    My favourite RUclipsr! Another wrinkle on the meet/see dichotomy is "meet" is generally reserved for first time meetings or formal situations like business meetings while "see" is typically applied to casual, familiar situations. So you'd say "I met Malala on Tuesday" because she's an internationally renowned human rights leader, not a personal friend. "I saw Malala on Tuesday" on the other hand implies that Malala may be a close personal friend. However, if the "meeting" wasn't planned but accidental you'd say "I ran into Malala on Tuesday." "Run into" only applies informal, casual situations.

    Great video. I think memorizing words is good practice but it’s not something that works for everyone. If the student can use the word they will often find it easier to recall it later. The connection is key.

    • @skyeworld_explore
      @skyeworld_explore 4 года назад

      Thank you very much! I wanted to have an open discussion over this topics and get some fresh ideas i couldn't think about! :) yeah it doesnt' work for everyone! that's a really good point! yeah connection is key and we gotta lead them to use the word they've acquired in class! Today, I asked my kids about how they normally pick up the words they learned. And they said they are usually writing words several times on their notes..yeah i gotta figure it out how they could learn words in a meaningful way! Thank you !!

  • @nurdyburdy4410
    @nurdyburdy4410 4 года назад

    Waaaaaa! Yumi, you're a RUclipsr! Congratulations! That's a good question, how DO you memorize vocabulary? Maybe it's the wrong question. Some people are good at memorization but, for others it’s a struggle. And for still others it’s sheer torture. Maybe the problem is with memorization itself. You probably remember from your boring lectures on learner modalities or learning styles that there are many kinds of learners and, as teachers, we have to try to engage each type. By focusing on memorization we’re really just pandering to one type, the abstract learner, to the exclusion of all others. You probably heard the term, kinesthetic learners or tactile learners, something like that. These kinds of learners have an urge to interact with the learning material in a physical way. Many more boys are like that than girls. That’s why they get out of their seats and wander around the class. They get labelled ADHD but they aren’t, they’re just tactile learners and they get restless when they have to learn in an abstract way all the time. So how to engage them? It depends of course but here’s a simple exercise that could be used to teach school- and classroom-related vocab. Get each student to look up online or in a dictionary and write the name of something in the room on a post-it note and then quickly stand up and stick the note on the object it represents. So you’ll get stuff like “whiteboard,” “wall,” “door,” “desk,” “marker” and so on. Speed is important because if someone else has already marked your object you have to start over and name a new object. Once the objects are marked you can leave the post-its in place and drill the students [choral drills only at first, you don’t want to put any students on-the-spot,] pointing at the objects and saying “What is it?” or “What are they?” Insist that they answer with full sentences: “wall” or “marker” isn’t good enough. They need to be responding to your call to action: “It’s a wall” or “They’re markers.” Make sure they use contractions and make sure the plurals are used when required. Now they’re getting practice with both plurals and pronouns. Drill them again the next day. On the third day, make a game of it. Divide the class into teams and get them to compete at drilling each other. Now you’ve moved into the role of facilitator. Insist that they ask and answer correctly, gaining or losing points accordingly. The “What are they?” is now just as important as the “They’re markers.” Now they’re getting practice at making unscripted questions as well as plurals, contractions and pronouns. These students are learning natural, reality-based speech. Too easy? Make it harder by putting Post-its on all the easy stuff like “door” and “desk” at the beginning of the class but be sure you elicit these from the students. Elicit the spelling too. Make the little buggers work! On Zoom: Such an exercise is easily repeatable on Zoom. Just have every student grab an object from home and teach its name to all the others. Such an approach can be adapted to many other classes of vocabulary as well. Get them to draw and name animals on the whiteboard, one animal per person. Get them to mime verbs [run, walk, stand up, turn around...,] one verb per person. Show a picture of a fruit, a veggie on their smart phones and teach it’s name orally only. Follow up by having the students teach the spelling the next day. And so on... Will it be chaotic? Absolutely. Language is best learned in chaos. Nobody learns their mother tongue from a syllabus. The human brain excels at organizing chaos. That’s what we call “learning.” In this scenario, nobody has memorized a thing but they’ve all learned many things.

      Aw! Thank you very much CAPTAIN! i REALLY DO appreciate of you for sharing your ideas! It makes me think in a lot of ways like how i should teach kids in class.. I couldn't agree with you more! yes for some, memorizing words seem easy, for others, it could be sheer tortures. I found it really important as a teacher to guide my students in the right directions. I hope they regard English as something fun, something they can enjoy without pressures and pick up vocabularies in a natural, reality-based way like you mentioned. Yeah lots of types of learners..!I think i have to remind that facts again and again..and organized my lesson plan or teaching styles carefully! That's a really good exercise! Yeah allowing them to use online dictonaries or dictionaries seems important ! umm Im thinking by doing that, the pressure of studnets could surely be lessen..!! Eliciting answers as well as question sentence forms, spellings...! yeah we teacher should let them have some opportunities to recall what they are already know and encourage them to think by themselves. Yeah we gotta be careful not to put them on the spot..!! Your comment literally make me think how to approach to my kids in a fresh way open perspectives! And your your last three sentences hit me a lot..! Language is best learned inchaos.. yes nobody learns their mother tongue from a syllabus..! haha yees how powerful and mysterious our brain is..!! Thank you again!! :)

      Today, I started teaching kids using Zoom! Half of the students were in my class, and the other half were staying home and learning via Zoom app! Having every students grab an object sounds really good idea to engage them tho they couldn't be at the classroom with other half of the students! I could strongly feel ever since covid-19 hits, classroom sceneries changed a lot. I could more focus on the students becuase only the half come to school. But at the same times I do think I need to think about what kinds of alternatives activities i could apply in this situations. you know I do love doing activities with my students, letting them walk around and use the key expressions of the lesson. It's really peaceful, students are mostly very calm and quiet. And sometimes i do kind of the miss the active vibe in class and giggling sounds of kids, and having some bonds with my studnets :)

    Once people become used to a sentence or a short paragraph, they can get every word of it and in it by reading again and again. Sometimes it will take more than a week to memorize them but no problem at all as those words will help students to understand other words and sentences better. That's how I have studied English since when I was a middle school student. I bought a few word books but never finished reading any of them. Even when preparing for TOEIC I didn't get that much help from the word list book but I hit the full score of RC. I just read all the sentences in those books for the test again and again, more than ten times I guess.

      First off, I do want to say I appreciate of you for leaving a comment and sharing your idea! That's really fresh method of memorizing words! I never thought of memorizing words in that way! it sounds very meaningful way of picking up the vocabulary! your comment made me think like yeah it would be really difficult for students to memorize words without any context..like just memorizing words out of the words list! Thank you again for sharing your insightful ideas! It does make sense! It will be very helpful for my students to learn new words!
