My grandfather was held here during the War and drank himself to death in the years after his release from this hell hole. I can't begin to understand what he experienced here, but the haunting and disturbing aspects of this music bring part of it to life for me. My son will visit this memorial site tomorrow and bear witness not to the horrors but to our family's overcoming.

As his previous compositions Pastoral Symphony and Testament, it is inspired in [by] Ludwig van Beethoven, specifically in his stay in a farmhouse in Gneixendorf late in his life, where he revised his Symphony No. 9 and completed his String Quartet No. 16.

This piece is crazy and incredible!

Intoxicating, gorgeous. Especially those more chorale-like phrases. Delicious. The references to Debussy come through brilliantly. I'd quite enjoy performing the two pieces side by side. Kudos to the pianist, too. This writing can be quite difficult in the small scale voicing of individual chords, but also in the large scale when it comes to an overall coherent performance.

Cette pièce renferme les 3 clichés principaux de la musique contemporaine pour piano qu'on peut entendre sur presque tous les continents depuis des décennies. A savoir l'abstraction, encore de l'abstraction et toujours de l'abstraction. François-Frédéric Guy, excellent pianiste au demeurant, a beau fanfaronner ici et là que Tristan Murail est un génie, que son écriture pour piano est ceci ou cela, ou autre bla bla, la réalité demeure obstinée; il ne s'agit là que de bons procédés entre un compositeur un brin officiel et un interprète qui ne l'est pas beaucoup moins. Chacun se passe délicieusement la pommade, en empochant les subventions qui donnent à l'un comme à l'autre l'impression très illusoire de participer à quelque événement musical important. Du reste c'est aussi cette mafia musicale, essentiellement politique à défaut d'être créatrice, qui pousse la plupart des compositeurs sans talent à noircir leur papier à musique en y apposant avec gourmandise un énième numéro d'opus composé à la va vite, et les éditeurs les plus en vue à les publier illico comme étant le nec le plus ultra du moment. Non, non et non messieurs et mesdames, cette musique n'est pas du "Debussy d'aujourd'hui" comme on peut parfois le lire. De grâce nettoyons nos oreilles et éduquons nous un peu avant de dire ces très embarrassantes âneries. Debussy a inventé un monde sonore inouï, une forme d'expression ultra novatrice mais qui garde un lien avant le passé! C'est là où réside sa force, lui comme de nombreux génies de la même époque en France. Aujourd'hui, et en réalité depuis déjà un moment, les compositeurs qui n'ont strictement rien à dire se pavanent soit dans un bavardage inconséquent et stérile, soit en s'enfermant dans un minimalisme extrême. Le drame est que dans l'un comme dans l'autre cas ces "discours" reflètent une profonde fainéantise d'écriture. Je parle d'une absence quasi totale d'un discours harmonique, d'une construction réellement lisible et variée. A la place de cela des sonorités et des effets instrumentaux à n'en plus finir, où le début, le milieu comme la fin ne sont qu'une seule et même morne litanie interchangeable. Certes c'est sévère comme jugement, mais ce jugement correspond à la réalité et les principaux acteurs de cela le savent parfaitement. Un compositeur peut ne pas avoir de talent et être propulsé dans les cactus des récompenses pour bien d'autres raisons que des raisons artistiques. Mais il n'est pas dupe. Parfois, parvenir à décrocher des prix et des commandes en se sachant pourtant médiocre peut être une formidable revanche sur les beaucoup plus talentueux que soi, mais dont on sait aussi que ces derniers resteront pour beaucoup dans l'obscurité. Passons.....

New Murail! Wow!!

This work is so magical. Love the strange beginning (the drum beat, I’m dying 😅💙) and the finishing contemplative eclecticism. Beautiful instrumental and electronic textures which may seem an off-putting and jarring business but with the right amount of humor that makes ya think it’ll be alright in the end. Such an original voice Ayers is a huge influence for me.

Nice performance. This piece has been composed in tribute to Messiaen's "quatuor pour la fin du temps".
