Views of the French Alps from Mont Saxonnex

A series of views across the French Alps from the tiny ski station of Mont Saxonnex which is near to Cluse, in the Haute-Savoie department of France. We were walking in the area, and took shots of the surrounding mountain from a DJI Mini2 drone. Views include the Grand and Petit Bargy peaks from Lac Bénit, views down to Morsulaz and around to Cluse, Marnaz, Scionzier and to the rivers of l’Avre...

Just out of interest, you don't happen to know if this building Copped Hall is the abandoned mansion that featured in James Herbert's book 'Lair'? (The one where giant rats take over parts of Epping Forest). In many ways it fits the bill - located in or near Epping Forest, was damaged by fire in the past, had extensive gardens and a stables. In the book it suggests that the stables and grounds were being used to house pigs in and around 1979. Just a thought. And well done to everyone involved in restoring the place.

London, and indeed most British cities, are unusual in that there are very few grade separated roads/motorways that feed directly into or close to the city centres from outside, which is definitely no bad thing. The real tragedy of the era was that the once world class railway system was eliminated long before the expected replacement road network was completed, or even started in a lot of cases. This leaves us in the unenviable position of the 'worst of both worlds' whereby roads and public transport capacity are both grossly undercapacity for current needs. Hopefully we will get a lot of the railways back in the next few decades.

Fun fact. The roads skirting Southend were built with dual lamp standards despite only being single carriageway. A bits of the road were upgraded to dual carriageway later but the bulk remains single carriageway to this day. One problem with Mapin sands was that the mud holds lots of unexpoded ordnance from a century of testing. They cleared a test section, only to find that the mud had started filling up with new undiscovered munitions, because of its fluid nature.

    • @HollowayTyre
