These Evinrude/Johson motors are so nice to look at, work on, and run. I just wished Evinrude/Johnson would have put a natural clutch, they would have been even greater. Thanks for sharing.

Do you happen to know the dwell angle? If you could spin it with a drill motor you could get the points perfect by setting the dwell.

I have the same engine, have it running great. Now I want to repaint it but can't find the color for the lower unit.

Is this an alternative to using the timing fixture tool you used on your other video? Or do you have to do both methods, using the timing fixture and the way you did it on this video using feeler gauges? If it's either or which method do you prefer?

Hi, I need some help, the points are new, the coils and condensers also new, have continuity between coils and spark plug connectors, did the alignment as you explained (thanks for the video!!) but still only have spark on the lower, not on the top. Switch and spark plugs are also new. Any idea what could be? My engine is a 40hp Johnson 1970 (40ES70A) Thanks in advance

Thanks for this video man. I couldn't afford the tool, but I was able to use the flywheel. It has 2 timing marks on the bottom edge. Just have to take it off and put it on a few times. I appreciate your doing this. It helped me a lot.

It is a good idea to pull your plugs so you don't get the back pressure from the pistons.

Another good tutorial. My daughter and I used my old stove at an antique power show. It had been years since I used it. She was sixteen and had never seen it. It took us a while but we eventually got the soup cooked. Are you still playin with old outboards? My daughter and I take old outboards and her garden tractors to the power show. It’s a good place to hand out info for the AOMCI. Take care, it was good seeing some videos from you again.

thank you bud for ur presentation helped me a lot since i dont know anything about small motors and i had purchased a 1974 evinrude 6 horse a while back kept getting one sparkplug firing while other wasnt ordered what i needed now if someone can post a evinrude small motor parts or can direct me to one so i can look if all parts are there on my motor

Looked everywhere trying to locate one of these outboard motor ignition timing setting fixtures. Anyone know where I can find one?

Good informative older video. And his other ones as well! But note about sanding the points: use a fine grit 300 sandpaper give or take, and just dip a folded piece wet with alcohol and sand like he shows here so the points are CLEAN & DRY. Don’t touch them with fingers or any body oils; it can affect low idle/speed quality. Insures good consistent spark across the gap at all speeds. Not criticizing him here- his vids are great for noobs or anyone because of how he comes across to you in showing & demonstrating tuneups etc. He has a great vid on setting timing with a meter. Copy that and your motor will just sing.

Great video, but you might have pointed out that torqueing the flywheel 40lbs is for a little 3hp. Would be different for larger motors with larger diameter cranks, flywheels and threads. However, that not withstanding, I am obliged that you went to the trouble of making this video available to the masses. It is a very good tutorial.

hello! im working on my 6hp evinrude fisherman from the 60's, im wondering when i have it started and go for a trip then shut it off it wont start back up util its cooled down. i have my guesses that it is the coils that causes this because the protective plastic is broken on them. i have already checked the fuel line, fuel pump and carburetor and they are all fine. to note is that i have also switched sparkplugs and that was the first time it started before i did anything else. it also has bad idleing and shuts it self off after give or take 20 seconds if i dont give it any throttle. also tried the air to fuel mixer but it dosent "seem" to do anything at this moment. Happy for any help! :)

Wow! I've fought my '71 Fisherman many times and could never get the sight lines right in the middle. Now both are set so as it looks like I'm looking down rifle sights with the timing light on it! So much smoother, a lot less smoke, and the idle has never held at such a low rpm. Thanks for this great video! BTW, The point gap now is at about .035. A meaningless measurement for sure.
