First Cast to Double Haul- Basic Casts
Really enjoyed this. Have used this fly to great success over the years. Just a small comment though, it was a little tough for me to hear Barry. The music is fine its just makes it a little hard to hear him (for me). A little clearer audio if possible would be greatly appreciated. Tight lines everyone.
Thank You!
RIP pioneer
Good video. I am new to FF trying to learn this double haul
Used to be my favorite river I have fished it for over 40 years , fished it last year 60+ boats . It’s going to get loved to death . Thanks for sharing
Wow Barry Great to see you here. How is Cathy? Been to your shop years ago. We used to go for our weekly visit there
Nice trout!
Excellent video!
Thank you.
Very clear explanation - Thanks!
This is probably the best double haul instruction I have found yet. It’s very very well explained and demonstrated. Thank you!
Nice. I've watched your channel and I enjoy them all... Is it possible to show the recipe, a list of the incredients Thank you
👍
Excellent fly. Well done Barry!
This has been my favorite fly for years. I've caught rainbow, browns, multiple species of bass and panfish, and even a chain pickerel in a river where I had no idea they were there.
Nice hog!!
Wow, what a wonderful place !
What kind of line would you use to learn on
For simply distance I would use a RIO Outbound Short. If presentation is also a criteria I would use a RIO WF Perception Elite. Thanks for asking.
Two of my very favorite people and true ambassadors for fly fishing and fly tying! They have helped so many people get started in the sport and helped those they are passionate about fly fishing improve and become better anglers and fly tiers! Truly wonderful people!🙏
Excellent tutorial.
Thank you.
Great Video very complete
Best explication available on RUclips. Thank you!
Thank you.
Thank you Ryan.
Good info been doing it the wrong way the whole time.
Beautiful
That is awesome see you on a month!
Merry Christmas and a happy new year
I got some in the other day, so far, wings for an Adams dry fly. Very easy stuff to work with. Will be buying a lot more of it. This is going to become my new favorite wing material, next to Snowshoe Rabbit Foot.
Thanks. Great information.
Nice ty and what colors does it come in
Nice tie.
It’s amazing how many double-haul tutorials on RUclips that forget to mention these details
Thank you.
Thank you, that was a very good teaching videeo. I especially found the explantion of where to apply the haul in the casting stroke very helpful to keep in mind. May I ask you what rod and the line wieght you used for this demonstration. My guess is it's a Sage 5 wieght.
Hi Ed, sorry for the delay in getting back to you. It was a few years ago so I think it was probably a Sage Z-Axis. Today is would be a Sage "X". I like a fairly fast rod for double haul because when you need to use that technique, you're usually throwing big flies, dealing with wind, or requiring distance and a faster rod will help keep the line in the air and maintain line speed. The line might have been a RIO Rio Grande WF5, today it might be that same line or a RIO Perception and either line would have been cleaned and conditioned with Russ Peak Line Cleaner which puts a slippery coating on the line and helps it perform well. Thanks for watching.
The video was done a few years ago. I've always used Sage rods and at that time it might have been an XP. Today it would be an Igniter. I like a faster rod to help with line speed and a strong rod to help with keeping the line in the air.
@@TheBecksPhotography Thank you for answering my Questions.
Yeah, count me in too!
Joe, I'll send you some samples! Thanks for watching.
Well, I will buy some as soon as you have it in stock!
Hi George, we have poly fluff in stock. If you'll send me your address I'll send some samples. Email me at cathy@barryandcathybeck.com. Thanks for watching.
Best ever demonstration
Great explanation!
Thank you.

New in fly fishing, very helpful tip !!
I think it's a wonderful instructional video. Neverthless, I think that the rule of hauling at the end of the cast is true for a faster action rod (like her rod, you can see by the bend of it). You'll have your translational movement and then rotational movement. The haul generally coincides with the rotation, or power snap as Joan Wulff calls it. If it's a fast rod, you rotate at the end of the stroke. However, with a slower rod, you must start rotating earlier in the stroke, or you'll shock the rod with the sudden rotation at the end and you get a tailing loop. So rotation must start earlier and be progressive, and the haul starts earlier with that rotation. So fast rod, haul and rotate at the end. Slower rod, both rotation and haul are earlier and more progressive. This is taught by Steve Rajeff.
Thank you Eric for taking the time to comment. This may be so, but when I am hauling it is usually to handle wind, turn over big flies on heavier lines, or to make a longer-than-usual cast and I am not ever using a soft rod in these situations -- as noted. I am after line speed and that requires a faster rod and a more compressed, condensed haul which puts the punch where you want it, need it.
I have been watching all the other "professionals" to learn the double haul, this without doubt is the best.
Thank you, Mike. Please let me know if you have any questions. Cathy
Eventually I will get this but it might take ten or twelve years practicing every day for eight hours.
Buck Appel It is best taken in small doses often. 15 minutes every other day. Good luck. You can do this!
Buck, it will come easier if you practice 15 minutes a day, 3 days a week. It's best learned in small doses. Cathy
Barry & Cathy Beck thank You!
Terrible videography
Cathy, your video is one of the very best instructional video for a double haul. The explanation of the timing is clear and explicit. Well done and thanks
Thank you!
Thank you.
Just watched this video, lots of good info for this novice. Cathy, what I am having problem with is tying on my fly. My hands shake a little and at 68 I still have good eyesight but I find it difficult to see the line or the fly hole. I have magnifying glasses that helps a bunch. But I find myself not wanting to change fly because it takes me from 4 to 5 minutes to do what used to take me about a minute. Any tips on making this easier for me. I have even thought about making up 10 or 15 leaders with different flies on them. Then use a loop on the fly line and loop on the leader to make a quick and easy change ... even thought about using a small open loop metal connecter from the fly line to easily swap out my premade leaders.... any suggestions would be appreciatted. I am trying hard to become a good fly fisherman and usually fish from 3 to 5 times a week. I am becoming a much better caster but thats just a small part of the equation. Thanks and I subbed.
Your casting looks so smooth and graceful.
It should be, Mike. It's not about power or muscle. It's about using the rod.
Thank you, Mike.
Looks beautiful there
Mike, check out our website: barryandcathybeck.com. Maybe you can come to Pennsylvania and fish Fishing Creek sometime.
Nice video, casting starting to make more sense with you explaining it.
I have problem letting line out on the back cast on double haul any suggestions that might help me
Mike, the "flick" or "speed up and stop" or "power snap", whatever you want to call it is as important on the back cast as it is on the forward cast, so make sure you have it. Bring the rod a little more to the side instead of too vertical and you can watch the flick and see the rod load (or bend) better. Let the line slide out of your line hand as you flick the rod tip at the end of the back cast. It should go. Make sure the line is clean. I recommend any good line dressing, RIO, Orvis, SciAngler, or Russ Peak. It puts a hard slippery finish on the line and makes it shoot better, float higher, and last longer. If you want to share an address, I will send you some. Hope this helps. Cathy Beck
Mike King it will go out to you today or tomorrow. Thanks again for watching.
@@TheBecksPhotography Thank you so much!
Thank you!
Very well done, one of the best explained on the Double Haul, Thanks
James Cullins thank you.
Unfortunately filled with erroneous understanding of rod dynamics during the casting stroke and demonstration doesn’t match explanation.
