Winters can get pretty tough here in Northern Ohio but that doesn't mean I can't grow tropical fruits and other plants. Or does it? Come along with me as I try!

Using Manual Sugarcane Juicer To Make Sorghum Syrup
Просмотров 2194 месяца назад
Affiliate link to juicer: amzn.to/3B12xFu Mesh Bags: amzn.to/3To4sdy I bought this juicer press to squeeze my sorghum stems this year and it worked out really well so I thought I'd share the process with everyone. I grew a small patch of Dale sorghum again for making my own homemade syrup. Great for off grid homesteader sugar production.
Making Sorghum Syrup Using Only a Cheap Juicer
Просмотров 7299 месяцев назад
This was my first time making sorghum syrup and it turned out great. It's usually made using a large roller press but I decided to make do with a slow/cold press/auger style juicer I have. It's a lot of work but totally doable. Sorghum syrup tastes about like molasses and can be used in place of maple, honey or agave in any recipe. Very drought tolerant crop, easy to grow and sustainable. Great...
Growing, Harvesting and Eating Maypop (Hardy Passion Fruit)
Просмотров 169 тыс.8 лет назад
Growing, Harvesting and Eating Maypop. Also known as hardy passion fruit or passiflora incarnata, purple passionflower and wild passion vine. I finally harvested a few in my northern organic garden and decided to film it. Let me know what you think. Also tell me in the comments if you grow or ever tasted them. Some links are paid affiliate links. Thanks for supporting my dream! Passiflora seeds...
When you say plants from different seeds, does it matter if the seeds themselves may have come from the same fruit?
I can't wait to process mines, it's not quite ready yet. I was going to juice mine but I think I will invest in one of those sugarcane juicers. do you think that's what made the difference in the flavor? also how did you know when to harvest?
Yeah I think this press made a really big difference. An auger style juicer like I used last year squeezed it too hard leaving too much wax, sediment and fiber. I'll be growing an even bigger patch next year as this made it much faster and less work to press too. If you are saving seed, wait for the seed to dry out. If you only care about getting the best syrup from the stems, you can cut them with the seeds are still soft or milky when you squeeze the grain. Thanks for watching!
I love the slow pace of this video and the many pauses. I felt like I could process the info better.
Thanks for the creative tip. We tried this out. It works, but definitely not ideal considering the amount of sorghum we're growing. The ~$250 cane juicer on Amazon may be our next stop, if we keep expanding.
I had the exact same thought. I just made syrup this year using one of those cane presses and I just put up a video of how it worked out if you're curious. I really liked it and I plan on growing a much larger patch of sorghum next year. Thanks for looking.
Thank you for information, the fruits..❤❤❤❤
A NASTY and WICKED VINE! it will devour and take over and destroy vegetable and flower gardens. Once established it almost impossible to eliminate. Unless you want to see this this plant EVERYWHERE for the rest of your life, the DO NOT GROW in the ground!!! Happy gardening.
what's the name of that machine to juice it?
I've never tried growing sorghum, will have to give it a go!
Yeah you should try it, it's an amazing crop. Very fast growing and doesn't need watered in most contexts. I'm growing a few varieties of sorghum this year. Dale again for syrup, and I bought a proper press. I'm also growing a few shorter grain varieties I plan on trying to cook and see how it tastes.
@@NorthTropics I'm still working on developing a vegetable growing area, so it might be a little while before I can try, but thanks for the tips! Keep in touch.
❤❤❤ Good video. I am your new friend. I'm happy if we can be friends. Have a nice day. ❤❤❤
Song name? Please?
Very good. Do you have a green house? I was going to get a cheap popup greenhouse and use my own version of a Chinese green house blanket with some grow lights in winter. I was thinking the butterfly garden in greenhouse could pollinate all year round. Maypop have friterlary (so) butterfly
I didn't have a greenhouse at the time of making this video, I do now. The maypop is rock solid just in the ground without any protection for me still. Hoping with the greenhouse to have better look with more tropical passion fruits though.
Hey, had fun with this one! Thanks for all the support on my last video. New content coming soon about growing tropical plants in a cold climate, sorghum growing, subsistence gardening and more. I know the music is kinda cringe but I thought it was funny xD
I don't recommend using paper towels for passion fruit seeds. They can sometimes be a bit tricky to sprout. I recommend putting the seeds right into potting soil and putting the pot outside in the full summer sun. Something about the sunlight and change of temperature from day to night really helps a lot of tropical seeds sprout. Good luck!
@@NorthTropics спасибо!
Have two genetically different types of this in my cold greenhouse for several years, northern Germany with mild winters til - 16 degree, they grow and flower but NEVER got fruits, even there are bees and I tried to hand pollinate. So sad, what is the reason?
.. this is your only video in 7 years? 😮 why did you stop, it's quite good actually. what became of your hybrid plant plans?
If you crossbreed maypop with exults, will the resulting offspring be a hybrid, i.e. neither true maypop nor edulis?
Man i was hoping for updates
I have the may pops growing wild all over my homestead. I used to just cut the vines but this year I am cultivating many of the plants. Looking forward to the harvest.
Can you harvest the seeds of the wild plant before they fall? I've seen them about and wanted to get some seeds, but are the seeds viable before the fruit falls to the ground? Thanks.
What cause flower abort
Not true about the seeds. Germination is actually poor, even WORSE chances when you store them first.
What zone do you grow in? I live in zone 4, would I be able to grow this from seed and get it to fruit in the same season?
More videos 😊
They're easier than that if you live in the south. Just scatter the seeds along the fence line.
Where can I get some of them seeds
I was given a maypop about 6 years ago. I get a few flowers every year but not a single fruit. I live in NJ and have honeybees on my property. What am I doing wrong? It’s not very big. I mulch it and it does completely die back every year. Second question - I just happened across a house a few blocks away that is going up for sale that has massive maypop vines with tons of plump green fruit - can I pick it green off the vine and let it ripen off vine? I won’t have access to the vine later in season when they ripen.
Did you get a cross between the incarnata and edulis?
mine grew wild in my back yard , it is many many times the size of yours and took no time flat to take over a massive area of my yard . as in i thought i killed it all last year , then this year my entire shed is covered in it . zero care to this thing i need to look into agent orange.
Hello from Alberta ! what part of the country are you growing these Maypop ? Thanks
I've had one of these growing in a pot for over a decade... think the most it's ever done is get 2 flowers on it one year. it doesn't seem to sucker at all either.
they do well here, in Arizona, once established. But, there's a caterpillar that will eat them to the nub. When found, we use a sharp twig to get rid of them because they carry a mild toxin.
Lots of good information but you don't say what minimum soil temperature should be and no timing on germination or harvest timing.
Sorry if asked, but do the leaves grow back if harvested for tea?
Terrific video!!! Very informative. Thank You so much.
Most people I know and myself don't like this greenish yellow passion....
This is the first year that I have had maypop produce fruit. I planted it from seed last year. When the fruits drop from my vines there is no slimy pulp. There is just a dry web of seeds. Is this typical of first year fruit?
Where do you get your plants/seeds at first?
We have these growing all over our farm! Missouri here.
How long does it take to bare fruits growing from seeds?
From 1 to 2 years.
Thank goodness I found this. I couldn't find a video that would give me straight information about the maypop.
Where are you located???
You said to "subscribe...more videos..." This is your only video, no updates
My mom uses the may-pop fruits to make passion fruit jam. You don't even need to add pectin to make it.
Do you have your moms recipe or video ?
How many vines do you let grow from the ground on your maypop? Is it like a grape where you only have 1 main cain until it reaches the trellis and then let the laterals grow?
Have you cross pollinated yet? Id buy the seeds
Informative and enjoyable explanation for my first attempt to grow, thanks
How did the hybrid turn out? Is it hardier, tastier, nicer flowers?
If only he would answer that would be great. Hopefully he sees your question or his sponsors remind him that follow up and follow thru is part of the advertising agreement. Any luck crossing the varieties?
Why is there only one video this is Awesome video please make more
do they produce any usable wood?
My fruit bear that flower and it was gone the next day. I live in florida so we have lizards, and all types of critters what do you suggest
