016 - "A Journey in the Dark" - Fool of a Took Podcast
The fellowship make their way into the Mines of Moria, Chris learns the etymology of the word "midnight", and Gandalf finally goes full Boomer. This week we discuss book 2, chapter 4, "A Journey in the Dark", from The Fellowship of the Ring.
Today's "Food For Thought": A Journey into Dark Chocolate and Wine
There was little food to be had in this chapter, and certainly nothing exciting. So- another play on the chapter title!
Wine and chocolate pairings are great; in this episode I did a dry, full-bodied red (Bordeaux style) with dark chocolate- both 72% and 86% cocoa. Try with some other dry reds like Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, etc., and see how each melds with the chocolate flavors...

    I finally caught up on these videos -- I love your commentary! You have so much fun with each other and have awesome observations! I am really enjoying journeying with you. The elves that lived in Eregion / Hollin were particularly friendly with dwarves partly because they were of Feanor's folk, who was the great craftsman (he made the Silmarils) and so they had that affinity with the dwarves. The Lord of that land had been Celebrimbor (grandson of Feanor) who was the maker of the 3 elvish rings of rings of power and (with Annatar/Sauron) the maker of the 7 and 9. (Sauron, of course, made the One). Noon comes from the canonical hour nones (the 9th hour) -- originally around 3 PM; no one is quite sure how it moved back to 12. The canonical hours are the set hours at which monks in monasteries pray the Liturgy of the Hours (in traditional terminology: Lauds (morning), Terce (midmorning), Sext (midday - 6th hour), None (afternoon), Vespers (evening), Compline (night)

    Gandalf is wearing Narya, the ring of fire, when this happens. The warming is not from the alcohol but from the kindling of hope within the fellowship. as Cirdan tells Gandalf when he gifts the ring to him: "For this is the Ring of Fire, and with it you may rekindle hearts in a world that grows chill."

    Just found this channel over Christmas -- loving the discussion. Couple things -- don't think the cordial of Imaldris was alcoholic, just a reviving drink. Also, consider that Gandalf had a couple months while the scouts were out to be annoyed by Pippin, not to mention several days of trekking in awful weather

    Once Gandalf found out about Bilbo's old ring he traveled and studied nonstop to figure out what it was for 17 years. He didn't just guess. When he came back after 17 years, he came back with a test for the ring. If it is the one ring and you throw it into a fire the inscription will show. It did. It wasn't at all a guess. I would question the whole "it has to be thrown into the volcano that was involved in its creation" myth because that sounds exactly like what someone who wanted their ring back would say. You have to throw it into the volcano to destroy it and definitely not give the volcano a seed for which to grow a new body for Sauron. Volcanos get hot but so do forges, I would think it weird to have to bring the ring back to the manufacture to in order to break it. Generally you bring things back to the manufacturer in order for them to fix it.

    • @pouncet1683
      @pouncet1683 8 дней назад

      It is I think about the magical part of the ring. It is based on North myth and there volcanos where most the time the forges for magic things. Destroying it by simple means would be another question but it has to end where it began is very mythological.

    Gandalf studied meticulously for months in Gondor about the ring. He's a demigod so that's a safe bet. Also every time Frodo wears it, the Nazghul locates and Sauron gives him the stinky eye.

    The thing with the lion king is that Simba is the rightful king , but do we actually know that the fully grown lion we see fight Scar is actually Simba? Or did timon and Pumba meet another lion and Nala assumed it was the same Simba? Think about that

    lol no, frodo understands that there is no going back, that the journey will change him forever and sometimes there is no happily ever after. bilbo went “ there and back again” but frodo was “ fleeing danger into mortal peril” ( fleeing black riders to journey to mordor) he leaves to Valinor with the Elves after the ring is destroyed, he knows the ring altered him and he saw the effect its had on gollum. Frodo wasnt the “happy go lucky” type like his hobbit friends. he was more solemn, had a penchant for solo walks, and knew high elven speech. the books describe his character development

      They are already leaving regardless of what happens with the Ring. The are leavign middle earth before the Ring is found and it being found didnt change their plans. They are leaving their mess to the Race of Men. The elves Frodo and Sam meet night 1 of their Journey are on their way to the grey havens. Also Elrond legit says " my people are leaving this land" before the council of Elrond.

    Speaking of Gandalf picking on Pippin. There is something that Professor Olsen has termed "Hobbitry." It's the way hobbits pull pranks and throw joky insults. Gandalf is quite good at their form of humor. Much of the time when members of the party are throwing shade at the hobbits, this is what they're engaging in.

    Boromir is such a sitcom character. Elrond, the 2500 year old master of the universe spends an entire chapter explaining to Boromir multiple times that Sauron is so unstoppably powerful, so unbelievably influential, so inevitably omnipotent, that their only almost non existent chance of victory requires 110% stealth and the very first thing Boromir does, immediately, as if it’s obvious and second nature like it didn’t even occur to him not to, was to blow his horn so loudly that everyone on the planet hears it and knows he’s coming

    Iirc the six pony mention in the earlier chapter was a remnant of an earlier draft where Fredegar Bolger went with them instead of staying behind. It was eventually caught, and so in some editions it's been corrected to five.
