    I never felt that my corporate colleagues were less intelligent or motivated than my consulting colleagues. If anything, they were more seasoned and mature. They were, however, pulled in a thousand different directions which is really what made things move more slowly in the corporate world (as you point out). I have always felt that people in US corporations have too many projects. Fewer projects might result in more focus and more progress.

      It depends on your office and the time you were there. If you can share some insights on your specific situation, we'd be glad to hear that. Like we said, most people leave voluntarily. But if you are behind the curve, the writing is already on the wall. Then the person usually jumps ship before they are forced out. And if someone is really forced out, it's not like they broadcast it to the entire office, that happens rather quietly.

    Unfortunately this is outdated - McKinsey is using simplified staffing model now which means you are basically assigned to a project by a PD manager instead of having the right to choose based on your preference.

      It might depend on your office, and the time you were there. We'd love to hear more about your specific situation. Being assigned to projects is usually what happens to the most junior colleagues, or if business is slow, and there aren't enough projects to choose from. But the basic idea of preference-based staffing is still there

      Are you PDM or EM/AP? Is this a recent development due to slow business or a permanent change? And if it is, up until what point would you assign people? At a certain seniority (eg SRAS with 2+0 tenure) it appears increasingly unrealistic that people are assigned.

    There should never be any demand for consultants. Business execs should take responsibility and do their own jobs without relying on some consulting firm to justify unpopular decisions. Otherwise they don't deserve those high salaries. "Consulting" by just-graduated 20-somethings should not exist, in fact it doesn't. These people don't know a goddamn thing and nobody should be paying them for advice. It's a parasitic business model that runs on bullshit.

    Mc partners are kinda smart, but they think they are smarter than they are. Once moved into real business world, they make lots of mistakes because the real world doesnt end in the theoretical slide, and they tend to optimize whatever KPI they found by cutting corners. My ex boss was a mcpartner, he was fired 3 years into the role because of fraud. He thought he was smarter than the dozens of people, processes and technology that was set to run the company. He also didnt know how to experiment in the market nor had any patience for organic growth to happen, everything was about closing whatever short term thing for this fiscal year, whatever it took, no matter how disaligned it was with existing capabilities or mid/long term strategy

    Ive worked at consulting and my partner and the other partners at the firm were really smart people, couple that with 15+ years of experience and dedication and you have an individual which is capable of understanding every business and their operations as well as its oportunities, when you get to that level you dont need to be a genius, you are a more than capable, the world is not run by geniuses, the world is run by these incredibly smart and hardworking people which have honed their skills for decades, as a conclusion, genius doesnt matter,

    The fact that you can make partner based solely on tenure is a huge red flag that shows they are not really geniuses

    • @CaseInterviewHub
      @CaseInterviewHub 2 месяца назад

      It’s actually not at all based on tenure. Across the different levels there are time windows in which you should be promoted, and if you are not, the up-or-out principle becomes relevant. But WHETHER you are promoted is not dependent on tenure, it depends on whether you pass the bar that is set for the role. For being promoted from business analyst to associate, for example, you need to show that you can handle a workstream by yourself. For becoming a project manager you need to lead teams and create first knowledge contributions. And for making partner, among other things, it’s about your ability to create business. Becoming partner is actually not a promotion, but an ‘election‘. And if you are not elected several years in a row, you are asked to leave. If you are interested, we may make a video about how you can make partner.

  • @jaeyoungchoi6790
    @jaeyoungchoi6790 4 месяца назад

    I agree that gen AI won't completely replace consultants, but I think, it is likely to replace some practices more than some other. Maybe you can make a video about this? for e.g. optimization projects vs CDD projects vs strategy projects - how each practices will be affected?

    • @CaseInterviewHub
      @CaseInterviewHub 4 месяца назад

      That's an interesting question. We would say the rule of thumb is: The more individualized and context-specific the project is, the less likely you'll see AI. That's why we would say in order of most to least affected: CDD > Strategy > Operations/Optimization. The reasoning is that a CDD (commercial due diligence) often follows a similar structure and a similar playbook. You need to gather a lot of information about an asset and about a market. And if your AI is plugged into the right, high-quality data sources, you could relatively easily create certain market overviews, with growth rates, price changes, or market share developments. DDs are usually some of the most stressful projects with a lot of material to be produced, but part of it could be semi-automated. So, it could be an interesting proposition (even though it still needs a lot of human intelligence, reasoning, and contextualization). A strategy project is extremely company-specific. You could establish some market overviews with AI. But to lead the discussions on where the company should be headed is way beyond the AI. Lastly, operations projects. There are some types of optimizations where AI could be very useful (e.g., e-commerce, or logistics). But in others, where you really need to get your hands dirty, observe processes, and interview employees, it's much more difficult. That's extremely hands-on, and extremely context-specific - and therefore, not really AI territory. But definitely a question to think about!

    Hey @CaseInterviewHub If I've done some online certifications, how and where should I mention it?

    • @CaseInterviewHub
      @CaseInterviewHub 4 месяца назад

      Usually they would go into additional information, or extracurriculars (e.g., Google certificate on machine learning) If they are absolutely essential to the role, or quite significant (a 12 week intensive online course from Harvard) then you could put it into the education section as well. A rule of thumb: The more important it is in your overall application story, the more prominently it should be positioned. And if you have done 20 courses on Udemy which are all not relevant, you don't need to mention them at all.

      This is precisely why I like having a portfolio coach guide my day-to-day market decisions: with their extensive knowledge of going long and short at the same time, using risk for its asymmetrical upside and laying it off as a hedge against the inevitable downward turns, their skillset makes it nearly impossible for them to underperform. I've been utilizing a portfolio coach for more than two years, and I've made over $800,000.

I work for startups, selling to big corps, and know these intricacies since God's knows when. I understand now why all my friend having to deal with external consultants finds them useless. That’s why you don’t chase money and when deciding on which job to take, try to choose the one that you’ll make the most impact with. The one that is a complete mess, so your experience and know how will have lasting impact. A lot of consultants get high positions as well without being true leaders and cannot manage a team.
