For me, it does feel like an new subgenre of puzzle. This is due to the choices you can make. For example, when you try to save a character in the game, at first you will likely fail and get one of the death endings. In order to actually save them, you need to work backwards and explore the previous area for things, make almost random choices with them, and interact with strange things. Basically you need to work backwards and make all the right choices in order to get certain effects.
