So the umpires were following the rule for an illegal bat. The rules never actually said what the penalty was for too much pine tar. The ruling was that excessive pine tar was not an illegal bat. By next season the penalty was written into the rule book (removal of the bat but no other penalties). You left out another incident of the restarted game.
