I think she hung herself because she proposed to a young man that turned her down because he said she was bossy and too plain and then this much older man turned her marriage proposal down as well. I think her dream was to get married and have children. I think she felt she would be alone for the rest of her life.
I hate it when they get rid of the most important characters in movies. I stopped watching when she hung herself. It would've been nice to see her get those women to where they needed to be and finish what she started.
I stopped watching when she hung herself. She was the only reason why I watched this movie in the first place. I wanted to see how she would get those women where they needed to be until the end. I hate it when they kill off the most important characters.

For that time period, Mary Bee with her working farm, cooking and homemaking skills, trim figure, musical ability (she had been a school teacher in the book) and merely plain face would have been a catch on the prairie. But that fact would not have advanced the story. She had a long way to go before she hit ugly. Asking male visitors to do minor chores would not be a deal breaker.

Great movie; well acted; But strange.
A male actor can loose his looks or never have any and find work but usually a woman needs looks on hollywoood. Once she gets old as we all do acting jobs diminish.
