    Greetings from Canada and thank you for this awesome channel! Could you please make a thorough video about short naps during the day? My baby (in his separation anxiety stage, 8 months of age) would nap for 30 minutes sharp, then wake up and if I am not right there by his side, he won't settle down to extend the nap. Meaningless to say, he will be cranky and needy because of the short nap and all the schedule will go out the window 😅 I don't like the cry it out method - it's hard for both mom and baby. What I came up with, for now, is put a timer for 25 minutes and then go to baby's room and be there, like I've never left the room... It works, but I'd like him to be able to go back to sleep by himself! 😊

    At times it's not possible for me to understand what my toddler is "whining" about. There will be sudden loud shrieks that don't stop until some very specific need is met. I really do need her to use her words and tell me what she needs, or what is the matter, otherwise I cannot help. When we explain that we don't understand and that she needs to use the words that she has (and we'll start offering suggestions: e.g. up, cup, milk, eat, outside, bike ride, book, etc...), usually she does come up with something that she wants. If possible and appropriate, I can then get or do that thing for her. If we did not ask her to "use her words" she really would continue to scream thinking that we ought to be able to read her mind. So "use your words" is one of those house mantras that help her to learn before resorting to screams, we would like her to try "talking" to tell mama and dada what she needs so that we can help. When it's a tantrum though, distract, comfort, and move on is the right answer. As you say, toddlers can't explain, "I'm angry because you told me I can't go outside right now. I know you said I could go later, but I just don't want to wait that long and I don't understand why I can't go out now."

    • @teethingtotantrums

      @aoiahiru670 It sounds like you're very aware of your little one's response to big emotions and are working hard to give her age-appropriate ways to express those needs and emotions. Keep up the amazing work, she will get there in the end!

    • @teethingtotantrums
      @teethingtotantrums Месяц назад

      Hi @forster93, no you should not leave them even if they're in a safe room. Your child can still hold their breath, pass out, hit their head, panic or do something else to hurt themselves. You must stay in the room with your child. Sit down on the floor next to them, read a magazine or a book, don’t make eye contact, be very still, don’t talk, don’t engage. Wait for the storm to pass. Try not to react. Let the energy diffuse from the situation.

    • @myishakane6927
      @myishakane6927 27 дней назад

      I have found that what helps with meltdowns is quiet, privacy and love. If the situations is too much, removing them from the situation and reconnecting is best. Nursing is great if you can. Whatever makes them feel calm and safe.

    • @teethingtotantrums
      @teethingtotantrums 27 дней назад

      @@myishakane6927 I couldn't agree more. The big emotions from a meltdown are not triggered by a desire to achieve a goal but as a reaction to an overwhelming feeling or stimulus. Love, comfort and safety are paramount when managing a meltdown.

  • @leannestrong1000
    @leannestrong1000 6 месяцев назад

    The thing to remember is that sometimes, no matter how hard you try, your child may still have a hard time adjusting. Your child might say things like, "my family/household is my parents/guardians, and me!" "You had/adopted/took in my (sibling, cousin, friend, foster sibling, etc.) just to show me how much you didn't love me! Didn't you?!" "When I grow up, I'm only going to have one kid!" As a parent, it might be tempting to get all upset, or say something like, "what about your (sibling, cousin, friend, foster sibling, etc.)?" "No, we had/adopted/took in your (sibling, cousin, friend, foster sibling, etc.) because we have enough love for both of you." "What if your partner wants two kids?" Instead, try to think of it like this. You will notice that I often use this analogy, and that's only because this seems like an analogy that most adults can relate to. Imagine if when you first started at your new job, it was only you and your boss. And then, a few months to several years later, along came a new coworker. Imagine if your boss decided that everything and everyone had to be centered around your new coworker, and their breaks, clock-in times, clock-out times, sick days, etc. Imagine if your boss, who would sometimes tell you things like, "I'll help you in a minute, I'm busy with this," always seemed ready to pause whatever they were doing any time your new coworker indicated that they needed help. Imagine if your boss was constantly telling you things like, "you have to be quiet right now, because your new coworker is on their break," or, "I'm helping your new coworker with this right now, but I'll help you when I'm done," but never told your new coworker the same. Imagine if your boss decided that all work-related activities now had to be something the new coworker could join you guys in, and seemed to completely disregard the fact that you felt like you were long past that stage. Imagine if your boss told you that you were now expected to go to certain areas of the workplace to use certain items (or worse, you weren't allowed to have said items in the workplace AT ALL), because "they might harm your new coworker." The only difference is that, as an adult, you most likely have grasped the concept of sharing and taking turns, and the importance of doing so, and you are most likely past the hormonal, highly emotional, hypersensitive stages known as puberty and adolescence (or the preteen and teen years), so getting used to sharing your boss with a new coworker might not be as big of a deal. Now imagine this from the perspective of a toddler or young child, who really hasn't mastered the art of sharing OR taking turns, now having to get used to sharing AND taking turns with parental/guardian attention. Or the perspective of a pubescent or adolescent, who is experiencing a surge of hormones and emotions, and needs their parents'/guardians' emotional support now more than ever, now having to get used to not having it readily available.

      @@helenrwilkinson It's lovely to hear from you! I'm sure your little one will love playing in their special kitchen cupboard! With regard to making your home toddler friendly, here are a few ideas: - Book shelves at toddler height - Easily accessible toys storage that's also easy to tidy away - Baby gates so your toddler can play in an area without worrying about them going somewhere they shouldn't - Invest in some mini sized every day objects such as cleaning equipment and gardening tools so they can help out with chores - Have a small table and chairs for snacks and activities - Remove most of the precious/breakable objects that you don’t want your little one to touch so you don’t have to keep saying no. You can reintroduce these objects as they get older and learn not to touch/be sensible around the items. - Invest in a small set of steps for them to stand on so they can help cook dinner etc. - Coat hooks at child level - Child proof locks on toilet lids , cupboards and drawers - Have at least one room / corner of the home that is totally toddler friendly where they can play freely and safely with soft furnishings, cushions, books and games etc
