Photographer from Cape Town, discovering new ways to improve my work, have fun and bring you along!
Should you edit your film photos?
Here's a quick look at my film editing process and my take on editing film scans. I also did a side by side comparison of scans from two separate labs to demonstrate the importance of using a good lab when getting your negatives scanned.
The bad/pharmacy lab will remain unnamed, whilst the good scans were from Cape Film Supply.

Is this the BEST medium format film camera ever? | Contax 645
Просмотров 1,9 тыс.7 месяцев назад
I spent a weekend with the Contax 645 medium format film camera. This Camera was kindly sent to me by Skiet Co. along with some film sponsored by Cape Film Supply. Over the weekend I booked a studio with my friend Adi Rosow, and we organised some models and a stylist for a portrait studio session with the Contax 645. Over the entire weekend, I shot 5 rolls of medium format film, 3 rolls of Port...

How to Colour Grade SLOG3 Footage in Davinci Resolve (Free Version)
It's always weird for me to see these types of videos pop up, as if editing photos isn't something that's just as old as photography itself. Cropping is editing. Straightening your horizon lines is editing. Dodging and burning, also editing. Maybe Cartier-Bresson didn't crop his shots, but he sure as hell edited them to make sure they looked good in the final print. I know "editing" in this usage refers more to digital manipulation, but it's weird that folks act like Man Ray wasn't solarizing and heavily editing his work in the 20's and 30's.
CFS rents out their scanner right?
@@HomeGrownPyrotechnics they rent out their Imacon, yes 😊
I feel like my unedited film photos look much better than my unedited digital photos.
@@rwinkler4321 I completely agree! After all film was designed to have a certain “look” that’s why there are so many different films, all with different looks! 😁
scan on the right looks really bad as well
@@alexiscastro5055 how so? They’re very sharp and have relatively true to life colours. What do you look for in a good scan?
@ one is too green, the other is too magenta
@ I agree, however the magenta doesn’t make it a bad scan. Like I said the lab doesn’t always know what the image is “supposed” to look like. Hence my slight edits I make to my scans to compensate for the edits done by the lab. But aside from a slight magenta I’m always super happy with my scans from Cape Film Supply. 😁
@@emrhyssstead yeah I get you, wonder what the lab is using to scan it. I have a scanner at home, lets me do most of my work at home. I’ve noticed the images come back a little warmer as opposed to my at home scans.
@ so I CFS used a frontier and I’m not sure about the other lab 🤔 CFS has frontier, Noritsu and Imacon but I tend to prefer the scans out of the Frontier usually. Would love to try Mirrorless scanning one day with something like a GFX

Is it okay to edit on your phone?
@@tonedeaf_film I edit on my phone A LOT! Especially if I’m just posting on Instagram 📱
@@tonedeaf_film I have Lightroom on my phone but you can get away with IPhones standard editing features (I do this sometimes too)
Best explanation so far!!
@@ownvideofootage glad you enjoyed the video!!
camera ninja moves
Nice creative use of flash.
Hint: Price pf of lemon juice or real lemons is about 10x - 20x more costly than commercial photo stop bath. Triple that if you make your own stop bath from super-market products.
Pros: Best overall features and controls. Best lenses. Very convenient to use. Cons: Most expensive, body, lenses, and accessories, by far. Many of the listed lenses and accessories were practically never available when new, so great list of such for the system is largely a fraud. Least likely to find used lenses and accessories. Complexity means most likely to break down, by far. No parts (and no hoard of broken cameras to provide used parts). Almost no repairman will work on it. Summary: $10,000 (US)for decent, used one body system. When something in its all electronic system failures, it's a total loss of camera and a huge investment write-off. Class of equipment: "Enjoy it while you can." Likely buyer: Scrooge McDuck
Scrooge McDuck just made my day 😂
Sick photos! Crazy how the flash gives such a darker vibe.
Totally! Thanks for watching and be sure to sub for more!
🤘🏾🤘🏾🤘🏾nice review gang
@@blckbutterfly thanks king! 👑
Doesn’t have auto focus. In any of the zone focus settings, the half press of the shutter moves the lens to the focus point for what you have selected on the zone focus ring. In Auto mode it moves the lens to the hyper focal distance to get everything from infinity to a close distance in focus based on the aperture.

I'm guessing it didn't work out for you 😅
How do you know what power setting to put the flash on so that you don't blow out the image?
@@DillonKin in this video I was just going for the brightest or close to the brightest power setting and then using F11-F16 on my lens based on the subject being around 1-2meters away.

@@archglencoe8557 yea definitely needs a hot shoe, I don’t think there’s any way to hookup a sync cable ✨
@@emrhyssstead Is that not the jack input next to the micro USB input @1:18?
@@justinkingery2489 you’re right it is!
With most old manual flashes for film cameras they had a scale for choosing the power. Is there a scale for this where you can choose for ISO and distance to get the aperture? I really want to use this flash on my film SLR on an evening / blue hour just puzzled off what I should be setting my EXP for still street portraits to get a bit of ambient light and flash the subject
@@BTDJ_academy Hey, unfortunately it doesn’t have a scale but I’m sure you could find one online for it. I’m also used to using my old flashes for SLRs that have a chart on the back. But I just went with the good old “full power” f16 2m rule 😅 and that worked for most of the portraits I’ve shot with this. I think have a look for a chart online or maybe run a test roll through and try it out in a few scenarios. I think once you find the sweet spot for it, then it’ll become second nature
i’ve hunted high & low. i use the same flash on my x100v so i guess i could mimic the settings in the same scenario but just put a fixed ISO of 200 on the x100v there is a few good flash with film videos i’ve found but none mention what shutter speed they actually are using, they mention their cameras max flash sync speed but not what they are using on the camera do you always use the camera max? eg. my Canon EOS-3 has max of 1/200 normally on my x100v on a night with a touch of ambience i would set my iso at 640, SS at 1/60 to capture the ambience of the background, ap at 5.6 then just test shout the flash power setting till i find a power i like
@@BTDJ_academy most of my cameras have a set camera sink speed typically 1/60 of a second. But when I threw this flash on my A7 S3, which I think can sync at almost shutter speed, no issues. I definitely think it would be a good idea to chuck it on your X100V and mimic the settings you plan on using on your film camera. Set up 200 ISO on your X100 if you plan on shooting 200 speed film. And then match the sync speed of what your film camera would be like 1/60 of a second for example. Because I’m pretty sure the x100v can sync at most of the flash sink speeds you will find on your film cameras. Let me know how it goes. I’m interested in hearing more and seeing your work! Thanks for watching the video, subscribe for more! 😁

The prices on that website are only in SA currency it seems. Can't see how much it costs in dollars.
It’s around $85 👑💸
@@emrhyssstead Thank you I found it on Amazon. Appreciate your video showing this thing off.
Doesn't have auto mode, so quite a mediocre flash for film
Please mind the horizontal and vertical lines in the photos. All outdoor images shown are crooked one way or another. This might work if one was taking dynamic, striking photos from a position low to the ground, but detracts from the subject of these images. Kind of works with the last series of photos, but even there wasn't necessary. With the studio photos the composition isn't tight enough, you are wasting 40-50% of each film frame. You do get the models' faces in the best portion of the lens (centre), which is always good, but not necessary with a good quality lens like Zeiss Planar. If you were paying for the lab, that means 40-50% of the money spent also goes down the drain. All this leads to spending more time in post later to make the photos usable and not maximising the frame area you have available. Good luck and all the best.
Thanks for the input mate, good thing I wasn't paying for the film or the lab, I should seriously be more careful! Check out my Instagram account to see my usual style of work @emrhyssstead 🎞

You should /really/ try the Rollei Hy6/Leaf AFi. 6x6 or 645. AF. WLF/45/90 options. SK optics. Absolute dream.
Also: i) most AF medium format cameras have auto advance. Hasselblad H, Rollei Hy6, Mamiya 645AF, ..pretty much all the Fujis.. ii) it's big because it's an SLR. That's it.
