The air filter, really? The mass air flow sensor tells the engine how much air gets in so the fuel management system will inject as much fuel as needed. Yes with a dirty air filter, you loose power but definitely wont damage the engine in cold weather. Drive gently the first 5 to 10 mins? The temperature gauge means shit, it shows the coolant temp, not the oil temp. Tthe oil temperature matters, no hard accelerations or high rpm if oil is below +/- 80'C. So on summer tires you overrev an engine? Well then you are an idiot and have also no traction control enabled. And who drives on summer tires in snow or icy conditions is a moron. That's the ones you see stranded on the roadside. With the warmup time i agree, i usually wait like 10 seconds to 1 minute until the rpm's drop and then i drive. But never let the engine run in idle for extended time until it warms up, specially not on Volkswagen, they are known to have low oil pressure in idle so letting it run in idle will kill the engine fast. Hello Golf GTi ;-) And most of the other warnings like low coolant level applies to any weather, cold or warm.

I absolutely agree with most things you mentioned, BUT! First off, about putting your car in neutral while driving for an extended amount of time: 8:24 - Why would it make the car less responsive when braking? The brakes are an independent system from engine and transmission. And it doesn't become "less" responsive when trying to accelerate, it becomes non-responsive completely... (engine no longer engaged to transmission) Plus, you could've done just a little more research there. If you just take the foot off the gas whilst in gear and look at your fuel consumption, it drops to 0.0L/100km or basically infinite mpg until the engine reaches idle revs. Those "modern injection systems" you briefly mentioned simply stop injecting fuel into the engine whilst keeping the revs up, reducing load, but keeping RPMs up in order for the water pump to provide more cooling water, plus: the oil pressure doesn't drop, since most oil pumps are operating via chain/belt. The car runs on gravity and the movement of the wheels/transmission. Secondly, not as big of a point, but nonetheless, about shifting at high speeds: It is always a bigger strain on any transmission and the engine, regardless of manual or automatic. I've had a car with a DCT for 2 years, driven some cars with normal hydraulic ATs, and I own 2 manuals now. Disengaging and reengaging a clutch at high RPMs is always a stressful situation. In manuals, it is recommended to rev up the engine to about the rpms neccesary for the intended gear. Modern automatic transmissions are usually somewhat constructed to shift at high speeds, but are intelligent enough to not let you engage a gear that cannot handle the speed and would exceed the RPM limit (like switching into 2nd gear at 130 mph). At least my car was smart enough back then => 2007 VW Touran

Thanks for your detailed insights! You’ve raised some valid points that add great depth to the discussion. Let’s break it down: Neutral While Driving: You're absolutely right about modern fuel injection systems and how they work to optimize fuel efficiency when coasting in gear. I appreciate you pointing out the interplay of the water pump and oil pressure-those are critical details I could have elaborated on. The braking responsiveness part, while not directly affected by the engine, can feel different due to the loss of engine braking assistance, which some drivers rely on subconsciously. But yes, my explanation could’ve been clearer! High-Speed Shifting: Spot on about the strain on transmissions and engines. Rev-matching in manuals, or the intelligence of modern automatics, plays a huge role in minimizing stress during high-RPM shifts. Your experience with different transmission types adds real credibility to this discussion, especially the example of your VW Touran. Thanks again for the constructive critique-it’s comments like yours that help refine the conversation!

Thanks for the laugh. My Japan-built 2020 Corolla SE sedan 6-MT, purchased in late 2019, was a bag full of problems & needed towing due to various failures on multiple occasions during the 2 years & 10K miles that I kept it. It also developed too many interior rattles to count. Everything is a roll of the dice these days, in a world full of tech-bloated, overpriced, cost-cutting-galore garbage.

@JJ-nh8lv that is 100% accurate, as well as safety standards forcing manufacturers to lard on other stuff, this is what is driving cost up of vehicles, NOT corporate greed, just look at their balance sheets, our government is screwing us for fractional improvement in safety and economy, but, we get what we vote for, how I long for the late 60's, when a car was a car...
