    Was loving the video up until part 3! I agree with the initial sentiment of being just fucking frustrated with people focusing on unimportant aspects of the game itself. I'm so happy you articulated everything that has gone unsaid for so long!! Going to go play the Hex and then come back.

    2:54 this hit me more cause if you actually decided to choose leshy to replace in the act before he has more dialogue about that. about how you thought of him even at the very end. about how he would have been proud to have dueled you properly in that battle. I just wanted to reach into the screen and hug him at that.

    I watched up to the part where you talked about the hex, stopped the video, and went to go play the game. It's got really good themes and decent story, but plays poorly and looks terrible. Which I cannot decide if that's on purpose or not. Edit to add: The reason it took so long for me to play The Hex was because of its visual style; the description wasn't real encouraging for a game that looked as it did, either.

    28:30 i appreciate the critique of risk of rain 2 and its publishing making the game much iffy-er in terms of polish, but i think the lore is the wrong thing to focus on in regards to that point. the lore of the game gives glimpses of a greater story of the world of the series, but ultimately its not necessary for the core enjoyment of the game and so, the devs prioritized it less. theres other things that are a lot more important to the game’s core gameplay and identity that could just as easily be criticized (especially the console ports, which were handled only by gearbox, it is INSANE the barely-playable state its updates were shipped in), i just dont think focusing on the lore specifically does your point justice.

    I realised this video has stupidly become sort of a comfort for me. Without getting overly sappy and emotional on the internet, since it just feels like screaming into a void, I rewatch it and replay it whenever I need something comfy to listen to in the background and sometimes even the foreground. The visuals, the audio, the narrator's voice, everything is super cosy- and the interview section especially made me reconsider a lot of what I spending my time on and I knew it needed to change. People echoing the same things I'm feeling and the bit about your personality becoming your job and vise versa making me scared shitless. But in all this I just wanted to say thank you! This video has changed the trajectory of me for hopefully the better.

    it honestly feels like the message halfway through this video is “white people = bad” which is an awful stance to take. Yeah, just because white guys made some good games doesn’t mean that they didn’t deserve the success. A lot of those games you mentioned are really good. I just don’t understand why this became a race issue, games aren’t made by skin color, they’re made by incredibly talented minds, which come in all kinds of bodies, and these guys were the ones to take action on it. If anyone has a counter argument to this, please talk to me. I’ll genuinely listen, i’m not trying to rage bait.

    32:15 I get pissed when Jeremy Crawford tells me to just homebrew mechanics for 5e D&D. I can't imagine the incandescent rage I would feel if an alleged professor told me to "just figure out" something that was integral to my success in their course and didn't have an explicit prerequisite. That's a fundamental failure of your academic program, and teachers should be as upset about that as students if they have any pride in their tradecraft.

    So much of what you and your friends said during the Hex: Interview chapter resonated with me so hard. I've been in the industry since 2015, really since 2011 but that was my college days and I barely count that. I've done so many crunch periods, so many hard pushes that weren't necessary, all due to production not listening to our limits and trying to meet some arbitrary goals. The idea of a 'sprint' I think has overtaken the games industry in a very bad way. The pursuit of efficiency has killed so many careers. I'm really happy that at least in the jobs I've had lately, it seems like there's an effort to push back against this and give people balance. I consider myself luck that I'm not so burned out that I'm still in the industry. I'm about to hit that 10 year mark that most game devs decide to leave the industry forever for all manner of reasons. I hope that things continue to get better, I want those coming after me to have a better and happier time. Thanks for doing this video. I loved playing this game but I never really put that much thought about it in the way you analyzed it. Great work.

    You mentioned Devolver for a bit as a publisher and how it kinda goes against Indie as a concept but so far theh havent truly screwed it up yet. I would like to hear more on your thoughts about this. So far, this entire vid is really good. (also, i never got to play the Hex before i played Inscryption because i played the concept game from the Jam and just had to have it. Very much a life changer it was.) Edit: The Kaycee's mod is more story building as a side thing but just a way to play the game on its own as well. IDK if that means its "losing its meaning" but I don't think there's anything entirely wrong with it.

    Hey I just got here, way too late to the party so I don't expect this comment to get read, BUT At the start of the video, I was amazed by your voice. Because it's pretty close to what I want for myself at least, it passes as any gender and I just really wanted to compliment it. Then you made the casual comment of being trans, and. Yeah, I was a bit slow on that one. You have an amazing voice and I really hope your days are good a-month-and-a-bit from the release of this video! Edit: What is this? The Hex appreciation on MY video about the metanarrative of Inscryption and the creation of games coupled a SUPER LESBIAN ANIMAL RPG MENTION????. More likely than you'd think

  • @Jetsetlemming
    @Jetsetlemming 2 месяца назад

    One more assumption we're making about Yume Nikki that I rarely see anyone question: Is she actually refusing to leave her room, or is she shaking her head because the door won't open? Maybe it's a Silent Hill 4 type thing. After playing through it the first time, my interpretation was that even her bedroom and that balcony is part of the dream, and she jumps to wake herself up. Also based on the reasons why you like the game in this video I'd recommend the game The Void to you. It's from Icepick Lodge (the same obscure Russian arthouse game devs as Pathologic) and is about playing as a lost soul in a kind of afterlife who seems to be trans or nonbinary in some way (gender is a HUGE theme, all the NPCs are divided into Brothers and Sisters and they frequently argue about which group you should belong in if any) and you have to collect colors, grow color plants, and satisfy strange women and their requests of you in order to keep from being thrown deeper into the abyss. It's an absolutely GORGEOUS game, both visually and musically, and is similarly very hard to get a definitive read on (especially since most gamers don't seem to notice the gender theming despite them slapping you in the face with it). Definitely recommend looking up the "easy mode" mod on the steam forums if you try it, its default difficulty balance is uh. Russian. lol.

    • @Jetsetlemming
      @Jetsetlemming 2 месяца назад

      (I can only assume the vanilla difficulty is meant to simulate the realistic difficulty of being a trans person stuck in Gender Hell)

    I just don't think coming back to a game you enjoy over and over again is that bad of a thing.. especially when you start modding that game to turn into something else. I don't think that's a thing that should be looked down upon as being inherently lesser. Mods like Mental Omega for red alert 2 or Calamity for Terraria complete change their respective games into something else. I dont think that's something bad or lesser than just letting it be. The real issue comes when you try to hold on to that feeling long past it's death. As long as you genuinely enjoy the game, there's no issue with coming back to it. It's only when you keep coming back to it to recapture some long forgot to enjoy that just never seems to come back again that it becomes an issue. Enjoy them in the moment. Dont arbitrarily extend them or cut them short

    *complains about people ignoring the story of a game because of the lore throughout video* 28:39 *complains about lore missing from a game as if it was the story of the game* (the story of the game is very simple but it was in the game from the start and all that was missing was flavour text from items.)

    Universities do not exactly have the most competitive salary to get the top developers in-class, so having that is not exactly realistic. I assume that the network is elsewhere, like in entreprenerial and industrial places. Also also, deadlines in research and game development alike are not well understood, which is reflected by crunch culture. This was most apparent to me as an European when interacting with an American research group, for which setting deadlines way too tight and ignoring innovative buffer in the planning phase was the norm. Of course we got more time to finish the project, but it needlessly increases tension in the chain.

    I flunked out of a game design program because for the love of God THEY DIDNT TEACH US HOW TO DO ANYTHING! They expected me to figure out how to do several things on my own. Like how to program movement and how to make a model. I eventually graduated the same school with a certificate in media communications just to wipe away some of my debt and that course was taught so much better

      @@obitosenju3768 what I meant to convey is that I don't think it's good to disappoint your players for the sake of a metaphor in your story. I liked the game less at the end, and didn't really pay attention to the moments that should have hit hard emotionally. That's not a good thing no matter how integral it supposedly was to the story of the point the story was making.
