issues, spanning from vaccinations and climate change to politics. This increasing segregation into opposing groups poses numerous threats to society, potentially resulting in a variety of consequences, from in...
