When I first became aware of Oldfield it was because of The Exorcist and Tubular Bells, but at that time I wasn't ready for his music. I liked it, of course, but I didn't feel compelled to find more. I was into Broadway in those days (and Disco -- cringe) and soon forgot about him. So, at last, I'm hearing this for the first time and it's all I had hoped.
So surprised to find Oldfield, I was a young woman when I listened to his music tge first time, something like 40 years ago! I loved him soo much. What a splendid music! Thank you for uploading this one!
I've been listening to this album for 42 years and I'm increasingly moved. How crazy! I can't say if he's beautiful or not, I just know that he's essential to me --- a very important part of my life is linked to Ommadawn and that's wonderful!
Back when it was released I borrowed this from the local library and accidentally played the whole thing at 45 rpm . i rather enjoyed it although I was a bit disappointed at how short it was .
There was Mozart, Bach, Heidel, ... and various other musical geniuses and there is Mike Oldfield..... a genius of our time. We should be happy to be able to hear his genius today and not centuries later.
I never watched The Exorcist so I always wondered how an album of folk/ambient music by a hippie-looking Mike Oldfield ended in a horror movie. Many years passed and now I think understand what Friedkin was thinking. With the right mindset, and maybe an 16-bit or slowed+reverb cover would help, even Ommadawn sounds creepy. The cutesy tunes strangely coming and going, played in the most basic analogue organs, accompanying flutes and guitars.
I'll tell you what Ommadawn sounds like to me. Like an 80's adventure movie soundtrack. It has whimsical moments, sombre moments, creepy moments. But put together, it's a complete and beautiful journey. Each part on it's own is beautiful, and combined it's even moreso.
The pied piper calling us to his enchanted woods of eerie & strange sounds, singing, and disquieting laughter afar with fair voices whispering like the summer wind calling our names to return home with green fields and quiet waters and remember this is where I belong as if a distant memory were falling from a great height.
Side one of this album was about as close as Mr Oldfield got to perfection, I think. It's still utterly engrossing and engaging after all these years. Wonderful, wonderful stuff.
I bought this album when it was first released, I love it but no else I know seems to like it or 'gets it'. This medium (youtube comments) at last lets me know I'm not alone.
Beautiful,picture too ❤️

IMHO the best version of Incantations is on the live album EXPOSED. Much more on the point and same delicacy
Great music to listen to while reading the Hobbit.....
It's a pity last seconds of this album had been cut... But it's simply amazing. One of Mike's best works.

For me Is incantations l'album beatiful for Platinum
X me è incantations l'album più bello
his music makes my head & spirit spin around like the gal in The Exorcist.....in a great way, of course....still sounds great after many years...
Awesome. Hard to believe but the live version on the 'Exposed' album is even better. One of the best pieces of music I have ever heard.

Anyone 6/1/24?

Beautiful, inspirational and uplifting and as good as the first time I heard it all those years ago.

It was a magical moment when i listen this album .... winter, night, cold, solitude, silence ... At the end, pleasure
The bend at 32:33 is simply impossibly ridiculous and infinitely beautiful at the same time.
One of the most sublime, monumental creations in the history of mankind!
Ommadawn sounds very like the Irish 'amadan'. . . was that in his mind?
I am blown away whenever i hear this album. No less by Maddy Priors singing Always wanted to see it performed live.
