    I am thinking of someone I have played with who has been challenging. I have decided that he likes to shock his scene partners. Sometimes he does this by completely changing character or doing something that totally blocks his scene partner. How would standing by your gift apply to that situation?

    • @ShannonStottImprov
      @ShannonStottImprov Год назад

      Wanted to think about this one. In either example, changing character or blocking, you are not the only one thrown, your audience will feel just as surprised and confused as you are. Here, what you want and what the audience wants is to stay grounded and hold onto anything solid (relationship, environment, point of view, object ect. ) that you have already established for yourself in the scene. THAT is your gift to you and to the audience, returning to what has been established. In doing so you'll find direction and your audience will follow. Thank you for asking and Let me know what happens next!

    Brilliant thoughts on the fear response. 11:06 - That’s one thing I’m planning on building my instruction around, deepening into the kinesthetic and somatic responses to feel before making a response in a scene. Learning to be okay with the tension instead of pushing away from it and making an active decision to lean in or away from it.

    • @ShannonStottImprov
      @ShannonStottImprov Год назад

      Yes! Yes yes! When we all do this, our play slows down just a bit, giving us time to respond. I know that's blasphemy for some, but truly, it's like anything, it takes practice, as soon as you get better at it, your play will pick up again if thats what you want, but you'll have this new depth of play and listening and responding.

    This is super weird. Just a couple of days back, I got a feedback on the need to make bold choices and not take a safer option in my scenes. Almost serendipitously, I get a post that cites your video on Taking risks on my FB news feed. I have a followup query: Does taking risk, imply making much more imaginative choices? Please share a couple of examples. P.S: These videos are really helpful. Thanks.

    • @ShannonStottImprov
      @ShannonStottImprov 4 года назад

      Siddharth, Thank you for reaching out! I hope your Improv journey is going well overall. I’m so happy to have popped up in your feed. What a complex question, I love it. Taking risks can mean so many things for different people. For those who don’t get on stage first it can mean doing that. For those who always start scenes, taking a risk can look like waiting (and trusting) for someone else to start the scene. You asked “Does taking risk, imply making much more imaginative choices?” You Said “Please share a couple of examples” -If you (you Siddharth or you, the reader) tend to enter scenes playing characters that are not too far from yourself, a bolder choice or “taking a risk” might look like entering the scene with a body posture that is very different from how you move through the world and sticking with it the entire scene. -If you tend to do a great job supporting other people's ideas on stage a bolder choice or taking a risk might be making the first offer or knowing the answer. Instead of saying I don’t know or “what do you think” try “ I know exactly [what it is/ what to do /where we are” or “I think that…” Taking risks does not always mean having the MOST imaginative offer, not everything needs to be “look at that Dragon” or “Oh no we’re out of oil for our time machine.’’ Taking a risk or making a bolder choice looks like taking a look at what you ALWAYS do on stage and doing something different. Consider your own character choices, the way you tend to support scenes and the thing you are most comfortable doing on stage. Choose one of those things to practice with. In your next rehearsal make an effort to do that thing very differently. It’ll feel a little scary, but that is precisely what taking a risk is. I hope this helps at all Siddharth, tell me how it goes, I am rooting for you!

      @@ShannonStottImprov Thank you so much. What a brilliant way to explain, this is a Godsend. I am going to have a look at what I do ALWAYS and try and do something different. From the top of my mind, I usually play low status characters, probably because it is natural. I will be more aware and try to choose high status characters and observe it. Thank you once again.

    "Improv teaches us how to create a world with others" <3 I also loved what Zach said about the capacity for empathy/attunement/compassion being dependent upon internal regulation - the importance of awareness of how you are coming into an interaction or conversation (Neutral? Defensive? Comfortable?) as a precursor to being able to attune to the other person's experience.

    I really like this! The 'I've got your back' phrase is new to me! I've been doing Improv in the Netherlands for five years now and we don't do it this explicit (although we really should!). We do have our rituals which convey the feeling of togetherness and got-your-back-ness. And being in that moment, really listening to that _before_ the show has even started is a really good one. Thanks!

      @@ShannonStottImprov One of the things we did was, after the warming-up was done, we'd put our hands over each other's shoulders so we'd make a circle and do a little dance. Slow at first, picking up in speed. A bit of a mix of Zorba, the greek Dance, and a russian dance. It would speed up until we'd reach a crescendo and we'd end on a high note. Without words, we shared that moment in the circle together. Even if we didn't actually say 'I got your back', it did feel like it.
