Being Pure in Heart | Paul Gyodo Agostinelli Sensei
In this talk during retreat, Gyodo Sensei explores the spiritual theme of poverty through the koan “Seizei, a Poor Monk" and Maezumi Roshi’s chapter "Pure in Heart" from Appreciate Your Life. We carry around so much, all day, every day. Habits, opinions, ideas desires, plans, ambitions. We also carry around our self-centeredness. What happens when we let these go? This is being pure in heart. Throw yourself in to service for others, without holding on to anything. Can we see the richness of being poor in this way?

Anger, Fear, Pain, and Frustration Are The Way | Paul Gyodo Agostinelli Sensei
Просмотров 1034 часа назад
In Zen practice, we study our reactivity to things, the extra reactions we put on top of uncomfortable feelings. In this way, the uncomfortable feelings become the most powerful gateway for practice. In this talk, Gyodo Sensei shares Maezumi Roshi’s reflections on the Buddha's Eight Awarenesses of the Enlightened Person to explore how to work with these feelings. Most importantly, to see that u...
Appreciate Your Life Just As It Is | Geoff Shōun O'Keeffe
Просмотров 41421 час назад
Our theme for this year’s Ango practice period is “Appreciate Your Life as the Awakened Life.” Our practice, indeed, is this very life. We have everything we need, right here, right now. We work with what we have, and we wake up to it. Zen Master Dogen Zenji said, “Do not travel to other dusty lands forsaking your own sitting place. If you cannot find the truth where you are, you will never fin...

Appreciating Your Life as the Subtle Mind of Nirvana | Gyodo Sensei

True appreciation is a deep and intimate practice. It requires a quality of attention and acceptance which may be difficult at first. In this talk, Gyodo Sensei offers some steps to deepen into full open-hearted appreciation. To experience the gift and blessing of life even with all its pain and heartbreak. We’re told by the dharma that our life is the life of the Buddha. Can we really see that...
Being Satisfied | Paul Gyodo Agostinelli Sensei
Просмотров 81Месяц назад
Dukkha, often translated as “suffering," is more precisely translated as insufficiency, or dissatisfaction. The Buddha taught that this is the root of our dis-ease. The Buddha also taught that there is One - our Buddha Nature who is completely satisfied. Can we be completely satisfied even when we have a desire or aspiration for something? What gets in the way of you being satisfied?

The second chapter from Maezumi Roshi’s “Appreciate Your Life" focuses on the fundamentals of the practice of zazen (sitting meditation). While it may seem largely practical, these basic instructions are the whole of Zen practice and point to something much deeper. The specificity of our zazen posture connects us to our life in the most intimate way. As Maezumi says, “Everything is here right n...
Entering the Walled Garden | Paul Gyodo Agostinelli Sensei
Просмотров 25Месяц назад
Gyodo Sensei offers encouragement as we enter our Fall Ango Practice Period, which we might think of as a “walled garden.” We are all guardians and tenders of this garden. How do we do this? By taking good care of our lives and nurturing our practice. What a precious opportunity and privilege it is to practice and study the Dharma. When we relate to everything with sincere reverence, it brings ...

The Walled Garden: Fall Ango Practice Period | Paul Gyodo Agostinelli Sensei
Просмотров 65Месяц назад
In this talk, Gyodo Sensei gives an overview of the tradition and theme for our Fall Ango intensive practice period, and shares about Eon Zen's Ango programs. Ango, which translates as "peaceful dwelling,” has been a traditional 90-day practice period in Zen for centuries. The Ango tradition dates to the times of monsoon season in India, when the community could not travel and so hunkered down,...
Arriving at our Terminal Station | Geoff Shōun O'Keeffe
Просмотров 322 месяца назад
Dainin Katagiri Roshi wrote that “when you touch this basic nature of life, you feel relief. This is your final abode, your terminal station… a new life opens up, everywhere, in all directions.” As the Heart Sutra says “No hindrance in the mind, no hindrance, therefore no fear.” What would it be like to feel this kind of boundlessness and fearlessness? Is my life not open in all directions alre...
The Attitude of Continuous Practice | Paul Gyodo Agostinelli Sensei
Просмотров 363 месяца назад
There are many different attitudes or orientations that we might hold toward our life. In Buddhist practice, we see that the human condition creates a basic self-centered attitude which is unsatisfactory and causes suffering - this is the first noble truth. With continuous practice, or "Gyoji," as described by Master Dogen, there is a shift in the basic attitude towards our life. Norman Fischer...
The Great Heart Way: Working with Strong Feelings | Paul Gyodo Agostinelli Sensei
Просмотров 523 месяца назад
How do we work with challenging feelings when they arise sadness, fear, anger, guilt and shame? It is common to want to avoid or push these feelings away. However, when we don’t identify with them, strong feelings are often a powerful doorway to non-dual consciousness. In this talk, Gyodo Sensei shares ways to work with these feelings in our Zen practice, including The Great Heart Way practice ...
Living by Vow | Geoff Shoun O'Keeffe
Просмотров 233 месяца назад
In the White Plum Zen lineage, we receive the sixteen Bodhisattva Vows when we formally commit to the Zen path in a Jukai ceremony. But making the intention to live by vows is available to all of us. They are practical, dynamic and applied differently in different circumstances. They are alive for us, all the time. Living by vow is lifelong. We never finish. We never once and for all “conquer” ...
Weeding the Weeds of Our Life | Paul Gyodo Agostinelli Sensei
Просмотров 463 месяца назад
Gyodo Sensei share reflections on the practice of weeding at our July retreat. As any gardener knows, weeds seem to continuously proliferate and we must take care of them or they will take over. What are the weeds of our life - the weeds on the inside? Our attachments - craving, aversion, ignorance - protective habits that produce suffering. When we take care of these weeds, we get to the root ...

Walk as if Your Feet are Kissing the Earth | Geoff Shoun O'Keeffe
Good advice! We can also say that the cause of suffering, is not appreciating your life as the awakened life, and judging yourself and your life to be unawakened, unsuccessful, not good enough, not acceptable, failed and miserable, which is a very hard habit to break.
Thank you. Bowing. May all beings share the moment. From Madison, WI. Okay
I suppose that was how I came by my own state of mindfulness. I was faced with a situation (albeit a bizarre one) that I could not escape that was so harrowing that if I didn't learn to manage the sheer existential dread it would have broken me. And although I lost that state of mindfulness as the existential dread faded and I fell into a sort of denial, I found that the mindful state I was in made me a better person so I came back to it.
great talk
Thank you Geoff, this talk makes me want to read all of her books again.
Thank you for the apt review and the practical application of Nancy Baker's book through your personal life stories. I so appreciate your honest and deep sharing in this very public platform. I'm reminded how "intimate" Not Knowing truly is. Because of your sharing, I'm inclined to check out Nancy's book, "Opening to Oneness." I also recommend "Freedom Wherever We Go," by Thich Nhat Hanh. It was on my recommended reading list for the Spiritual Formation class I taught.
!!!!!!!!!
Wow, Sigman I loved listening to you, especially after not hearing your voice for so many years. I share some of your experiences as an adjunct instructor at the Community College of Vermont for over 30 years. I also struggle with the anger and resentment I sometimes feel towards the college. I know that adjuncts all over the country struggle with their 2nd/3rd class status and treatment. I'd love to talk with you about it sometime.
Very inspiring, thank you!
Shishin Wick was the head of the White Plum Sangha, and the man who, a few years ago publicly promised to support those hurt and impacted by the abuses of Dennis Merzel, who calls himself Genpo Roshi and was his predecessor as head of the Sangha, before being forced to step down when his abuses were exposed. In private however, in emails that have now been released, Wick made clear to actual students of Merzel's that he wasn't prepared to actually support anyone and that it was all just PR. Shameful and disgusting.
Good to hear this. So sad though that Zen Peacemakers have become such a grift, serving mostly the older, white and wealthy in recent years. Most on any rez, wouldn't be able to afford to do any of the events that ZP do.

Thank you, I really enjoyed your video. Subscribed.
Perhaps you could contact Larry Jissan Christensen who was MaEzumi Roshi's Jisha and then became a Dharma successor of Joko Beck....
