Dual Main Rope Rescue Systems, Twin Tensioned Rope Systems (TTRS), DCTTRS, SMSB Overview
TTRS are the hottest trend this decade in technical rope rescue, but what is a TTRS? In this video, I break down a variety of common rope rescue systems like "dedicated main, dedicated belay", "single main, separate belay", dual main systems, twin tensioned rope systems, dual capability two tensioned rope systems, and mirrored systems.

Component-based High Angle Rope Systems for lightweight technical rescue: Where to put the prusik?
Просмотров 5593 месяца назад
Don't feel like hauling an MPD and 11m ropes on your back for mountain rescue? Then you're probably thinking about component based systems. But just throwing a few devices together does not create a safe rescue belay. Here are some design considerations for improvised lightweight rescue systems. Good overview of the British Columbia Council for Technical Rescue (BCCTR) standards including the B...

How to Deep Clean and Season a Cast Iron Pan - Griswold Plett Pan No 34 Light Rust Removal
Просмотров 63Год назад
I was gifted this beautiful Griswold No. 34 Plett pan a few weeks ago. It was dusty and dirty from storage with light surface rust and a few spots of heavier rust. I used vinegar, Barkeeper's friend, dish soap and water and a scotch scrubbing pad to clean it up, then seasoned on the stovetop with multiple coats of coconut oil. See how it comes out! Now we just need to find a good aebelskiver re...
Paragliding Costa Rica! Fly with me on my beginner's P2 Course in Dominical!

Learning to fly in Costa Rica! In March, 2023 I took an USHPA P2 novice paraglider pilot's course in Dominical, Costa Rica with Zion Paragliding. Here's how it went! #paragliding #costarica #dominical
Very good
Thanks! I've been out working for the last couple weeks but will put out a few more videos this fall/winter.
The valdotain tresse look similar to a hitch used in the 70s-80s called a Dog and Tail.
Interesting! I never heard of that. Will do some homework. Thanks.
Great understandable delivery of information. Thank you Phil, looking forward to the next ones.
Thanks! I'll have more queued up once fire season ends.
Wonderful video, I'm glad I found this. Love the citations!
Thanks. I have a pretty solid personal background in technical rope rescue but stand on the shoulders of giants. I think that all too often people just do what they were taught without thinking critically about it, or seeking research to back that up. Hence trying to cite research and/or other opinions to back up my lectures.
Hello Philip, excellent and clear delivery. Does a sewn prusik retain all its value as opposed to a tied prusik? Or has it been shown that a tied prusik either maintains its full value or is diminished in its overall strength? Thank you for your great videos. Look forward to more.
Offhand, I can't cite testing on sewn versus tied prusik loop strength. But practically speaking, strength is not the issue. Any properly tied friction hitch will slip far before the cord fails. Personally I think the shift towards sewn over tied prusiks is about quality control, consistency, and bulk. It takes one more potential failure point out of our systems, which improves general safety. I've performed lots of rescues using tied prusiks and haven't had any bad outcomes. But sewn loops from a reputable manufacturer eliminate the potential for a loop failure due to an incorrectly tied or loosened joining knot.
What a great trip. Congratulations on doing so well through your course. Thanks for posting.
Way cool! Is it like skydiving, where you have to fly every 6 months or so to maintain the certification?
Not exactly. The US Hang-gliding and Paragliding Association recognizes five rating levels and there is no maintenance requirement once the rating is achieved. I can't speak to how other international organizations handle qualifications but I believe there are significant differences. More info: www.ushpa.org/page/ratings-and-skills-introduction
I imagine as you soar through the sky, feeling an exhilarating rush of adrenaline and freedom with the warm sun and the wind rushing by, gliding effortlessly over the lush green forests and sparkling blue waters of Costa Rica. The world must seem to stretch out endlessly, and the awe and wonder of the stunning beauty of nature. The peaceful silence only broken by the sound of your own pounding heartbeat and the occasional call of a bird or monkey in the distance. What an unforgettable experience and a breathtaking spectacle. Congrats! You’re an inspiration. 🪂
You pretty much nailed it, Chris. It is magical. Following the king vultures, howler monkeys bellowing in the jungle below. And the couple of XC flights I made were particularly special, cresting a sub-ridge and flying into a valley I've never seen before. And flying is like three-dimensional sailing, trying to see air moving in all directions. It's really special.
