If an adventure needs a particular weapon, such as an undead that can only be hit by a 3 sword, create a series of encounters that culminate with you earning the special item or gear. · Published adventures often do not consider what gear you had when they were written; fixing your gear is more manageable than fixing the encounter. · Side quests often have: o A minimal cast of characters. o Few...

Always be prepared for multiple outcomes in every scene, but don't commit to any before you have played it out. Solo Playing Tips: Think Defensive #soloRPG #soloRPGtips
I love flipping through books like this to get inspiration for a location I'm building out. I haven't played solo in awhile, but it might be time to break out my books and resources and spin up a character!
The audio is way too quiet. Good advice though.
The audio is way to quiet compared to other videos and music. I had to bring it up to 100% (and I normally only need around 28-30% for 90% of all youtube content), which is not optimal, since the next video from the "to watch" playlist will most likely roar like a starting jet (I listen to those in the background as I work). To be honest, I only noticed the video is playing at all because of the strange silence compared to the previous one. Please try to adjust the volume of your speaker, or have it closer to your mouth.
The audio is way too low compared to other videos, I barely could hear what you're saying even after bringing the volume up to 100%.
I'm a big fan of day dreaming as prep for solo play. 🙂
It's so easy to gloss over combats as just another set of dice rolls. This 'make it an entire session' approach offers an interesting alternative. Thanks for the inspiration!
Thank you for this! Cheers from the USA 🇺🇸 🇬🇧🇺🇸🇬🇧🇺🇸🇬🇧
Thank you for teaching me to use premde adventures
Well said. World building by working back from the known state of the campaign (PC actions and dice results) is something I've been exploring as well.
What a clever idea! That opens up a lot of possibilities. 🙂
Just to let you know, your sound levels are off. I have you at full volume and you're still very quiet.
Sorry, every so often my mic plays up and if I don't notice this is what happens. You may find there are two or three videos like this as I tend to record them in batches.
The Cypher System is pretty good with how it offers these as both items and intangible "lucky breaks" that are usable once and go away, to be replaced later.
Thanks for this reminder! It's really easy to get lost in a solo game with a thousand side quests 🤠
I think it was the Pendragon Noble's Book that allowed you to advance a holding through the seasons. Engaging fun as you tried to balance your obligations to your lord while keeping the peasants in line.
Thank you. Most games don’t get a post-mortem😊
I love your solo playing tips. I plan on using this tip for an opponent that should go down easy but the fight goes on for rounds and rounds for whatever reason. Maybe the dice are telling me that this otherwise uninteresting goblin is important :)
Point crawl mapping kind of works that way. You don't really need a detailed map, just "where can I go from this point?" You probably remember the old Scott Adams text adventures on the computer back in the early days, they were the first example of this I can recall.
Oh, no! Dr. Evildoer headed to Vegas and met a showgirl named Flo! He got hitched and stopped being evil. 😉
Everything works and flows better when you get organized.
It also helps to visualize what the outcomes of both options are, before you roll. You generally know what you want from a Yes, but if you also know what you expect a No to look like, it helps. This certainly makes those outcomes more meaningful.
I love this simple idea of taking a different adventure path from the previous critical yes/no situation. Thx!
Will you send DriveThruFiction discount links in your mailing list posts for these when offered?
Yes, I will get into the habit of doing that, but for the first couple I wanted to see the organic traffic that DTF offered. Next week I will publish Herbert West Reanimator, and I will offer discounts for all three books published so far. That will also be the time to start thinking about footers to cross promote them, and bundles to create the digital box set.
Hey I just came across this as I have the original book and wanted to run a solo campaign, awesome rules!
Add some pepper to a balmd encounter. Good tip!
Are you updating the classics "for the kids"? 😅 I have the Frankenstein, but haven't had a chance to tuck in yet. It is a neat idea to do some editor pass versions of public domain stories.
They are not really for kids, but as a British person, I find the language of some of the classics to be long-winded and hard to understand. I am just trying to make the language more accessible. Since doing Franky, I have started corresponding with two people doing similar things. One is working on updating all the John Carter of Mars books, and the other is suggesting books that could benefit from this treatment.
@@ppmgames I am just kidding about the old "update Shakespeare for the kids" idea back when I was one of the kids. It is a neat idea, all told. Especially for pulps, which often suffer from the "paid by the word" issue in addition to some occasional dated terminology or purple prose.
The new design hides free titles like Quickstarts, previews, and character sheets in New Releases. I didn't even notice this until I knew there was a freebie that came out and I didn't see it in new releases, which is my go-to section when shopping. It also does really weird stuff with filters to the point that it is often best to just start over if you get into a cul de sac with zero results. Not a fan of the new storefront. That said, I do like the new method of handling the post-purchase downloads. Mixed bag...

The sound quality on this video is your best so far!
Interesting analysis, thanks for sharing.
Where can I find the solo rules?

This will be a video i come back to frequently for reference.
Hi again, I wondered if you know if its possible to solo Unknown Armies? Or have attempted to do so?
I have never looked, but I can put it on the to do pile.
@@ppmgames thank you!
Hi I wondered if you did a Delta Green solo ruleset? I read two blogs where you mentioned you were working on one but I can't find anything else on the matter. Really great content thank you.
I did, but I couldn't use Delta Green in the name. Look for Rogue Handler.
@@ppmgames just picked it up awesome! Thanks again :)
I'm not sure the etiquette for suggestions on content so apologies if I shouldn't make them but I'd really like to see you make a solo ruleset for the Blade Runner RPG by Free League. I'm unaware if you have a video already discussing Rouge Handler but a video of a small playthrough of either would be amazing! Thanks regardless.
15-20 characters for one short module?! Jfc, definitely never touching DCC.
Typically 4-6 players play a handful of simple characters. If you are imagining a “DnD” experience that’s not what you get from the funnel in DCC. Think of the funnel like a part of character creation.
@@CaseyWilkesmusic Okay, first of all, DCC is inspired by original D&D (which sucked, but still) so don't act like comparing the two isn't exactly what was intended. Second, I don't enjoy meatgrinder games. Nobody does, except for tryhards and murderhobos, and if you really want to defend either of those types, you can just fuck right off to another planet.
This is cool. Been buying your books for years and ran into this video randomly not knowing it was you at first. Awesome!
This is brillaint stuff bud I saw your stuff on Humble Bundle a couple of weeks ago and got the bundle as I was just getting back into TTRPG games and will be mostly solo playing and I just found DCC and MCC have my books on the way this was included as well so this is brillaint for me. Just starting to watch now :-) thanks again.
Great idea, would like to try solo Pathfinder 2e
On a related note, sometime I make a PC that doesn't quite click for me. I will keep the setting as developed and make a new PC and down shift the old one into an npc role. Sometimes sthis happens a few times and by the their or fourth character there is a a lot of setting and that PC is ready for a full campaign.
That's a terrific idea! That would also let me customize tactics unique to setting or NPC or particular situation. If I do that far enough in advance (or have sort of 'generic' tactics tables for encounters with a type of person or in a type of locale) then I'll forget the details by time I use it and will be surprised (to some extent) by what pops up in a fight. Very cool.
Not only complicating and slowing down play itself, I find that time spent over-prepping also cuts into the time I'd otherwise be actually playing.
Unless you see prep as play. For some people the creative activity of creating all this stuff, even if it is never used is part of the fun. If that isn't you, then definitely do not over prep. You can jump in and if you have to break off to prep a bit, as least you are prepping stuff you are going to use right now.
@@ppmgames oh, prep is definitely play... but then it's better to actually _use_ that prep to play! 😄 When it comes to solo gaming, I tend to suffer from "Episode 0 Syndrome"
It's also possible to send in "reinforcements" to add to an encounter that turns out to be easier than expected, especially if there is some great benefit or reward for winning.
100% Agreement. Trimming out the extraneous is always a good tactic. Drink deeply of suggestions and ideas and then focus on the ones that work in play.
The luxury of solo, you get to choose and nobody ever argues. You can even do it one way one day and another way the next day😮
Amazing resource just ordered it today :) Still yet to read in depth.
Great advice!
Time to mine city of brass
That's a good attitude.
I'm a mite confused how this works. Does this function as anything more than an interactive novel? Would it work with the game Paranoia?
So what do you suggest is the best way to deploy the amped-up boss abilities if needed? If present in game rules, should they just be in play automatically from the start of the encounter? Should the boss's use of berserk (or whatever) depend on a decision dice roll in the moment? Should the player decide, ok, presto now he's berserk in the middle of play whenever the fight seems lopsided? - I'm trying to figure out best way to do this with least detrimental impact on immersion. Suggestions appreciated.
I've always preferred the "ammo check" idea rather than tracking individual ammo. In the event of a critical failure, it might mean you are out of ammo. That way there's still the dramatic tension, without the minutia of accounting for every shot.
👍
