    Thanks again for hosting the photo pf the month video. I do get inspired when I see your work along with these works from the other subscribers. I'm super happy with my Nikon 100-400. I'm not sure that is that much better than the Tamron you mentioned, but I've never shot with the Tamron. BTW, the only lenses NOT in my bag are the ones that I can't afford to purchase yet LOL.

    The key is that they all shoot genres that don't make any money.......They aren't making money off the actual photography. That is how you know they are selling you something.

    • @MichaelCantwell
      @MichaelCantwell 3 дня назад

      I would agree with you that most if not all of the landscape photographers aren't making money from prints. It's why they do seminars, books, online classes, personal tutoring, ect. i also think the very few at the top are making money from ads here on this platform. I believe they make money from a wide variety of avenues, and I don't see anything wrong in making revenue where you can. Most will tell you if they were given a free product for a mention or review, though not all. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    Hi Michael,I love your relaxed, down to earth style. I found your video during a search for adviceon what Equipment to take on a lengthy cruise around South America and the Caribean. Since we will duing scenic cruises I figured out I would need a long telephoto. So I will be saving up - at a recent Nikon Day I had the chance to try the 180 to 600 Nikkor. It worked well on my Z5 . Instead of the 24 - 120 I will take my 24 - 200 lens . Any experirience with that ?

    • @MichaelCantwell
      @MichaelCantwell 6 дней назад

      Thanks for watching and commenting. I owned the 24-200 before the 24-120. I eventually sold the 24-200. I did use the 24-200 on one cruise and I really couldn't complain. IMHO the 24-120 is the better overall lens even for a cruise. The 24-120 is a better lens not just for the F4 but also it's a sharper lens across the frame more so than the 24-200 was for me at 24 and the 200 range. The 24-200 is probably still better than most or even all F mount lenses in that range, so I'm not trying to downplay it, but if I could only have one, for me it's the 24-120, even on a cruise. I've never had access to the 180-600 so I can't comment on it. For me it would be more about carrying a large lens around a ship or even on shore than it would be for the reach, but that's only my opinion. Good luck on the trip.

    Thanks, Michael. I enjoyed watching that. 👌🙌 I'm considering buying a cheap-ish 12MPish camera with an infrared conversion already made. I have tried using a Hoya Infrared filter in the past with so-so results, but I like the idea more of being able to hand-hold a converted infrared filter with results 'straight out of the camera'. Here’s a like and a comment for the algorithm - welcome to the wonderful world of monetization! That and a buck fifty will get you a small coffee at your local diner 😊 But a word about your Voigtländer conundrum… the 40 is a wonderful lens, that will melt your background in most situations. The one issue I had (and this is based on my preferences - your mileage may vary) was the highlights in background bokeh… whether that’s actual lights behind your subject, or little glints of sun through the leaves, the bokeh can look a little too present. That is to say, if you’re looking for 3D pop and separation and highlights way back there, the bokeh of lit objects can feel very close instead of distant. Maybe that’s a plus for you; say if you’re taking prom photos and you want those little lights to dance around like magic sprinkles, then yes, maybe the 40 f1.2 is for you. But if you like lights in your background to be back there, then the 75 is your huckleberry. And the falloff on the 75 is just a dream - moreso even than the f-mount 58mm f1.4g.

Speaking of photographers on RUclips, there’s an Englishman who does MrLeica (Matt Osborne) who’s done some pretty extensive reviews of the 40 and the 75. If you watch them, watch for the way the 40 melts everything except bright spots - that’s the point I’m trying to make.

 Hope this comment helps you on your path to that first coffee ☕

    I love my nikon 80-200 so much. For DSLRs, it was one of the sharpest lenses that I owned, even compared to primes. And the bokeh was really nice. Mine broke about a year ago, and really was the impetus for me to finally jump to mirrorless. I can't get rid of mine either. Yes, it will still manually focus, but no, I want autofocus on a lens like that. I'll be keeping mine, too. I don't think I can actually get any money for it now. Like you, my 24-120 has now taken over as my go-to telephoto zoom.

    Interesting Michael. I agree with you on the 80-200mm all versions of that have a special rendering imo. I thought your rant was heading in a different direction- namely FTZ adapter. Are you not disappointed that Nikon has not released an FTZ with motor drive for all the AF D lenses? You couldn’t AF your 80-200 on your Z8 even if the selection ring hadn’t broken- that to me was a kick in the face to all loyal Nikon owners and a missed opportunity. I have a Z7ii only using Nikon originally from D50 D300 and D610. I sold all my AFD lens because of the FTZ lack of functionality. Tbh I nearly always shoot manual lens now ironically- I have a z Mount Voigtlander 40mm which is my favourite/ go to lens. I have enjoyed exploring using old manual lenses on the Z7 - particularly as I discovered a way to get focus confirmation on all manual lenses by using a Sony to z Mount Af adapter from Neewer - I adapt my lens to So y and then use the thin Af adapter to convert to Z Mount and this gives me focus confirmation- game changer if you use manual lenses. Regards Andy

      @MichaelCantwell 24 дня назад

      Hey Andy, thanks for watching and commenting. I love the Voigtlander 50mm F2 Apo lens. I considered picking up the 40mm but it being so close to the 50, I'm afraid I wouldn't use it that often despite from what I've heard the 40mm has a far different character than the 50mm Apo. I owned the 40 and 58mm Voigts for the F mount and found myself reaching for the 40 more often than the 58mm. As far as the adapter, I think that makes my point of companies wanting you to keep purchasing new products. I really owned used about 3 F mount lenses not counting the 2 Voigts, so the adapter issue didn't bother me as much as someone who was far more invested in older F mount glass. I can however see your point. And for the record, I'm with you. I manually focus many of my images as well. The only ones I don't are the birds in flight and kids playing sports. Most portraits, even kids, landscapes, and all most of my infrared images are manually focused. Yes, I am a HUGE fan of the Voigtlander lenses. To me they are the bargain on Z mount and other mounts as well. Thanks again.

    I learnt long ago that, for the most part, camera companies don't give a damn about loyalty to a brand. Nikon has always felt like it knew more than its customers, particularly their professional customers, and their ego has come back to bite them on many an occasion. When the Z6 and Z7 were released. Nikon didn't think, about the customers who bought the D850. They didn't want to interfere with the D850 sales, so they released cameras which didn't compete with the D850 in terms of body ergonomics and autofocus. They just presumed that Nikon professionals would stick with Nikon. I have been a Nikon user for 20+ years. I have SLRs and DSLRs, and I waited, and waited for years, for Nikon to make a D850 replacement. By October 2022, I just gave up and bought a Fujifilm GFX100s, which is now my main camera for studio work. I have a D850 for corporate work, nature and pet photography. A second-hand Panasonic S1R, which I bought to use with my Zeiss manual lenses (a fun camera), and Fujifilm X-H2 as my carry-around camera. Will I go back to Nikon? Probably when the D850 needs replacing, but I can't foresee that before the end of the decade. Will I be investing in Nikon lenses, probably not.

  • @frederickmcdonald6636
    @frederickmcdonald6636 25 дней назад

    Yes, I hung in through the whole rant and acknowledgement of loyalty. I completely understand your point and I hope that one day you get a surprise in the mail. I've been a Canon guy all my life and love their products and at one point I too looked at all the others to see if I wanted to go to a different brand when I transitioned to mirrorless, but I stayed true to Canon. I think it's easy to slip to another brand because for a short time one brand may be a little better at autofocus or stabilization or colour, etc., but I stayed loyal too. Yet, I'm now playing with a Fujifilm X-T5 just for fun because it takes me back the same way your 80 to 200 does, but I'll never leave Canon because I love and know their quirks. When I'm on the job I take my trusty R5 and I relax. So for those of us who are loyal all I'd like to say is let's continue to enjoy the process and the memories will come - just be cool. Take care out there and thank you for your thoughts and honesty....

      Thanks for hanging to the end. I forgot to mention that I considered Fuji as well. I still would love to own a 100S but in truth since I photograph a wide variety of subjects the Nikon Z8 suits my needs more than the Fuji 100S could. What was interesting was there were a couple of photographers that I enjoy here on RUclips that went from Sony to Fuji and now went to the Z8. I admit I watched their videos mostly to see how they made out with the Fuji system. I assume I was ahead of the curve. LOL. Unless you have a specific reason for a specific brand most know you can achieve great success with pretty much every camera body on the market today. The lenses, well, to me that's where you can debate the topic. smiles. Thanks again.

    This is the first time your channel came up for me while watching my favorite photographers. Your thoughts here are 100% the same as what I was wondering with Nikon. I think most of this is pretty obvious. Just today, I saw Nigel Danson shooting with his Z 6III and occasionally he does single shoots with a fixed focal length Z lens. It’s pretty obvious he is being sponsored. But, I am not finding fault with him by any means. About 15 months ago I went mirrorless. Previously a Canon user and zero problems. Deciding I would not use adapters, I was free to chooses any system. A Z 7II fit for my purpose of landscape as did Nikons lens selection. It fit for me for my type of photography as does other systems for other people. It’s a-shame too many photographers make it into a competition.

      @MichaelCantwell 27 дней назад

      Hello Kerry, thanks for watching and commenting. It's not a competition, I agree. As far as Nigel or any of the others, more power to them. A new video will sorta build on some of my thoughts in this video. There are photographers on RUclips who have worked very hard and should enjoy the fruits of their labor. My only other thought on it would be that I hope the audience understands all the motives of the people making videos, me included. Smiles. Thanks again.

    I shoot mostly video but I shoot a lot of photos also. For me the easy choice was Panasonic. Right now I’m using a S5IIX and S1. I think everyone noticed that Nikon bought RED! Seems like they’re trying to make a splash in video……I use lumix native glass mixed with some Canon EF glass……Cheers!

    I'm a bit cautious when backing up photos on the road. I also bring plenty of cards, and I never erase shots in the field. I might erase blurry ones if I review them in the hotel at night. A good day of travel photography is 350-500 shots, and I'm a fastidious backer-upper. While I used to use Samsung T5 or T7 portable, external, SSD drives for daily back-ups on trips, on my recent month-long trip to Australia, I switched to the brand-new, Nextorage portable SSDs, which I find better cuz they're much smaller, much lighter, and perhaps even a bit faster. So far, so good with the Nextorage drives, but the jury is still out. So, in my process, I have two copies of my photos in the field: 1) on my cards that I don't erase, and 2) on a portable, external SSD. Then when I get home, I back up to a larger external hard drive before finally erasing my cards, which leaves me with two copies. Prior to this system, I never erased my SD cards. I just used those as instant archives and bought more cuz they are so cheap. I can't really afford to do that with CF Express Cards tho.

    Thanks for hosting the photo of the month video. I love seeing what other subscribers create! And I get inspiration from these shots! As for Nikon, I was in the same boat. Switching to mirrorless from my D810 a few months ago was a big decision. I looked at all the brands cuz jumping to mirrorless gives you a great choice. In the end, I just am so happy by what I've been able to create with my Nikons that moving seemed unwise. And am I ever glad that I have a Z8 now. I'm so pleased with the images, and it has opened up whole new genres to me. I'm sure all other brands also allow for great image production, but it's Nikon for me.

    Nikon was being wrong-footed by Sony. Sony was getting lots of traction because it was making headway in both improving their flawed cameras (every few months) and offering exciting specifications in seemingly super-talented small packages that set a high bar. Nikon had been solid and ever-present but not flashy as a gold standard pro brand. They couldn’t emulate the cheeky upstart by dropping improved iterations of current models every few months nor did they want to. The new Nikons have the excitement and technical chops without breaking Nikon’s traditions and keep the Nikon cachet. The marketing shows serious photographers doing serious work with Nikon tools and that’s a clever win for Nikon. They didn’t become Sony but they borrowed the idea of using RUclips influencers to revive their market position.

    Like a lot of people my age, I started out with a Kodak Instmatic 126, which I upgraded to a Minolta Hi-Matic F in the early 70s. When I was ready to move to an SLR I bought a used Nikon FE from my uncle. Sadly, that was stolen before I even finished paying for it. After that I went with a Nikon F3 which I still have today. So when I retired and wanted to update to digital I was drawn to the Nikon Z series. I've had my Z50 for about 6 months now and am enjoying learning what it can do.

    Interesting Michael. I have shot with Nikon since 2009 and was desperate for them to enter the mirrorless market. Sticking with them through thick and thin, my patience eventually paid off. I love my Nikon Z8 and Z6III along with some really great lenses. I am so glad I stuck with Nikon.

      It's why I say just stick with your gut and don't always follow the herd. All the companies make really good camera bodies these days. For me, it was more, I knew once Nikon began putting effort into making lenses for the Z system, Nikon would be a winner in my mind. They always make good lenses even if at times they lag behind in the camera body department.

      @murlidhr Many, many thanks for your comment about the sheep photo. Yeah, we were out that morning near the Southern-most tip of the South Island in New Zealand looking for birds, so I had my settings on a high shutter speed (1/1600). It was windy. As we walked thru the wooded area there was that sudden clearing you see in the image and that sheep walked right into it and stopped. I couldn't believe my luck and the lighting. In terms of crop, that image is 100% uncropped. Not that I have anything against cropping at all. I crop all the time, just not this one. The sun was rising from the left side but being a bit blocked by a mountain, and it must've been cloudy like it is almost daily in New Zealand. LOL. The out of focus bits are mostly due to the separation of the main subject from the background and foreground that the lens produces, and that I was shooting at 560mm, which is the max zoom for that lens with the 1.4 tele-convertor on it. The lens gets pretty good separation in camera. Not as creamy as a prime, but I like it. Then, I did a tiny bit of masking in Lightroom to blur the background and foreground a little more for additional separation and isolation of the main subject. For me, perhaps the biggest surprise was that this photo was shot with ISO 10,000. Coming from DSLRs, I never trust high ISOs, but the Z8 seems to be fine with it. I don't think that I've ever shown a photo with such a high ISO, but, well, it seems like it's fine. I cleaned up the noise by running it thru DxO Pure Raw 3, which seems to be working for me. Thanx again for asking.
