Thanks for sharing your journey! I write cli apps in python for doing satellite meteorology, and I have to bundle a hand-rolled python dist as part of the package, as we can't rely on whatever python is installed on a user's computer. Recently a colleague submitted one of our coding tests (binning geographical data) to Chat-Gippety as a lark, and while it returned basically the right answer, there were a couple of edge cases which would cause the solution to blow up. I'd just figured out how to build "Hello World" in Rust, and was amazed how easy it was to make a static binary (I usually do such things using GCC, which is a bit if a crapshoot). I decided to recode the binning problem as a Rust cli app, and use it as a testbed to learn all of the things I would normally do in python (CLI parsing, HDF5/NetCDF4/CSV file input, file tree traversal, numerical array computations etc...). I've also worked through "The Book", and done a good part of the Rustlings, but as there is far more material than you can learn in a reasonable time, it's easy to get overwhelmed. Building a project like my testbed (github.com/gpcureton/grid_test.rs) enabled me to get out of "tutorial hell", and focus my attention on learning what I need to solve my problems, rather than trying to learn the whole language. I figured I can pick up more sophisticated aspects of Rust as I try to solve more complicated problems. For my next "real" project I am going to try and recode one of my python cli apps in Rust, which I can then ship as a single binary, rather than a bunch of scripts and an entire runtime!
