Well done on your makes. You'll find that unless you use some decreasing or "shaping" stitches you will have a lot of thickness to get through. You wont find any hacks sadly to get the end hole to cinch down. Either use shaping, or work in the round (often looks much nicer too) or rely on the pom pon covering it. You could totally sew the hole in the top shut with another yarn. I don't think you even have to worry about the color matching since it should disappear under a pompom! Last year I made a hat sorta like the first project and I decided to frog it this year because it was so stiff. 😅

I tend to have the opposite problem as you - my first row is always looser than subsequent rows. Since your first row tends to be tighter, you might try using a larger hook for the first row, then switch to the correct hook size for subsequent rows. (Since my problem is the opposite of yours, I do the opposite - I start with a smaller hook and then switch to the correct size.) I’m glad I found your channel. I enjoyed watching your video.
