The Englishman who Became Head of THAI at Bangkok's Most Prestigious School
Meet Gerry Carter, teacher, journalist and professional scrabble player, an Englishman who first arrived on the shores of Koh Samui, Thailand in 1982, whereupon he set out to master the Thai language. Well, he certainly did that and, with hard work, became Head of Thai at the newly established Harrow International School. He has Thai permanent residency and thus has the right to abode in Thailand for life. As a journalist, translator and columnist for many years for Thai Visa/ASEAN Now, he was known as 'ROOSTER'. Gerry/the Rooster is currently enjoying retirement from his nest in Bangkok.

Why is Songkran NOT celebrated in the BIGGEST District of Bangkok??

During my early days in the Big Mango, the whole of the city used to transform overnight into a water war zone during Songkran and nobody was safe, policemen took off "upcountry", shops shut, roads turned into teenage motorbike race tracks and everything stopped.... or so it certainly appeared to me at the time. I'd be interested to hear what book Gerry used to learn how to read Thai. The book I used was "The Fundamentals of the Thai Language (fifth edition)". That was the go-to book for many of us back in the day. It's gone out-of-print, and would be outdated, but there's been nothing published since that's matched its breadth in a single volume. After finishing that book, I made a giant leap to the "Thai Cultural Reader". That was some tough going at the beginning, but after I finished it I could get the gist of most of the Thai reading material I came across. In the '90s I was reading more Thai novels than English ones.

      I'm Gerry. That is exactly the book I used in conjunction with the forty lesson Linguaphone course that I did about four times. @@gerrycarter1107I used some of the AUA textbooks for self-study when I was back in the States. I'd study the text in the evening and practice with the cassette tapes on the drive to and from work. When I returned to Thailand after three years in the US, my Thai friends were shocked that I could speak with some fluency. My reading skills peaked in the 90s when I was working as a translator. I used to start the day by reading Muay Siam daily for at least an hour. I need to get back in the habit of starting the day off with a good read. One tip I'd recommend to anyone who's reached a high level is to start using a Thai language only dictionary. SE-ED books has an excellent one. The appendices cover just about anything you can think of. Another good book is คลังคำ. It's similar to a thesaurus, but the words are grouped by category. BTW, I used to teach ESL to Japanese in the Sukhumvit area myself in the 90s. I was working for a small agency until the owner was killed in a motorcycle accident. After that I worked mostly on my own. You must remember John Moriarty. He was well-known in those days.

      @@JBWanders73 All the time. A few weeks ago I fell asleep listening to a livestream where a man from Esarn was talking to a couple of Lao women. I had a dream that I was on a bus somewhere in Thailand, but I couldn't figure out where. I started to panic because I had no idea how I was going to get back to Bangkok. The bus stopped at a station and I was trying to ask people where we were, but no one would answer. Everyone was staring at me because my phone was on speakerphone and it was getting louder and louder. When I got my phone out of my pocket I tried to turn down the volume but the button wouldn't work. People were starting to get angry with me which made me panic more. I heard the voice on my speakerphone mention Laos, and I realized that's where I was. I was in Laos not Thailand! I then woke up suddenly to realize that the sound on my phone was the livestream I'd fallen asleep listening to. 🤣 I could actually follow the conversation in my dream. The following week I had a similar experience. I woke up mid sentence to hear the same voice that I'd heard in my dream.

    I think there is something to be said here, but I often find that "not caring what anyone else thinks" can be seen as a carte blanche to be able to act however you want and disregard what others feelings are often. Now, this isn't always the case, but if people "dont like us" there is often, not always, a reason for this, and often this reason is because we haven't done well by them or have been mean or have a tendency to disregard their feelings and simply focus on ourselves, to hell with anyone else. So, it's a double edged sword. I also think that while it is good to control our emotions, a lot of what it sounds like is going on here is repressing them, which really doesn't allow us to feel the fullness of what is going on. It's just another way of kicking the can down the road. But, I do respect the effort.

So, even if you just see it from the point of view of the Americans glorifying it like this is such a load of bollocks it’s unbelievable. That’s when you think about the people just across the border in Vietnam for 2 million people died which means millions and millions of families had to go through the pain of knowing that a foreign invader had taken the lives of their kids their old people, their fathers their mothers. It's a great area to live. Fantastic food and markets around too. I will check out the new 'wetlands' area near Seri Thai Park in Beung Kum maybe today or tomorrow. I don't think it's open yet but I'll see if they will let me wander through.

    Completely agree, the culture in the UK is soaked in booze. From binge drinking nightlife, people drinking a bottle of wine every night at home - but even a social event at your local church is going to feature alcohol! My old man was an alcoholic and it nearly killed him, he got sober and never drank again but our childhood was ruined by his drinking. I wasn't a huge drinker, but had plenty of benders like most people - i woke up one day and I don't really know why but just decided I'm not going to drink anymore and that was 10 years ago. Life immediately got better, now i see around me and I'm positive that at least about 10 people I know and am friends with if for some reason they could not have a drink - say they ended up on a desert island they would go into withdrawal probably full on DTs. They would not think they have a problem, they have jobs and a family but they drink every single day of the week and have done for years - 2 or 3 pints or a bottle of wine. But certainly in the UK its almost impossible to not be anywhere where there is not alcohol or somebody doesn't offer you a drink. I'm pretty sure the UK is full of functioning alcoholics but they just don't know it. Re Kratom - yes i have heard about people getting off opiates via Kratom, and it does have benefits, but be careful with it and respect it. But speaking from experience it is addictive and the withdrawals are on a par with opiate withdrawals. We had a weird little scene about 5 years ago when it was legal in the UK, started buying it online as powder - and i liked it, before long using everyday throughout the day, spending more and more money. When it came to stopping it was hard, going through about 14 days of withdrawals - so be careful.

      I agree with you completely regarding the alcohol and the UK mate. I've only ever tried krathom on a few occasions (always in a tea). I'm a Jamaican woodbine man myself, without the baccy haha. You'd have to ask Paul but if pushed, I would say that he is addicted to krathom. I'm not sure if he's ever tried to stop. Thanks for the warning mate 🙏✌

    I’m drawn to Thailand RUclipsrs who made permanent moves to Thailand when they were young. I myself met a married a Thai woman in 2003 and tortured myself a couple years with very little sleep figuring out if I wanted stay in Thailand or in my home country. I loved everything about Thailand and felt sad coming back to my home country when my visit was nearing an end. I had no money at the time and an average job but I now had to support my wife, step daughter and wife’s parents. I chose my home country. It turned out to be a good decision for me financially. I’ve always heard make your fortune in your home country and take your fortune to Thailand and retire.

      I guess everyone is different. I married into a middle class family and all the borrowing over the years has been by me from them. I went back to England for almost four years, 2005-2009, before returning. As my old mate Dirty Jim said, go wild here in your 20s, go home to make real money and then come back for retirement. For me, it's been a bit different as I've been able to educate my son in a prestigious British school (through my wife's job) with a huge discount. My son's education has beaten everything over the years for me. The time we may have returned was during the Global shitshow. However, my son has just about finished his A-levels so I must find a new chapter now. Financially, your way is the right way for most deffo mate. I am skint but happy as a pig in sh*te 🙏✌

    I was just in Thailand for the first time I didn't find the Thais to be happy I found them to be rude and angry for most part.

    • @JBWanders73
      @JBWanders73 6 дней назад

      Most of the tourist areas are like that... people become jaded with a plethora of rude tourists. That's why I rarely visit such areas. For example, I always found the people on Khao San to be very rude, particularly if you tried to speak Thai, so I last visited there in 2001. 'Tis the same in Spain and other places. Luckily, the tourist areas are tiny in comparison to the rest of the country.

    First it's pretty dope that you had an Alex Face shirt on, then it's dope that Goldie of all people stopped you to ask about it in the middle of Bangkok.

      Got a few shirts - love them, thanks! I was going to visit Aurum Gallery anyway that morning but I had no idea Goldie was in town (he lives in Phuket). It was quite a shock! My only regret is that I have the mask on in the picture - it was very much expected at the time.

    I drink a little too often for opposite reason - it did do good things for my life. Helped me de-stress after work, I'm quite serious and it makes me non serious, i'm more chatty. I also like to go to social events if I can drink but stay in if i want to be sober. Only reason I want to cut back is because of the money and its hard to lose weight drinking 3 times a week
