Phosphor Dot Fossils: Battleship (Apple II, 1980)

How much computer power does it really take to do the classic board game justice? The latest addition to Phosphor Dot Fossils might just have the answer: something in the vicinity of 48K, according to the Apple II version of Battleship. No cute black cats here, this is a prime-time station ID with low-poly 3-D animation designed to spook the audience. Voyages Of Shelf-Discovery: Star Trek Kelvin Timeline Shuttles
i dowload every games apple what you play ! thenks for this vidéos!
This looks decent, but playability wise, it's no better than pinhead on the atari 8 bit. The newer 2600, 2024 version, looks far more playable compared to the computer versions.
Great video. I still have and use your classic video game CD from many years ago. Beautiful compilation of classic video gaming.
So jealous! I missed this. If they make the second one like this I have to get it!
Nice Video ! Sub & Like ! And Love Retro Xevious Game !
That Yamaha mt100, was a workhorse for me back in the day, the sound was superb, and I remember how you did wonders with that thing, and the keyboard, it was a open canvass for creativity for sure
IIRC, the game is very meta and tricky. For example, the way you can get out of the maze at the beginning without trying to brute force your way through it is to hit the ESC (escape) key. You want to escape? Just hit "escape." Reminds me of something that would appear in a Hideo Kojima game.
I have the vaguest memory of at least seeing Savage Bees in the wild once. I didn't remember it until I played Capcom Generation Vol. 3 on the Saturn in the late '90s, which is a collection of their early games: Vulgus, Exed Exes, Pirate Ship Higemaru and Son Son (all worth playing here, if you haven't already). This did make it out for the Famicom, but it wasn't published by Capcom. IIRC, it was published by Tokuma Soft.
Same here - my first exposure to it was via Capcom Generations on the PS1. Such a great arcade emulation machine - particularly if modded for imports - at a time before most PCs were equipped with the memory and audiovisual capabilities needed to run MAME well.
7:08 The occasional Freebie. A Robot will destroy itself randomly, leaving the last remaining Robot inactive, and you can get your bonus points as if you already shot it. The glitch bug really gives the game a challenge, illustrated on some of my videos.
I remember all the hype about Pac-Man coming to the Atari VCS. It was a full court press of TV commercials, magazines, in store promotions, etc, they really primed the pumps. Much more promos than any other game...by far. Expectations were very high and the finished product was disappointing, much more so than any other game. People bought the Atari VCS just so they COULD play Pac-Man at home so it really had a LONG WAY to fall.
The sheep would have been right up Les Nessman's alley if he'd done TV, although he'd probably prefer hogs.
Hogs... hmmm... hold that thought.
I may never have found out about Future Spy if it hadn't been included on one of the Genesis compilations that was released sometime in the early aughts. Good stuff.
Interesting. I"m a huge Crystal Castles fan, and while they nailed the look as well as they could, it definitely does seem to be lacking otherwise.
The $50plus to a 10 year old kid is a lot of money in 1982, what a let down it was it was definitely Kool aid as opposed to Coca Cola
<busts through a brick wall> OH YEAH!
I only got to play the arcade Pac-Man a handful of times back then, so I wanted to get this in the worst way. However, my parents had another idea: I ended up getting the Coleco tabletop arcade Pac-Man instead, which was a surprise. That was my Pac-Man for the longest time. I did finally get to play this at a school function, surprisingly, and despite what everyone else was saying about it, I still wanted it.
I also have - and still have! - that Coleco tabletop. Still working, though the decals are a bit worse for wear. Most of the Coleco mini-arcades were the bomb.
@@thelogbook7 I have a replacement - my original vanished sometime in the '90s - and the decals are probably in the same shape as yours.
The Coleco Pac Man tabletop is fantastic. Not sure what happened to mine. My parents probably gave it away after they bought me the Commodore 64 which took up most of my spare time after homework was completed. Atari 2600 Pac Man was a major disappointment but they made up for it with Ms. Pac Man.
Not going to lie, this game was the reason I wanted a 7800 in the first place. I remember seeing it in Toys 'R Us. Between the Egyptian setting and the Zaxxon-style of gameplay, I knew I'd have fun with it, and I was right. Regarding the hieroglyphics, you can combine any three to make different things happen. The manual goes into depth about what the combinations do. The combos you got here were mostly for points, but I did see you manage to get a "Kill Uwes" combo (Uwes being those stupid things that burrow through the ground). Some of the other combos you can get give you rapid fire, warp directly to the Howling Sphinx, and kill the Howling Sphinx. This is one of those two button 7800 games, with one button used for firing and the other to activate the hieroglyphic combos when you get them (aside from points, those are automatic). This was released for the 2600 and XE too, believe it or not.
Not bad for a forty year old game.
This was the first version of Xevious I ever played, and it's still one of the ones I go back to the most. I think you can mess with the difficulty switches to get the two button controls for firing and bombs working. I'm strongly considering getting a 7800+, although my modded 7800 serves me well.
This one is still my favorite (US) home port of this game. The varying difficulty levels make it a lot less tedious than the prettier NES version. I find it a lot more challenging, whereas the NES version is pretty tedious until quite a ways in once you learn the game. The best home port worldwide though is the PC-Engine, which contains both the original and an excellent sequel in the same hucard.
I have never even seen the PC Engine version. I'll have to look into this...
@@thelogbook7 well worth your time. It’s a hucard, it’s reasonably priced loose, and it has a near arcade perfect port of the arcade plus a sequel on the same card. The sequel is excellent too, basically takes everything that’s good about the first one and cranks it up.
A wickedly cool game system and a real shame about the timing of the video game crash. I love my Vectrex!
I miss my Vectrex. Emulation's okay, and huge kudos to the original Vectrex programmers for declaring peace with emulation. But I miss the real thing.
I found one of these at a flea market still in the package for $10 today only to find out how rare of a figure they are. Pretty hyped honestly.
Huh. Learn something new every day, I guess.
Holy crap, your presentation is top notch:))
Click here for the iconic theme music time stamp -> 01:23
Did any-body else mis-read the thumb-nail as a " F_y " curse word ???
Don't forget how much influence Xevious had on Japanese game devs at the time. So many early shooters were inspired by it. The last time something comparable happened was after the release of Space Invaders. Then it happened again in '85 with the release of Gradius.
Other w3 variants were a completely bald GariBALDi (..... sorry 🤷♂️) and a Lyta without gloves. IIRC, the elusive Shadow Sentinent also shipped with wave 3, but only one per case in full case assortment orders exclusively.
Nice game, but that Audio/ repetitive sound is awful
Just remember: 8-bit Ernest Borgnine.
Yes sir, Sir Pac-Man! Sir-dee-sir-sir!
Is it just me, or is getting on and off of ladders more difficult in this port? I noticed something similar in the original NES port of Pac-Man as well, it's harder to corner in it.
Marcus came with the White Star, the only official one we ever got since Galoob never released a Micro Machine. Which is a shame, as the bottom half is not painted at all! There was also a brown-outfit Vir variant in this wave, as well as an "Earth Force" Ivanova (which was HIGHLY inaccurate, as it was just the regular version's uniform painted in EA light blue with red trim) which was an exclusive mail in figure from one of the toy mags of the time. I believe White's Guide? Love these, thanks for putting 'em out!
Still love this line! For the most part, they did a great job on the 4 waves. I often dream about what might have been going forward. One quick note: wave 1 also had a G'kar variant, in a predominantly green outfit.
Great Video amigo!
Of a similar vintage and remember well the hype of the Shuttle program and did a few school reports on them. I remember well sitting in class when the Challenger disaster happened. It was my first experience with a public disaster.
Definitely cool toys that bring back great memories of that era!
Never heard of this at all. Interesting. I follow Opcode and Collectorvision very closely, and this still surprised me. Nice.
Pretty cool game! Thanks for posting 👍🙏
Nice Video ! Sub & Big Like ! And Love Nes Qix !
I missed Frenzy in arcades (and elsewhere). Playing this made me realize just what I'd missed.
The worms name is "Slimey" (Slimey The Worm)
Really good version of Berzerk...love my Vectrex!
Who Mourns for a-DON-iss :)
So you're into 'jumping on the bad guys'? So that's your secret kink? sorry but you forced me to not resist lol ;)
Didn't know this existed. Really neat!
I like this game 😊
Oh, it is more than any version. There is a second part after you defeat EXODUS! And it is way harder than the first original part.
I played this back in '84 at an IHOP. Died in like 2 minutes. Asked my dad for another quarter. Lasted maybe a minute. LOL... keep up the great work Earl.
I loved this game. By the way the little tune is not from “Superman”, it’s close but not exactly it. It’s “Thus Spoke Zarathustra” from Richard Strauss which was used in Kubrick's “2001”. And there is your space-reference. 😉
Maybe it's a limitation of the 2600's sound capabilities, but to my ear it resolves in a major key, closer to "Can You Read My Mind", rather than the minor key of "Also Sprach Zarathustra". Now that you bring it up, I can kind of hear it though.
“Like a frog” -Fred the spotted Frog- (circa 1989 or 90)
