Studying Video Games As a Philosopher
Really plausible criteria and therefore great choices! Thanks for the great video : )
Hello mate, great video, please keep it up: Just a critique: I would, subjectively, argue. Yes you hit a lot of the big points, but i think you lost your way on the final 5. I think there's some recency bias going on. These games are wildly popular, and successful, but have they truly innovated? (perhaps Baldurs Gate 3 is an exception, but that remains to be seen as the future is not here yet). I find it very hard to see how games 20 to 24 are more Important that Final fantasy 7 & Command and Conquer (these are two huge cornerstones i feel you missed). And to a slightly lesser extent Goldeneye 64. I suppose popular and important are Venn diagram-esque in how synonymous but distinct they are, I would make an argument for Demon's souls being more important than Dark Souls, but i can understand the logic. Some other games not as pivotal as the aforementioned i think probably deserved a spot over some in your final third are ICO/Shadow the colossus, Resident Evil 1/2, Abes odyssey/exodus. But again, great list, just some subjective criticism. But I would genuinely like the hear the rationale behind not including FF7 and C&C but the 20-24 games make the cut
This is well put video, and generally well thought out. But trying to pick only 25 in a medium like this is either impossible or bound to lead to criticism. For example, while Doom was massively important at the time, it has been dwarfed by the impact of the Call of Duty franchise. There isn't a single racing game, not even GT2 or Mario Kart, despite how extremely popular racing games have been. Baldur's Gate III has competition in term of word counts and complexity: Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous. Metal Gear Solid was great, but the modern stealth is an ersatz of what it used to be, being now more closely related to Assassin's Creed, which we wouldn't have without Prince of Persia. And speaking of what some people call cinematic platformers, Tomb Raider? And Koudelka, Blood Omen and Soul Reaver all had better voice acting than Metal Gear. Tony Hawk is the only sport game in the list, but hasn't been as important as Fifa and its microtransactions. Or how about Oblivion and the horse armor? World of Warcraft or any other old MMO? Heck, in France Dofus might have been more important than WoW, with a cartoon, comics, movies, a second MMO, multiple MO spin offs, a publishing house... Princess Maker and Tokimeki Memorial? Fate? The Sims? Some of the first AAA video games, Wing Commander III and IV, feature Mark Hamil? I'm sure there are huge games I'm missing, like Angry Birds or other mobile games I haven't even heard of. I appreciate the last words on bias.
Nerds laughing about how the cider snake made them drunk is just cringey to me. Maybe I'm not dorky enough to appreciate this game
Greetings from Germany! Just found you and looking forward to watching your videos. 😊
Nice to have you on board!
Good, but on the first map, don't directly go after the electric spider, it's going to destroy you!
Sound advice. Something I've been doing lately is, immediately when you start in Joppa, just run off to the desert to the east and walk around until you find some Issachar, and loot some of their rifles. Good early game weapon to have
XCOM
Your jumper game is falling well behind Vlad Vexler. Just thought you should know.
It might be a fantastic game which I may never get to enjoy, thankfully to that plain Awful UI that prevents it from hsve a successful user experience for me. They managed to make it esoteric enough that I can't be bored to learn how to navigate an interface in order to play their game.
That's cool with the first book and it managing to survive the archive sweep. Currently writing an article about roguelike (deckbuilders) and their ontological separation from the early rogue-likes and was trying to dig out any decent long writing outside of people arguing about which MUDs knocked off each other first. (Well, it was supposed to be about slay the spire and sts "clones" and then suddenly I'm putting game mechanics and Bataille's complaints about poetry together...) I'll throw in a anti-recommendation(?). Player vs. Monster: The Making and Breaking of Video Game Monstrosity by Jaroslav Svelch. I found ti middling to disagreeable, but it did spawn a interesting line of czech-based videogame literature. Which has everything from Landian takes on the RTS genre to Fisher demonstrated through games
How do you feel about Lying by Sam Harris? It's a modern take on the Kant view of lying. Good read. Thank you for this video, two of my favorite topics
I never heard about most of these. Great suggestions!
Hope you enjoy reading!
I 100% agree-I can't believe these patents are approved. It's just ridiculous. I Hope Nintendo loses badly as a lesson and a message of freedom for the entire Game Industry. At this point, i am actually happy that 99% of mechanics are public domain already. But imagine if in the past someone patented the 3D viewport, player controls, FPS or RPG turn-based systems. You deserve far more visibility! great video thanks!
Thanks for the comment! I agree with you, I hope they lose too, but I'm not optimistic...
awful graphics, awful textual narrative. Go play 90s Anchorhead, Spider and Web or Curses...
Boring!
I see Wittgenstein and Caves of Qud videos on the same channel, I subscribe :)
Welcome aboard! :)
Newton both stole the SHOULDERS OF giants quote as used it as a snide dig at his rival Leibniz, who was a short man
Read “On the Shoulders of Giants” by Robert Merton for more details
Interesting, thanks for the recommendation!
I can barely wait to check this masterpiece out myself, purely based on the strength of this review, thank thee Sirrah!
Very good video. I rarely watch videos fully but this time I did. About Virtue 4 - what if you are not able to learn from mistakes? There is opportunity to learn from your mistakes, but if you can't learn from it, it leaves you frustrated, right? It would be nice to somehow always know how could you learn from mistakes... Like somebody else telling you "oh, you should have done this instead, perhaps then you could have survived".
Thanks! Glad you liked it :) You make a fair point. Not everyone will have the same experience with a game and some people won't necessarily be able to view failure as an opportunity for learning because they'll be too frustrated. Cogmind is kinda uncompromising in this because it just throws you into a brutal space and tells you to figure it out, and by bashing you over the head with failure and forcing you to adapt, if you're going to keep engaging with it and do better in it, you have to have this change in attitude. But clearly not everyone will get to that point. There's a really nice other roguelike called 'Tangledeep' which basically does what you say. Every time you die, it will throw out little hints like 'you know you had a healing potion in your inventory, right?' and stuff like that, so it actually does guide you towards learning through failure more than Cogmind does. But I think the approach of Cogmind leans more towards people who generally appreciate roguelikes in the first place and like the challenge of figuring it all out on their own. Thanks very much for the comment!
Bro, I love your videos, keep going. The gaming community needs your content. My most profound gaming experience to date comes from League of Legends, which I feel helped me feel part of society, and helped my social skills on a day to day basis. These two happenings are massively important for me, as I felt ostracized and isolated from the rest of society for most of my life. They helped me become happier and more well-adjusted, and helped people like me more.
Thanks so much for the kind words! :) And what you said touches on something really important too: gaming is a source not just of such social connection but social empowerment for so many people.
Nice video! I really enjoyed your take on Caves of Qud. I started playing it at launch, and now I’m as hooked as I was with games like Dwarf Fortress and CDDA. For me, the complexity of a game built over years of programming and content-creating a world that feels unpredictable because of its immense number of variables-is exactly what I look for in gaming. I’m not sure what most people think about AI in video games, but it seems like many players are either against it or quite skeptical. Personally, I’ve been following AI advancements closely for almost three years, and it’s clear to me that the future of gaming lies in creating unique experiences for every player. I imagine we’ll soon see playable platforms (rather than traditional games) where AI generates worlds that are even more surprising and complex than anything we’ve seen so far. Caves of Qud feels like a step in that direction, and it’s exciting to think about where games like this could lead.
Thanks a lot! I think we could soon see something like that with AI technology, and I'm not sure how I feel about it. The technology is getting more sophisticated as time goes on, but completely AI-generated games and worlds are still an emerging aspect of this. I just think Qud strikes such a great balance between pre-planned things and randomness, and you can engage with either aspect as much you like. Dwarf Fortress and CDDA are both more open-ended than Qud, but are both amazing too. Dwarf Fortress has become really influential in the games industry and is often cited as a particularly significant game, but CDDA is still underrated in the industry, I think. Roguelike players love it and tend to know about it, but it's really one of the best post-apocalypse simulators out there.
Im getting it thanks to you
Thanks for the video.
I must also point out the politically driven biases that many game developers have included in their games now as opposed to nuance and better quality stories/gameplay; at times when under criticism for quality, some devs have thrown out accusations, etc towards their own player-base (ie you're misogynists; racist; etc). - I do not understand the purpose behind alienating your consumers if you are creating a product where they make up the large majority of said consumer base. As someone who is pretty much in the middle, it's frustrating to see the political agendas pushed and pushed, while quality goes down and down - I am all for a third game category to be developed; 'politically driven games' perhaps?
Btw the clones don't clone themself. Usually
i saw your last video and was surprised when i saw your sub count, nice work
The prose on everything is great.
Cool video
Cool vid
20 euro is a lot for a game lime this
you are right, 20 is not nothing and games are getting more and more expensive.
you can play hundreds of hours for only $20, it is cheap
its pronounced Caves of Chud
Several IRL days on a detour because you stepped on goo? Rather than convincing me to buy the game, I think this is close to convincing me the game isn't for me...
That's fair!
0:00 caves of cuk
This title makes me think that Dwarf Fortress has yet to be discovered by you my good sir I was immediately told to shut up by your bringing it up. LOLLLLLLLL
A game with paid DLC's can never be the best roguelike ever made.
Interesting, especially the last bit. You're really selling this haha.
Good video, and a very interesting game. A tip though, you should record your VO in its entirety to run over the B-roll of the game and so on, and then do the odd VO section by memory to camera, to avoid the awkwardness of reading the script above our heads.
Yes. I stopped watching after 1 min, because of that
This is good advice, but just as a counter point, this didn't really bother me personally.
Dwarf Fortress or Caves of Qud?
Dwarf Fortress is much more challenging to learn, but it’s important to highlight that its complexity lies in its coherent variables, which create surprising and unique scenarios filled with epic stories. In this regard, it’s on par with Caves of Qud. Both games excel at generating compelling narratives, making them equally perfect for storytelling. However, many players abandon Dwarf Fortress due to its steep learning curve. Even those who play it daily often spend months or even years revisiting it on and off before mastering it. On the other hand, Caves of Qud is a role-playing game that’s much easier to pick up. Completing the tutorial provides enough knowledge to start playing confidently. I’ve been playing it since its release and have only referred to the wiki a couple of times.
Just want to say - this is such an excellent video and the best I've seen on Caves of Qud. Definitely going to pick it up right now!
I bought this game some time ago but couldn’t really get into it. I gave it another try a few days ago and my mind was blown. Such a great game. Dying has never been so funny before.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I may be "searching for meaning" here a little too much but... anyone remember that old Atari game, _Adventure_ ? probably my first "meaningful" game and one that came straight to mind when I started on CoQ... ofc the scale and capabilities of the two games are a galaxy apart, and yet... I guess it was the graphics in a way, they just ring the same bell in my mind.
Revolutionizing it? As an avid consumer of roguelikes, while Caves of Qud is an absolute gem, it is nothing next to Cataclysm: DDA or Dwarf Fortress for stories. I have many, many different interesting narratives from Cataclysm.
My favorite cataclysm story is walking outside and you just happen to step on an landmine and die
@@Kitsune2Megafan1086 I have a fond memory of running through the woods at night in the rain being chased by fungal zombies. Somehow got away. Then there was the run I had the breaking bad RV kitted out into a death mobile but wound out wiping out at high speed and broad sided a house. And every bad hospital raid. Which is all of them.
Call me a shallow gamer, and I’m sure I’m missing out, but I just can’t play a game with such block graphics. I wish this genre was made with more stimulating presentation… maybe one day.
That's totally fair, games like this require a pretty active imagination to fill in the blanks
@@SeaAycheEyeEye Ouch :)
You may want to keep an eye out for another game done by the same publisher (Kitfox Games) - it's called 'Streets of Fortuna' store.steampowered.com/app/2946850/Streets_of_Fortuna/
In the game, I chose the ability to convince people to follow me. The moment I got a tattoo gun, I gave someone a tattoo on their forehead and then changed their name. Every time I looked at the character's description, it said that Big Dick had a tattoo of a big dick on his forehead. Graphics don’t matter; this proves it.
You made my day! These comments are sooo wild!
That no-blink filter is really disconcerting -- also, the chatgpt description text gives the impression of a lower-quality video than this actually is. Minor presentation things though
It seems I AI-ed myself unconsciously!
man doesn't blink!
Gotta dial down the nVidia Broadcast AI filter that changes your gaze to look at the camera. You’re a man from an uncanny valley
just my uncanny self, didn't even know of this filter...
The fact that neither marathon nor halo 2 show up on this list is a big miss. Granted it could be just bias towards non-multiplayer games, but those two have had monumental impact on games as a whole. Marathon gave us our point-and-click aiming/shooting and halo 2 blew out online matchmaking in a way that most games to this day still echo.
Thanks for mentioning them! I'll take note for a future video :)
I think Goldeneye had a bigger impact than both those games. As for marathon in particular, I've been gaming since 1989-ish, and I watch a LOT of video game video essays, and i'd literally never heard of it until this comment, so I think that speaks volumes.
Iremember playing games like this a long time ago and thinking holy shit it will be amazing when ARPG`s catch up to such deep systems 30 years later and indie RPG are deeper then ever and ARPG`s are more shallow then ever lol
Immensely entertaining!
