(2:43) Composers look for structure”. But, do you compose for conductors?
Great take on concert band composing!!
Hello, Carlos. I loved the video and I will try to read this book. I loved your work and I'm following it now. I'm a guitar teacher in Brazil and here the material is rare and scarce in that sense. Despite studying music and taking classes in arrangement, composition and harmonic analysis, I still miss a good book that talks about how to actually start composing, is there anything in my mind that could help? thanks
are you crying? damn you must be grateful
This is a great video, and it’s exactly what I needed. I’m a music student as well
Jack wilds is another wonderful composer
Carlos, have you had any problems with importing scores to Dorico Pro5? I have tried importing several of my Notion6 scores and Dorico completely mangles them beyond repair. See my video, "How Dorico Pro5 absolutely destroyed my Notion6 music score and audio".
I’ve been thinking long and hard about whether or not I want to buy one and you’ve just about sold me on it. My one question is about notation. Are there any notation apps for the iPad that allow me to write a chart out with an Apple pencil that converts it to a digital chart?
Nicely done and I agree with what you shared!
This was super helpful! I've been using Opal, but seeing how One Sec asks for your reason for scrolling...I think I might try to switch! I see so much value in that. Thanks for sharing!
Glad it was helpful!
❤❤ i love your work ❤❤

So are you registering your pieces to the CO b4 or after publication?
Very well done. Cemented my decision to blow > $800 on a new iPad Air 13" after 49 years of 3-ring binders. I'm an amateur guitar player.
Thank you, Carlos! I have been researching how to create videos of my scores for youtube and yours is my favorite. You clearly communicate and make it so approachable. I also like the creative tips you share, like your page turn effect and thumbnail. Thanks for your generosity in sharing. Congratulations on your success with your scores :-)
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for sharing some wind band composer, I didn’t know Julie Giroux and it’s really amazing
Isolate your mic from the desk. Every time you set your hands down, your audio is full of thumping and bumping. Very distracting from an otherwise enjoyable presentation.
Apple only, for people wondering.
Gonna be excited for the new productivity era! I'm just like you, a composer and productivity-enthusiast, so I can't wait to see what you come up with!
Thankyou so much for sharing these resources ❤❤ Subscribed right away❤
I have major anxiety but I needed to see this. I've been out of high school for going on four years now. And I'm just now wanting to pursue music education. I don't know where to start as far as preparation. My audition wouldn't be until spring so I have time.
It’s never too late to start. I would focus on creating a rep list that you can perform successfully and that you enjoy based on your schools’ requirements. You got this!
👌🙏 Thank You for sharing these!
hi carlos! this was a super helpful video for me. i have score videos on my channel but i've been trying to find a more consistent & profressional way of creating them and this gave me several ideas - thank you!
Glad it was helpful!

Still learning new things from you
I think you should do a video where you polish it and make it better.
Excellent content plus you look great!
Nice!
Can't thank you enough for this video, I'm just starting with composition and I would like to study it on the college, and these are amazing resources! Thank you!!
I hope it's helpful! Good luck!
This video was very helpful, thanks for sharing
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for your ideas!
You are so welcome!
My personal favorite resource would have to be pirated books, and also scores: Counterpoint in Composition, the Taneyev counterpoint book, both Adler and Korsakov's orchestration books, the Slonimsky Thesaurus, Behind Bars, Persichetti's 20th C. Harmony etc. etc. are all essentials. Piracy is also a rather enjoyable hobby.
Using Dorico notation software has been an ongoing struggle, primarily due to the constant issues with sound functionality. I use Cresendo, much more friendly to use.
GREAT ADVICE. tHANKS!!!!11!!
I think it's more useful to actually just prompt yourself rather than the AI chat. By studying music you can start to formalize what kinds of melodies, chords, and what kinds of polyphonic movements are possible. You can than use this knowledge to prompt yourself, for example you can use a cuartal chord diatonic to X scale as scaffolding for your melody. Then harmonize it or add imitation. You can use all kinds of structures as starting points, chords by thirds, seconds, fifths, sixths, sevenths and have them "snapped" to all kinds of scales, Major, minor, harmonic, melodic, modal scales, modes of melodic and harmonic minor, diminished scales, Octatonic scales, whole tone, pentatonic, chromatic. Or even just start with a tone row and remove notes to shape the melody. Throw a dice and use it to pick texture or orchestral devices. There are only a few limited forms, try all of those. Use melodic development all over the place If needed. If you don't like the result add interpolated harmony and melody, move stuff around if you dont like it. Or just remove the melody and improvise a new melody over it! Start with a song you like and add a new melody, Frankenstein two songs together and improv over that. Then remove the original harmony and add your own. IMO there's no excuse for staring at a blank page.... and all these methods require no AI and also take 30 or less minutes ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Terrible! This experience shows that you have to forget ChatGPT and compose music with your heart and brain. The biggest problem with modern classical music is the absence of melody. There is only a succession of notes that means nothing. ChatGPT can compose easily that kind of music but this is dead music from the start that will be easily forgotten. Why, for instance, is the music of Chopin so universally loved? It is because it is always melodious. Nothing is more difficult than finding a melody that touches the heart, that moves. This is what gives a real meaning to a composition and makes it seductive and unforgettable.
What kind of case do you have for your iPad?
I'm still searching for a good one! I'm using the Apple Magic Keyboard right now, but it's not suited for putting on a music stand lol.
@@CarlosLalondeif you haven’t found one yet I recommend the Logitech combo touch!
@@rosiejjacksonn what’s it like??
@@CarlosLalonde well I can’t lie I don’t personally have it but it’s a keyboard case and there’s some good RUclips videos on it, the keyboard is detachable and it protects the iPad fully
