She had, probably, a maniac episode followed by the development of schizophrenia due to the pressure of her personal and artistic life. There are theories that say she was having a fantasy by the end, becoming the white swan (who dies in the original ballet by the prince's arrow), because the screen doesn't fade into black (commonly death in cinema), but to white. In each case, she was, in fact, sure she had become the swan itself, so she had to die in order to be perfect and true to the ballet's plot.
