Your personal journey is you grew up in a backwards evangelical family in a backwards evangelical town, which are two things I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy, you realized you were gay, you got yourself out, a feat in and of itself, some years into living as your authentic self you came down with what is essentially OCD except for gender expression, you got top surgery from a doctor who was unscrupulous enough to operate on you with the size you were (and anyone who would operate on someone with a BMI over 35 is usually not very good at what they do), so now you look f*cking ridiculous but you can't say anything because it would mean the end of your professional life and probably your personal life, too.

You wrote a book and no one really cares. It's time to grow up and stop acting out as a self centred child. Your not special, but hopefully someone loves you regardless.

I enjoyed hearing of Red Pine's collaboration with John Blofeld, Blofeld's autobiography 'City of Lingering Splendor' has always been a favorite, a window into a vanished world

May I suggest that ancient Chinese poetry teaches us by it's very existence, that life endures like grass through the concrete sidewalk.

I've never read any of JB's books but after watching & loving 'Arkansas' numerous times i can't wait to read it or any other of his books. I just read on google that he's heavily influenced by Flannery O'Conner. That makes me want to read his books even more.

Just a quick layman thing to add: I think not having commentary is not western in general, but a thing (or not) in the English speaking sphere. There are quite a lot of commentaries in german, but I also can't compare it to China.

Amazing! So interesting to see how an artist works from the beginning to the end.

Non-academic (but still learned) translators are the best - 100000 bonus points if you're a practitioner too :) thank you Red Pine for being great!

I studied with John Blofield when I lived in Thailand as a kid (1966-69), He was a wonderful eccentric man who lived many years in China, during the war he worked to preserve art and artifacts. Mr. Porter looks great - no worries -
