Back to the scene of the crash
I hit Sir Sam's regulary as it's near my families cottage. It's one of only two chair lift bike parks left in Ontario.

I joined some friends from @lanternrouge5249 to check out the Chico Racing 24 hours of summer solstice mountain bike race. It was wet. So wet it was cancelled after just a few hours. I'll hopefully be racing this event next year! #bicycling #cycling #mtb #racing #camping

Adidas Five Ten Hellcat Cycling Shoe Review
nice real world use review
You only need to wipe out once on a patch of ice to make you wish you had put up with the noise and expense of having studs. If you have persistent snow where you live then you are going to encounter ice patches
I made that point in the video. Most cities plow and salt their roads. So it's. It an issue unless you're in a very cold local where they sand the roads and not salt. So you don't have persistent snow and therefore no ice patches.
@@pauldotbike a good friend of mine bike commutes in Ottawa which is a salt city. She was turning a corner on a perfectly cleared concrete pad when she encountered some black ice and fell hard, injuring her should. Black ice is really common and the place you find it is the cleared surfaces. Like I say it only takes one patch to mess you up
I'm sorry for your friend, and I too have slipped on black ice on concrete. That's why I've learned to always ride in a straight line over concrete. Most people do not have winter tires that cycle year round. City bike rental bikes don't have winter tires. These are all used regularly and people don't seem to be dropping left and right throughout the winter. Buying winter specific tires will improve your traction without severely impeding your rolling resistance and they cost less than spiked tires. If you are not comfortable with the chance of slipping on black ice then by all means use spiked tires. I did for a year after slipping on black ice on concrete, so I do understand. But I hated using spiked tires and gave up in favour of the tires I show here. Ironically, spiked tires have worse traction on corners than non-spiked because the medal spikes can get worn quickly when used on pavement and slip easily on clean pavement. If I'm going to be going slower because of my tire choice, I can go slower on these tires and be just as safe. I'm now more careful going around corners, especially over concrete and that seems to have worked for me for many years.
The reasons that the manual bicycle pump is not appreciated more than it is due too that you must use physical effort and because the manual air pump is not the newest and latest technology.
What I love about non electronic bike stuff (pumps, shifting, etc) is that is one less thing I have to worry about charging.
What is the benefit of tubeless vs tube ?
1. Weight. Especially on a fat bike where an inner tube can be a hole pound. 2. Rolling resistance. Lower with tubeless 3. Punctures. Depending on the size and location, a tubeless setup will self seal allowing you to keep riding with ease. 4. Lower tire pressure. You can run lower pressures giving you more traction while still rolling well (see 2). There are cons of course 1. cost. sealant gets expensive when you have to replace it regularly. 2. mess. So much mess. If things go wrong you have sticky sealant everywhere. 3. Yearly maintenance. You have to clean up and replace your sealant ever 6-12 months depending the sealant.
I commute on a 32 inch unicycle and I can ride on the snow but the ice is scary and I've fallen hard enough to be done with that. However I'd like to fit one of my smaller unicycles with some of the best most metal spikes price doesn't even matter tires what would you recommend? I want to have good faith in the tires and that's worth any cost. I'd definitely only need them a few months of the year
Schwalbe make the best winter spiked tires. They have the marathon winter series for roads and the ice spiker for off road. Hopefully they have the size you need in either.
I've had a Lezyne pump unscrew cores. And it's a problem others have reported.
Oh for sure. I've seen many a RUclips video on the problem. But in over 10 years of owning several of their pumps I've never had it happen. So I'm curious is it just dumb luck or something else I'm specifically doing or not doing.
BUG!
Rather looks like a flea market than a proper bicycle fair.
Such a beautiful trail Paul!
Really enjoy the downhill footage, btw!
Ground: Yo, Head! Ready for something fun? I got something great this time... Head: Not sure, man. Remember how it went that one time...? Ground: Nah, that was some other ground, it played you. Helmet: What happened? I wasn't there. Elbows: Yeah, I wonder why. Dude, we got wrecked. Ground: Just bad luck! The trail’s epic! Head: Miss that rush... Legs: We’re tougher now. Yesterday was leg day. Let’s gooooo Head: Alright, let’s do it. Bike: F.
Thanks for the excellent review. As a road rider I think this will suit me perfectly. I just want pockets that keep items separate and this looks like it will do the job. Cheers from Australia.
Wow the bike shows changed so much since the first time I went in 95. Back then there was all kinds of shops manufacturers it's a shame.
It's not big, it's heavy but I love it. The best! 👍
1:03 that's exactly what I was thinking. I paid over $100 for ONE 96North studded tire, ONE damn tire for over $100 and I used it for about a week and took it off because as you said the roads got salted and the studs weren't needed. I used that studded tire on my front and that Continental Contact Plus tire on my rear but found it provided almost no traction in deep snow. I know it's summer now but I'm thinking ahead to next winter and two winters ago when we actually got snow it sucked, no snow last winter because of stupid El Nino. I was running 2.35 inch Schwalbe Smart Sam's and they just weren't very good in snow, especially on those days where I walked out of work and there was 6 inches of unplowed and unshoveled snow on the ground. This coming winter I'm just going with the gnarliest tread I can get and the widest tires I can fit on my bike. For the front wheel I already have a tire, it's a 27.5 x 2.8 inch Michelin WildAM tire made for soft/muddy terrain. Unfortunately, I can't go as wide on my rear so I'm probably going to go with the same Michelin tire but in 2.40 inches. And I'm running tubes, so I'll probably air those down to about 20psi.
The advantage of a smaller tire in the winter vs a larger one is that it cuts through the snow instead of trying to ride on the snow. Unless you go all the way to a fat bike. So a knobby cyclecross is what you should probably try. Schwalbe has a new non-studded winter tire, Marathon 365, that looks like it would work in your use case very well.
Overall quite a disappointment for all of those involved.
I love tools,quality tools,buy cheap,buy twice,i think im addicted to tools!
For the 1sr time I bought a cheap pump from harbor freight the presta adapter unthereded the valve. When I screwed it on it was really tight I think that the oring in the adapter was of the wrong size it sealed well but was very tight going on and off. SO poor equipment design o manufacture can be too blame especially on cheap pumps
Thanks for the review; not being able to pack my full face pretty much makes it useless for me, shame they didn't account for that
lol You're a sad little man.
How about mounting it to a fence in the park?
Yeah, that would work if the clamp made it around the links.
@@pauldotbike I was thinking the fence post or is that too wide?
That's too wide.
You showed the perfect example why this "stand" is not not worth it

I've been using the Topeak Morph mini pumps for... 25 years? Been working great all that time. Basic difference would be they don't have the CO2 part added in. But yeah, having the hose for inflation on the trail makes things so much easier.
🤘🤘We're glad you're happy! Lezyne rhymes with design!
What bike is your son riding here?
It's a 20" Frog.
Funny how things is different to different people...to me the Lezeyne is the worst pump ever...it takes out the inner valve again and again, when using tubeless valves....
I've been thinking on this topic all weekend. And the only thing I can think of is the brand of tubeless valve. Due to the ubiquity of them at my LBS's, I use Much Off valves on all my bikes. This has never been a problem for me. Maybe it's the valves themselves that is the reason I have never found this as a problem?
Ahhh, memories of getting flats in front of work and getting Top Gear ruled out of the ride home. To toss my 2 cents in on what you've covered: - Portable electric pumps are heavy (or have the tiniest battery), very noisy, and struggle with >60psi. I tried a Xioami, it works but I used it maybe 3 or 4 times only, I don't recommend these at all. - I use a Lezyne Gauge Drive HP, since I need 60psi / 4bar for my road bike. Not quite high pressure but not high volume either. I love the gauge on the hose cause I have no feel for pressure, and I like the portability with the hose that fits inside the drive. The hose doubles as CO2 inflator. I use it mainly for top-ups when I'm out on my epics, not for inflating from zero. - The other issue people report with at least the portable Lezyne drive threaded chucks is sometimes the chuck is made with plastic, and can deform if you unthread it after inflation when its temperature is high. Easy solution: wait a few minutes for it to cool.
Plastic? I've never seen a plastic chuck on a lezyne. Good to know.
God, that looks depressing. I used to live going to that show. I even bought a bike there in 2012. There seemed to be a lot of empty soece there. I'm glad I stayed home.
Never skip core day! (Says the guy who always skips core day)
Core day is the worst.
Question: Looking to buy a Mokwheel Basalt ST fat tire ebike, but want to get rid of the 26 x 4 OEM wide spaced knobby off road tires, as I will be mostly street, groomed trials, or dirt roads riding. Found some 26 x 3 beach bike tires with more street treads that should perform better. Can any/all 26 x 4 wheels accept tubeless tires as it seems from you great video?
I looked up that bike. It looks like a very low end ebike. As such it's highly likely that the rims on the wheels supplied are not tubless ready. To be tuebless ready, they need to have a ridge on both sides of the rip for the bead to stay in. Espeically if sizing down from 4" to 3" you'll need that. I don't know which tires you found, but I recommend these for your usecase. veetireco.com/catalog-product/chicane/ They're 3.5" which would be a better fit.
It such a disappointment compared to other yrs, wasn't worth the $20 to get in.. Other yrs you could spend the day this was like you said an hour if that..
Were the rim and tire tubeless ready?
Yes.
Why did they even bother having the show. Sad
They shouldn't be at the International Centre. They used to be on the Exhibition Grounds where the downtown cyclist crowd can get there ON THEIR BIKES - what a thought! Looked smaller and sparsely populated too. Some of those e-bikes looked more like motorcycles - you think if Harley-Davidson slapped a couple of pedals on their motorcycles that they could get in there?
I can't believe there aren't better bike exhibits in Toronto, thanks for posting this, very disappointing. I'd rather goto an event where people just bring and show off their bikes to strangers in a parkinglot than something like this....
Wow what a lame bike show , where are all the big bike brands???
The entire bike industry is in shambles. Many smaller bike brands have shuttered their doors.
@@pauldotbike Thanks Covid !
the solution is to ride E MTBs . if you have enough power you can carry a ton of tools . my rear rack pack has about 15 lbs of tools spare tubes clothing , locks etc . i could break down entirely and rebuild my bike if need be . well not quite 😂
Thanks for sharing...
A great selection of tools.
So sad :(
Same here in Vancouver, BC. Very disappointed. Not much bike manufacturers or brands. Only few locals. Mostly chinese brand even not major brand showed up except Trek.
Waste of time
Ya I was seeing bike shops saying on Facebook don’t go to the bike show come see us lol
I appreciate this video, but did you interact with any of the manufacturers or displays? There could have been some interesting info from the unknown brands, or even some insight as to why some people are not there anymore. You paid to go (or got tix somehow), and went all the way out and only stayed an hour. I probably would have done the same, but I wasn't aiming to make a video about it! Anyway, I agree it looks bad, though I was never that keen on the shows even in their heyday. It's also worth mentioning if you didn't that the Spring show is still at Exhibition, and is generally bigger and better attended.
I talked talk to the retailers and some of other exibitors. I'm new to the RUclips game and didn't have the confidence to go all interview on them though. This was the spring show. It moved to the Interntional centre in 2020.
We took in the show the the Friday. There was a good crowd. It was smaller but this is the first show since the Pandemic. It should be back to normal size next year (I hope). Free parking is nice too.
Your so right I was very disappointed even discussed what a joke 😢😢
You're* so right.
thanks Paul!! did visitors have to pay for admission?,,,
Of course! And who knows how much exhibitors were gouged??
Boy, that really was disappointing and there was so much unused space there, indicating a significant lack of vendors. I might've asked for my money back if you paid. 😞
If I wasn't going for the express purpose of making this video, I would have been so angry. It was not worth the $20 admission and gas. Also, a bike show you can't reasonably get to by bike. Irony I should have brought up in the video.
We used to set up there. But it’s not worth it anymore.
