Hello! I'm Ben, and this channel is where I make videos about topics that I find interesting, and present them in a shorter form sort of video essay/documentary format. Mostly what I'm interested in is historical topics, or anything kind of bizarre and unique. Thank you for stopping by!
The Story of the SS Admiral Sampson
A short presentation covering the story of the Steamship Admiral Sampson, from it's construction to it's sinking, and it's modern day existence beneath Puget Sound. More information is available below.
A couple minor corrections: 11.41 I pronounced it BRANBURY but it's BANBURY. 13.48 I meant to type 'wireless operator', not 'wireless operation'.
0:00 Prologue
1:02 Chapter 1: Into Service
4:35 Chapter 2: August 26th, 1914
10:59 Chapter 3: Casualties
14:44 Chapter 4: Sampson's Grave
16:47 Epilogue

One of the more interesting and comical stories I was told after joining the Corps of Engineers in 73. There are a number of past towns and communities that have been submerged beneath impounded lakes throughout the US, many were relocated to new locations, some, like Gad were lost.
Nimitz huh? My grandma lived there and my dad lives there now. It's a small world isn't it? I just moved to the summersville area about a month or so ago and I'm telling you know that you will Absolutely love summersville!
Are these actual pictures of Gad ? I noticed some of the background video in the beginning is actually Thurmond WV . Please turn down the banjo music . Yes I realize we are Appalachian but believe me there is no banjo or fiddle music playing everywhere in reality. Otherwise this video is very informative. Thank you.
I got open water diver certification at gaddam West Virginia Charles Reese McElwain from lazy run West Virginia. I also found a sant Brendon the navigater rock writing under the lake
I'm actually here right now doing the same. Any idea where abouts that rock is?
Fantastic!
Gaddammit
I’m not surprised that both boilers exploded
You should have contacted sarges dive shop at the marina, I'm sure they know all the info
Some families must have grown close, especially Adkins and Robert's lol which have spawned one of my closest friends haha Fred Roberts the 3rd
Awesome video! There is also a town that a lot of the Mad Max movies were filmed in the town of Broken Hill in Australia. I agree that including this little know ghost town in fallout 2 is quite an interesting choice. There are many other larger mining towns in that area. I wonder if there was influence from the Max Max filming location in the choose to include this town fallout 2? I wonder if any local libraries around the ghost town might have photos of Broken Hills at its peak. Thanks for sharing your research!
The music in the background as people being interviewed is loud so hearing what they are saying is difficult.
nice video. I camp at the campground right there frequently. The land is much better without any of the genocidal colonizer settlements!
I bought an 88 acre farm w/ 2story house in 1970 for $2,500 only 2 miles from Gad, so $12.000 wasn't a bad price in the 1960's
quality content bro. keep it up, super entertained
🤔 Why was the footage of the cash left out of your otherwise awesome report?
There isn't any actual footage of the crash, only photos, it was too early. The other footage in this video is misc railroad stuff from the early 1900's, which was as early as I could find. Had to work with what was available. Oh, and thank you for the compliment!
Nearby Centraia, WV was moved when the Elk River near Sutton, WV was flooded as it was named Sutton Lake.
Breaks my heart to see perfectly good steamers destroyed for no good reason other than a sideshow stunt just because they were surplus. Much the same reason a locomotive was destroyed filming the 1926 Buster Keaton film "The General", at the time they were plentiful and they didn't need it anymore anyway. That one fortunately didn't explode....
Over at Sutton Dam, Earnie Carpenter wrote a song about his family’s farm being flooded for the dam. Elk River Blues…hauntingly beautiful fiddle tune.
My ancestry is Carpenter's of the Elk River from Centralia near Webster Springs. The McCourts and Carpenters.
When the Corps of Engineers made all of their lakes during the Flood Act there is a clause to leave no standing structures such as homes and bridges intact. All homes are bulldozed or moved out of the area that will be flooded. Bridges are blown up and left to fall into old river beds they once stood over. Also, standing timber that may possibly affect recreation boaters are clear cut and sold for Timber sales. I worked for the USACE in PA and one structure they left intact but gutted under the lake was an old dam and powerplant. There are zero houses and zero intact structures like some may say.
Lake. Berryessa outside Winters Ca supposedly has a town under that as well.
Interesting. Thanks for that info, I'll give it a look!
pronounced kuh-naw :)
Thanks!
Yo! What's Good?! It's super rad to see all this awesome very little known 🗽American history. I didn't know any of this stuff before watching a few of these. It takes a donk-and-a-half load of research to make this type of content. Again, It's hella dope and I hope to see more little known U.S.A history videos in the future.🥰 Word up homes slice.😁
Appreciate you taking the time to check some of the content out. I'll be back, I've been on a break from this project, but I've got plenty of topics I'd still like to cover. Thanks for the words!
@@benjaminthorvaldsen N.P.😁
Greetings! I just came across your channel and I really enjoy your videos! I hope you decide to make more, especially since it looks like you haven’t uploaded in almost a year. Your information is concise and informative.
Welcome to the channel! Yeah I had to take some time away from this project, but I do plan on returning. Hopefully, before the end of the year, I have plenty of topics I'd still like to cover. I have one that I've recently begun putting together about a ghost town called Drawbridge.
@@benjaminthorvaldsen groovy! I understand having to take time away. All the best!
Look up Smith lake Bremen Alabama it has houses still standing under water but mostly it's the petrified Forrest still standing. It's makes finding and recovering drowning hard
Cool video! Big fan of abandoned history and Fallout so I guess that’s why RUclips recommended it. Thanks for making it.
I'm surprised it got recommended, but I'm glad you clicked on it. I have very similar interests. Thanks for checking it out!
Your music is louder than audio .Very dif to listen to narrator
nevermind i had two screens running
My family as well (MORRIS)
There was a few cinder blocks left that got exposed at winter pool back in the 80's. Those probably became ad hoac boat anchors years ago.
dude you should have way way wayyyyy more many subs this is fantastic quality. don’t give up
I appreciate it, Amal. I'll be back! Not going anywhere.
Found this channel because of the California City Video, all of these are really good and deserve many many more views than they currently get. I know its been 8 months but hopefully there's more to see in future, either on this channel or elsewhere!
Thank you! And yes, I do plan on returning. It's been a busy 6-8 months and I hadn't really had enough time to spend on this project, but I'm hoping to get back to it soon. I've got plenty more video topics I'd like to cover.
@@benjaminthorvaldsen Fantastic Stuff! I hope all the requests for new videos isn't rushing you and that the algorithm rewards the work! (Also id love to see some more content looking at real world places that feature In video games) :)
THANK YOU for sharing this history…! 👍🏼👍🏼🙂👠👣
I like your channel’s presentations. They’re really well done. And I’m not just saying that as a fellow Washingtonian. I had no idea about this either!
Hey, thanks! I appreciate it. Yeah what a story, sad... but interesting.
yo, KEEP GRINDING BOSS. YOU HAVE EXCELLENT CONTENT. i promise you that if you keep uploading, you will succeed. great video
Just discovered this channel and love it and so sad to discover you don't upload anymore. Still wish you were making vids.
I've been on a break from this channel for a while, been very busy the last several months, but I am planning on returning to it soon. I have most of what I need for a few new videos, hoping to have some new stuff out within the next couple months!
@@benjaminthorvaldsen no yeah I completely understand the need to take a break so no worries😂 this content is youtube top tier. You really deserve more subs.
Yeah U fs gonna grow quick I’m starting to get u recommend and yo videos are so well put together keep it up bro
Fellow WA state resident here. So glad I found your channel! Ever heard of Captain John Backland by any chance?
Hey there fellow Washingtonian. No, I hadn't heard of Capt. Backland before. Did a preliminary search on him... seems like a hell of an interesting guy. I might have to dive deeper in a video sometime.
Beautiful scenery and suchba amazing history. Definitely a look see is required for me. Thanks for sharing 👍
The irony of if the dam was never placed there the towns removal was inevitable by the flood. The people dodged that bullet too.
I found this after watching the California City video on my recommended list and found it highly fascinating. I love this history of places and this one is truly unique. I realize that records are scarce considering the location, but it was still fun to watch the correlation between the game and the real place. It was nice to know someone dug a little deeper to provide a rich backstory, even if it was a small part. It is so much fun researching and finding gems like this. Keep making these types of videos, I can’t wait to see more. The part I liked the most is when you included the clip from the game, I could almost imagine myself there, watching the town diminish, kind of in a time lapse. Overall, I’d give this video 10/10. For historical and educational purposes, I’m going to embed this video on my website and talk about how history can influence storytelling. I subscribed and am now a big fan of your work. 💯
Thank you very much! I love looking into stuff like this as well, and I plan to continue making more in the future. I've been on a break for a while with this channel but I'm planning on returning to it soon.
God bless Gad.
You deserve a lot more views and subscribers
I appreciate the sentiment, thanks for checking out the videos!
How does this only have 400 views? What an interesting video - I had never heard of this before. Glad I found your channel 👍
Thank you! And welcome!
They should do this with a few of those Airbus A380s parked out in the desert.
