You can't have two of these within 500 feet of each other. The front end desense is horrible.
6:40 I don't know about others' opinions, mine is the best way to adjust the volume level is to push the squelch button and hear the white noise. So walkie talkie doesn't need any volume indicator.
Man I love aprs so I hope they continue with this radio....use wires too ..they are crazy if they discontinue this line of radio..n0amy
I've only had my ftm-500 for a week now, just got on wires-x. Very cool!
Why would you test GMRS on channel 10, which has a maximum allowable power output of .5 watts? You should test it on 15 - 22 with a permissible power output of 50w.
Good point. I only chose it at random. Low, med,or high power output doesn't change though regardless of permissable limits. Thanks for watching
decent review
The end.....reminds me of Dr. EVIL
Boowahahahahahah!
On the spurious emission topic, he said there is a ham radio version and a GMRS version. As a newbie who hasn't purchased a radio yet, this confused me when I saw the different radios on Amazon. It's an either/or proposition?
I'd probably get the ham version even if you were only gonna use GMRS. Then just switch it to GMRS mode so you don't accidentally transmit out of band> if you will be using the ham bands run it in ham mode. As a newbie, you'll make less mistakes that way (accidentally xmits on like EMS freqs) JMO
@higginsreport thank you. So the ham version can still use GMRS but the GMRS version can't do Ham. Why are they the same price and why would someone want the GMRS only version?
@@Sifo_Dyas both versions can be unlocked, or put in either ham/gmrs modes. There may or may not be tighter quality control on the ham version?
Dude you ROCK! Thank you for a HILARIOUSLY funny and accurate video! You are SPOT ON!
I also have an SDS200 living in Illinois wondering what antenna you are using
I have a wideband discone mounted in my attic. I don't recall the exact model, I've had it for so long. Works great and I don't worry about leaving hooked up all the time since it's not outside (lightning).
@higginsreport ok thanks I bought a magnetic mount desk top discone all band but it's not any better then the antenna that came with the scanner
@@midwestguy3361 mine is similar to this www.hamradio.com/detail.cfm?pid=H0-011096
How did you program the UV -17
ruclips.net/video/ic16KDXV5Ko/видео.html
I ordered the 17R on Amazon with the programming cable and improved antenna. I used CHIRP-NEXT and selected UV-17Rplus. This allowed me to manually program my local airports and GMRS (for those with a GMRS license)
Did yours come with a second antenna for 1.25m? Thanks.
Mine did not.
All that wind and I'll bet there's not a single wind turbine anywhere around there.
This is probably the best cross mode demo I have seen. Now I don't have to have a dedicated profile for D-Star to DMR. I have a D75 and us the unlink from the Reflector menu. The Individual menu is also a good place to same D-Star reflectors. Thanks for the video.
I bought mine for about 26 bucks. No cradle, but I don't care. Was worried, after I got it, and after listening to people bitch, that it wouldn't work on GMRS. It does. 1-22. Even think it works on MURS. I'm quite pleased with it.
Im surprised nobody with a 3D printer and cad hasnt made a double size capacity pack for this radio! Crazy prices,I think.
Gutes Video 👍
Very good review. Currently, I use my H-3 ( I also have an H-8 ) on GMRS. We have a great repeater system here in Michigan, and I’m able to talk all over the state, with it !!
Almost ready for the Tech exam…..
Just ordered 4 pack, living in Michigan as well but not sure where you are finding all the repeaters though. Not too many in my area.
@@kevinlopota3626 I may be able to point you in the right direction
@@kevinlopota3626 where are you ?
I don't agree with you that that radio a not going to have as good receiver as an Icom, yaesu or Kenwood all handhelds or even a scanner have equal receiver the only thing on expensive Ham radios you mention is the transmitting audio a little bit better I compared it with my yaesu handheld.
I should clarify, that was a general statement referring to SupeHet vs SOC technolgy. My Kenwood D74 has a lower audio output than this radio - depending on the signal being received the TD-H3 may sound as if it is the better receiver or equivalent. However, I would bet strong nearby transmissions will overload the front end of the TD-H3 and degrade the desired signal. I accept this shortcoming from a SOC receiver as somewhat acceptable due to the much lower cost . Just my opinion. Thanks for watching!
I am completely new to radios and HAM in general. Thanks for the no BS review. Can't wait to see what else you have in the library of knowledge.
I have 2 and i need more?-- Yes. Easy to use and cheep..
lol, I just ordered a green one and the "crystal" one...
Who else is here in 2024
Great review,I got the SDS-100e in 2021,It’s a great unit,I just use it for military aircraft frequencies in the UK,I use Sentinel and Radio Reference Uk for my frequencies.
Just became a Tech HAM over the weekend and i do indeed have the DMR Radioddity GD-AT10G and it is awesome as i just had my first contacts with it. I have thousands of ID's in there. There was a local Pennsylvania State Wide NET this evening and this Radio can do it all except VHF, But for the price. It's a great Ham DMR HT. For anyone, like you said, want to go the cheaper way. This little awesome HT is for you. 73's and maybe i can catch you on air one day. -KD3AMB
Congrats on getting your ticket!
@ Thanks so much. 😊
Chirp yet?
Can you explain the allstar connection?
I have an Allstar Node setup at my home QTH. I was crossband repeating in to my allstar node. There are many videos here on youtube that can show you what an allstar node is....too much to describe here in detail. Thx for watching!
stop watch?better make a calculator or telephone number saving as casio telememo databank watch.🫤
if you choose a single channel display, you will get both the channel name and the frequency.
lol..right you are my friend..thanks!
Hi i Can't Find the 444 frequencies etc... i just have 144-146 and 430-439 "
The version I have has wide band receive? It won't transmit out of the north american ham bands. Maybe you have a different region radio?
@@higginsreport yes, I'm in italy
can I jailbreak it?
Great explanation, good graphics, glad you showed all of the equipment involved.
can i trasmit to my uv5r?
Yes if they are on the same freq. I'm not sure about cloning, if that's your question? Maybe someone else could chime in on that....
@@higginsreport i can transmit my uv5r to my uv17r but i can not transmit my uv17r to my uv5r? can u help

I got a used d74 for a good deal will try this soon thanks
Even the cat sounds English when it meowed. 😂. But this is really cool to see just how functional this radio is. I just order mine today.
Bought mine off Amazon for $29.99 and came with a charging cradle. For $30 bucks, you can't beat it. If no one likes it then don't buy it. So many sad hams crying about baofeng but they all seem to buy them too. I was impressed with the tonal quality and volume of the AR-5RM and power output too. Perfect for me.
Big question here from a noob. I have been trying my best to get pmr 446 frequencies to work with this model. But it seems completely locked to what is already programmed on it. Is this programmed firmware wise with an OTP?
Not sure, the version radio I have is fine with those freqs since it's in the US ham band?
Yes it is don’t know of a way to bypass the restriction.
I know some dude made this radio ( Dual band) I love to read about, if is true.
I dont live far from you and i cant get this damn radio to connect to the computer... wanna help a brother?
No baofeng software for Mac OS?
The cat is officially a ham radio operator.
I don’t get how people who claim to love classic rock can hate these guys. Also, the comparisons are getting old. Josh’s voice makes me feel a whole different way than any other singer, ever.
