    My recipe for sculpture - Add 1 part diatomaceous earth - 1 part sand - 1 part Portland cement 1/2 cup white cement bonding liquid or you can use white Elmer’s school glue

    • @MontanaBlissArtworks
      @MontanaBlissArtworks 3 месяца назад

      Diatomaceous earth yes i can see how that would work. I will have to try it. I always say admix is like watered down glue and you have proven that. I expect diatomaceous earth is more expensive than sand so what benefit is this element?

    I'm happy to find a concrete sculpture artist. You do nice work. I wanted to propose something a pottery college instructor once pointed out to me. My view is that it's always better to work in wet concrete (or clay), rather than dry, hardened concrete with a dremel, especially since concrete can be stamped. You could just carve a name stamp, & use a set of number stamps for dates. If the back is hidden, I would just make a name piece to lay on the table upside down, under the wet work, at the start, & build on top of it wet from there.

  • @cchemmes-seeseeart3948

    I'm wondering how this art has held up? As it looks like you have pushed the ends of the aluminum into the concrete. I had considered using aluminum flashing to help create concrete armatures, until I learned that aluminum in concrete is against standard practice. For example, just a Google search about it, gives a long list of professional organizations saying aluminum is not to be used in concrete, because it corrodes in the alkali environment. Did you coat the ends with something that we don't see in the video? Also, I also found this remarkable, because I would expect cutting aluminum into strips would produce very sharp metal edges that could be dangerous? You didn't say anything about that, & I see you handling it freely, lifting it up like paper streamers. So that also left me a bit confused, since you didn't mention anything special you did to cut the aluminum to avoid this? Thanks.

      I also use Pal Tiya and awesome concrete product with fibers. I coated natural leaves with pal tiya and shaped it over a wad of tinfoil to give the leaf a curvy shape than placed in a plastic ziplock bag for 30 days. The tin foil was only being used to hold the leaf up while curing. It did start to deteriorate the tin foil. Put Pal Tiya is meant to be used over tin foul covered armature. It doesn’t really matter if it deteriorates it is only there for the application process. The concrete has not affected the aluminum pop can also they are not all sharp. My sculptures with the aluminum pop cans do hang outside year round un Montana weather. The sun will fade the print colors off the aluminum in a year or so. That is the only thing that has happened.

    Nice video. I enjoyed glimpses into seeing you work. Thanks. My notes: TOOLS: curved leather knife, xacto knife = #1- e.g. digging out deep eye sockets; mop fine art brushes; hands/fingers; wood stick, dental tools. MIX: portland cement, sand, colorant, liquid mixture. Mixes to clay like consistency, places on work surface, & carves it. (Video shows pouring milky water on- probably acrylic or latex, w/ or w/out water). SUBJECT: people/faces- from interesting faces encountered in life- & initially inspired by architectural faces on buildings in Chicago- stone carvings; uses realistic looking glass eyes. USES: Garden pieces (on rock walls, hang on trees, on ground, hidden in plants, as surprises)/ & pieces not for garden, with added jewelry, real fibers (e.g. animal hair- lamb's wool; alpaca hide; ). UNIQUE compositions/ NOT molds: realism eyes couldn't work w/ mold; starts w/ a concept- might be a facial expression, the eyes, clothing, or 1:43??? INSPIRATION: (besides above): pictures, online, magazines, as watch TV... finds a face that "speaks' to her. MODIFICATION of people: it starts w/ people, but may add animal features, or 'over-express,' or WORK METHOD- ADDITIONAL: draws lines in the concrete, to assist features placement. CURING: 1st spray with more water, then shows placement on a board, inside plastic bag, w/ jar to elevate the plastic off the face. Milky white liquid = mortar admix.

  • @cchemmes-seeseeart3948
    @cchemmes-seeseeart3948 4 месяца назад

    Ideas covered: build around styrofoam block, covered w/ cellophane sheet. Mark block location on work surface, so you can know its position as hand build & manage sculpture thickness; table markings can get lost as work & get slurry/ cement on work surface (so maybe cover with plastic film you can move? wipe off?; Deer antlers: do not want to insert when concrete is already curing- drying/ can lead to cracks/ insert wet- she re-wet the concrete mortar for adding them

    • @MontanaBlissArtworks
      @MontanaBlissArtworks 4 месяца назад

      I soak my antlers in water so they are dry and draw moisture out of concrete. I don’t insert them i actually lay them where i want them and apply the concrete mix around them.

    Thanks for the video. I find it valuable to hear from someone with experience with concrete sculpture. I am confused about one point. I went to Uline to look up these gloves, using the number you gave. In the video, you say they are not textured, which you need for the sake of working with your sculpture. The Uline website indicates that they have textured fingers. (The # you gave shows the glove: Uline Supraflex Nitrile Gloves - Powder-Free, S-15639M INDUSTRIAL I can't seem to find ANY glove, online, on Uline website, amazon, etc, that are industrial gloves, that are smooth. The only nitrile gloves i found on Uline that are smooth are the ones indicated in their video, but they only come in 3 mil option. I see some gloves have a deep diamond texture. I assume by calling the gloves smooth, you must mean that they have a relatively smoother texture, & so are smooth in comparison? Thanks.

      You have to work very fast and keep wetting the concrete. No you cannot work on it later. Paltiya is a concrete product with fibers you use in a thin coating over an armature. This product though expensive does allow you to work on it over time. Check their website it is very informative and a great product..

      I make pots with hypertufu thats is ehen you add peat moss and vermiculite to the mix it is much more organic looking for plantings. There are many different formulas for hypertufu i dont make them anymore but still use the ones i originally made. My best advice if making pots wrap them in plastic and slow cure them s fee weeks half way through take them out snd brush with a steel brush. They will then look like old stone vessels! Wrap and finish curing do mot hurry the process as it makes them stronger.
