    Pro tip, these big water fish can swim a lot faster than you think they can, if you’re getting your lure to where the fish are and you’re still not getting bites, go faster. that way, the fish has less time to take a good look at the lure and has to grab it before it gets away.

      I haven't fished from shore at Boysen since I was a kid, so I'm not sure. Fishing about sun up, just before sun-down, or at night would increase your chances a lot. Likely worms or minnows for bait. Some crank-baits may work also.

      @@JG_23_ I think the better places mid summer are likely 1) The eastern shore and coves between the Bad Water Creek inlet and Tough Creek peninsula. 2) the western shore and coves between Sand Mesa and Cottonwood camping areas. Early-early morning and later evening (just before dark), the fish will be closer to shore in 15-ish feet of water.

  • @danpagel2512
    @danpagel2512 6 месяцев назад

    This is a question and not a dig on keeping fish👍. Since you can't possibly eat them all fresh, how do you preserve them? Are you filleting and freezing? I typically only keep one or two trout because I only need one ir two ( depending on size) for a meal. Just wondering what you do and if freezing them, how mushy does the flesh get?

    • @jimmyinthewild4148
      @jimmyinthewild4148 6 месяцев назад

      I do throw back about 95% of all fish that I catch. I don't think I'd want to clean that many fish. I'm actually very selective of what I keep. I fillet all fish that are going to be frozen, but we do eat a lot of fish. On average we eat fish at least 3 times a week, and most are store bought. For the fish I catch, I fillet the trout and leave the skin on, but remove all bones and fins. I also fillet all walleye and make sure there are no bones or skin. if the fish aren't going to be eaten immediately, they are vacuum sealed and frozen. I have a really great vacuum sealer that I use a lot. I usually eat all fish within a few weeks of being caught. We almost never have walleye in the freezer more than a week. There have been a few packages of trout that have been in the freezer for a month, but the vacuum sealer has never let me down. No freezer burn or meat degradation. Only pack one meal's worth (2 to 3 people) of fish in each vacuum sealed bag. Also, only freeze the fish once. If you thaw and freeze fish more than once, then you'll have mushy fish problems. Also, you need to be very selective on the trout you keep. Nearly all female trout, a few months before spawning time and a few months after spawning time, will have mushy streaky overly-fishy meat no matter what you do. I toss those back even if they are monsters. Male trout can also have streaky light colored meat before an after spawning time, but their meat is usually still firm and edible if grilled with blackening spices or smoked. If you get a vacuum sealer, get your sealing bag material from Sam's Club because it's super cheap compared to sporting goods stores.

      @@jimmyinthewild4148 Thanks!!! I fillet pretty much everything but small (12" or less) trout that I'm planning on eating. I just wondered what you were doing since that video bounty should have resulted in a bunch of fantastic fillets, and unless you're feeding an army, I wondered how you saved them for later. Looks like we're on the same page, as I vacuum seal anything I want to save for later. I live less than an hour from Boysen, but tend to fish a lot of lakes other than it, even though I have a walleye boat. 😆😂🤣😅 Thanks for the video and the info!!!

    • @jimmyinthewild4148
      @jimmyinthewild4148 Год назад

      For many lakes like this one, there are not length limits like that. So I could keep all 6 trout in my limit and they could all be over 20 inches. However, there are length limits like only 1 over 16 inches or 1 over 20 inches for many creeks and rivers. The regs are pretty clear. When I was younger, there were length limits where you could only have 1 over 20 inches from this lake, but the regs changed a while back.

      In a typical year, mid April to early May. However, this year has not been typical. We've had a very cold winter with lots of snow. The lake was still partially iced over when they were filling it up. So mid April wasn't a possibility. Also the lake is full right now. We may also have enough water to spill over at Pathfinder this year, which will cause the water in the canyon to get high early and cover that section of river that I was fishing. Not sure if or when that will happen.
