why would they, the patheon has a 2000 year old drainage system that still works, the water goes away, plus that is how the romans liked it so why change the original
They can't. The oculus primarily serves as a way to reduce weight on the dome
That hole probably helps protect the dome from water damage

The hole reliefs the dome from pressure since it's very heavy... If i wasn't for the hole the dome would've cracked & collapsed a long time ago... Fantastic engineering for that time .
The pantheon has its own sewer sistem, if you look closely to the floor you can see the holes. Why covering it ? part of being open its what make it so special, birds can fly throwgh it. Even once in ancient times it snow, and the moonlight iluminated the snow flakes as they come down from the dome!
They can cover it with glass , making roof window ?
@@Prometeusz That's not the point, yes they could cover it easily, but part of the allure is the fact that the Pantheon is open to the elements. It's a brilliant structure that I am blown away still stands 2000 years later.
The opening is positioned so that at a sacred time of the Roman religious calendar, sunlight would illuminate the entrance door for the Pontifex Maximus.
Why not just cover it with glass

I believe the Romans could have covered the opening with glass if the wanted but the didn't.

+Gustavo Ramirez Yes. It was designed so that the rain would help to keep the building cool during the summer. Also it has drains to get rid of the water.

bruh this building has been alive for 1800+ years and what happens if such thing occurs is that they cover parts of it and thats it
@@Intranetusa it's the Mediterranean, it doesn't really rains like in the tropics and neither it snows like in Scandinavian
