The Wild Diaries
Добавлен 3 ноя 2013
👋 Hello, we are Heather & Peter (from the UK). I'm a newbie skipper (Heather) seeing how far we can sail our 50 year old sailing yacht Nokomis. ⛵️
I work a 9-5 and edit these videos in my spare time. One day I'd love to sail full-time. In the meantime, I'm starting my journey on our 25ft sailing boat and sailing it as far as we can in our annual leave.
Don't give up on your daydream! :)

Bikepacking the Outer Hebrides - Oban, Outer Hebrides, Isle of Skye, Fort William - a loop. | Ep 0 |

This video is from our bikepacking and wild camping trip to Scotland at the end of the summer in 2020. We decided to have an adventure until we had new jobs and just kept cycling. We cycled and used ferries to go between islands in the Outer Hebrides. Starting in Oban, with a ferry to Vatersay. We cycled north to Tarbert before cycling down the Isle of Skye and back to Oban via Fort William. We...
Awesome👌💪👍💚❤️
Thanks ✌️
Old is gold💛
Brilliant👌👏👏
Looks lovely :)
It was pretty special, great club and atmosphere! ❄️
Good choice, nice boat. Good size, you did well not to get drawn to something bigger. but perhaps you will have better gone for the Westerly, bilge keels save you £££ . Tidal moorings, the cheapest. Beach rather than lift out for bottom scrub anti fouling. They look a bit boxy, but sail surprisingly well. But…my friend had one..one of the keels fell off..a known issue.
did this 50 years ago with a wayfarer
Hey ! Loved your video! I’m Scottish living in Denmark. I just bought a wayfarer. Made a few vids if you wanna check them out! ☺️
Thank you! Great I’ll have to take a look ☺️
Beautiful country
Teneis una costa espectacular para disfrutar del Wanderer y la naturaleza. Aprovecharlo.
We're planning a trip in '25, when did you ho and how midgy was it pls.
Hey we went in September and it was very midgey! 😂
Great video, thank you!
That's going to make it tough to steer in high seas mate! Better get some duct tape!! lol
Really enjoyed this video. I visited the Outer Hebrides in 2015, and it's still my favourite spot of any I've had the fortune of visiting. Thanks for helping me to relive those memories!
Thank you so much, I’m so glad it helped you relive your memories ☺️
Wow! Just discovered y’all. I love sailing Scotland videos and was searching that when I found your channel. I enjoyed your content. Great job. ❤ I learned to sail in a wooden dinghy sloop at Hyde Park, England on a trip to the Edinburgh Festival with the USC Drama Group in 1969. I was 14 yrs old. A month later, I returned home and got my Dad to buy a Lido 14. I spent the next decade sailing Coastal Southern California, Catalina and Sierra Nevada Lakes. What great adventures I had. I wish we had You Tube then. 😂 My next boat was a 40 ft S&S Sloop. I enjoyed that for 14 years. However, I never lost my love for dinghy sailing. Now in retirement, I’m looking at dinghy Trailer Sailing for my next adventures. Your videos are inspiring. 🤗 Eric Clapton and The Yardbirds standing in one of those wooden sloops. www.alamy.com/stock-photo-yardbirds-on-serpentine-lake-in-hyde-park-london-23-april-1964-see-29575193.html?imageid=3F6E826C-66E4-441C-B709-6586078997B4&p=13044&pn=1&searchId=ca5b0191f7118bc3d887ec1ce3795c16&searchtype=0

Thanks so much!
Inspirational stuff.
Thank you! 😄
Love yer stuff keep it coming.
Thanks, we will!
Hi Heather and Peter, I really love your videos. I'm even thinking about buying a Leader dinghy, based on your blog post. I had never heard of them before, but I'm a single-hander, so I think it may be a suitable little cruiser for me. As for your new yacht, what a beauty. I think you were fortunate to have such a good handover from the previous owner - an excellent sign that the boat has been cared for. I'm looking forward to your next video, meanwhile, I have liked and subscribed - with thanks for the time you put in to making and editing these videos.
Thank you so much for you kind comment 😊 so glad our videos have inspired someone else! You are right, the previous owner was so helpful. We are busy resting from quite a long sail and doing our vegetable garden while it’s summer. We’ll have some more videos up though. There is a leader on EBay at te moment, not sure how set up for cruising it is though. We did love that boat! Hope you have some great adventures.
Great video! Super helpful advice
Great, thanks! Glad you enjoyed it 😊
any new vids for 2023
Hiya, I have quite a bit of footage from our trip from Gosport to the River Avon on Nokomis. I’m planning a couple of vlog type videos from that. Let me know if there is anything specific you’re interested in 😊
Great video. I'm looking for a either wayfarer or gp14. Wanderer ect. But the leader 14 looks a great cruising dinghy for me too. Keep vids coming
Thank you! Hope you find what you are looking for. 😊
TLC = truck loads of cash!
Hi, excellent video, I'm in a similar position, searching boats and watching RUclips channels for lessons and recommendations. Your vid has touched on so many great points. Thank you and good luck!
Thank you! 😊
And good luck with your boat journey!
@@the.wild.diaries nothing yet, found a couple of boats I like based on their apparent condition but over double the price I'm looking to spend. Ive just started putting together some forecasted costs for the first year of ownership for a first time boat owner. Actually that would make a great video! Boat cost for <=10m, survey cost, insurance minimum for marina use, and minimum cost, basic service costs such as engine annual service, doing it yourself, anodes costs, anchor chain cost assuming 7mm for example, expected cost for standing and running rigging replacement if needed etc. Lots to think about. Just making a wild assumption that I want to take on the expense of a berth in a marina up in fleetwood, for 12 months including costs for hard standing and lift out/launch after the winter, is over £6k including discounts! That's before I start thinking about cost of recoat while she's out, or other little jobs that should be checked over the winter such as prop bearing and the like. Lots to factor in!
Excellent advice 😀
Great!
What gear do you use for your Videos , etc?
Hi Chris, here is the gear which we use for our videos. Mostly a GoPro and a bit is filmed on my i phone too. I have a little microphone for voiceovers. themindfuladventurer.com/gear/
Oh and then export in 4K
@@the.wild.diaries It works very well 🙂
@@the.wild.diaries Thanks again
I'm loving your new channel, your video production skills are just wonderful. I love the interstitials, the quality of your narration, and the light music backing. As a new-ish sailor, this is really fun for me.
Thank you so much! I had to Google interstitials as we’re just mulling along and figuring out the editing to be honest. Glad you enjoyed the style of the video. 😊
Well done guys, she sails well and the Solent is a great place to learn. Fair winds. Andy UK
Thank you, Andy! 😊 She does sail well. We love the boat so glad we got her.
You're doing a great job guys; well done. I grew up sailing on the Solent. It is a challenging place to learn but well worth it. If you can sail there, you can sail anywhere.
Thank you! I hope so! We’d love to go further afield one day 😊
Varnish that tiller when you get a chance, it looks well weathered
Yep it’s on the to do list.
Actually anti uv epoxy, like entropy resins, or Merton's high gloss flexy, would work. As you may have heard, never varnish drying with epoxy bisphenol curing. So one for the ser quart. thanks
Super lucky to have that kind of handover / tuition.
I know, I’m so glad that we had this time to get to understand everything properly on the boat before taking it out on our own. 😊
Sunday night so time to relax and see what MA have been up to. Nicely narrated too. Thank you for making these videos 🙂
Thanks, Pete! Looking forward to figuring out the solar panel next time we come down 😊 hope you had a lovely bank holiday.
Very helpful video for newbies looking for their first boat. I’ve bought and sold numerous boats and had my share of projects and I enjoy them but all you said is true. Storage can kill a project and the point about the engine is very apt. I have anRival 32 now, it was stuck in a yard, but had a non running engine but I feel I bought it for a good price with this in mind. Engine was rebuilt for a good price and I was off sailing. Mooring in Chichester harbour on a swinging mooring which is affordable but clearly has its advantages and disadvantages. Good luck and look forward to following your channel. Andy UK
Thank you Andy, glad you enjoyed the video. Is that the same boat that the sailing brothers have? Glad you have a working engine now. Enjoy your sailing on your rival it sounds like it was all worth it :)
@@the.wild.diaries Hi, no the Sailing Brothers have a Rival 34 but it was essentially a modified 32 with longer stern and fuller aft sections and taller rig so it is a bit faster. Wild Rival a 34 with a deeper keel won the 1976 OSTAR in what was a windy upwind race. I must watch your latest video, in the meantime fair winds. Andy UK
Great video 👍 but with the boat you said ticked all the boxes ? Just ask around any boat yard or slip and someone will be there to help move your boat to a new yard for the price of a good sail and lunch with a few drinks throne in 😊 regardless of how experienced you are.
Enjoyed ur video.!!! Make more 👍⛵️⛵️
Yay, thanks! 😊
👍🦘
Australia?
Yes 🦘 Queensland
Ah, hello Paul in Queensland 😊👋
Welcome to the sailing club 🙂 we are moored nearly opposite you, with the big solar panels. I have put a small solar panel in your cockpit so you keep your batteries charged up. Add a small PWM solar controller and with a fuse wire directly to the batteries.
Wow thank you so much, that’s great and unexpected! We will look out for you and your boat when we are next there. 😊
Very good .
Cheers!
Great video, and though I've yet to buy I'd echo all your advice - I've come to the same conclusions on my 'journey'. I've even been eyeing boats at that slightly smaller length - there aren't many in that 25' slot.
It can be a long journey right, but hopefully it will save you time in the long run. What have you looked at so far? I’ve heard the advice before about ‘go small, go now’. Everything is cheaper when you downsize, but depends on your plans I’m sure. Good luck with it :)
@@the.wild.diaries Keeping costs under control is hugely important to me. My best bit of advice is to try to get a cheap mooring / berth first, (I think I've done okay to buy a swing mooring on a Scottish loch for modest money) that way one set of costs is a known.
That’s good advice, the mooring can end up costing more than the boat. Great that you’ve been able to buy one like that.
Excellent video, very well explained looking forward to seeing your adventures on the south coast; Happy sailing;)
Thank you! It took me ages to edit so I’m glad that it’s starting to get some views. Hope to have a sailing video up soon. Also great to see some women subscribe to my channel too. 😊👋 I’ll have to check out your sailing videos too.
@@the.wild.diaries You did a great job. Your subs will start to come in fast, so don't put pressure on yourself. Just enjoy your sailing;)
Cheers for the advice 😊👌⛵️
Lovely 🌹😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
Thank you! 😊⛵️
A lovely little video, thank you. I paddled from Ganavan Sands year a go. Four of us in two open canoes. A beautiful part of the country. I take it the campsite is no longer running at the lauch site now, a pity. I now have an Albacore sailing dinghy and would like to return and repeat the trip by dinghy. Best wishes Al
That sounds like a good wonderful trip. It’s so lovely there. I didn’t see a campsite there so I guess it must not be there anymore. Oh yes that sounds like a great idea, hope you get to do it 😊
Reminds me of my first boat Gull Spirit many moons ago
Oh really, what type of boat was this?
@@the.wild.diaries a dinghy about the same size as your leader make was Gull model was Spirit, used to sail off coast of Dorset and in reservoirs by Heathrow, then graduated to a Hunter Legend 27 weekender then Hunter 33 which we used to take across to France and Channel Islands, now sailing is too much so have a sports cruiser which is on River Dart and which we cruise Devon and Cornwall in the summer. Keep up the efforts with your channel, very interesting, have you seen Abbey Barnes channel quite good
Sounds like you have had some adventures! Enjoy your cruising this summer in Devon and Cornwall. Yes, I have seen Abby Barnes channel.
