A casual sailing tutorial. Tell-tales, point of sail, how to run aground lol #HobieTandemIsland
Yeah, so in the end we ran aground and the camera battery died. Haha. It's important to listen to the person wearing polarised sunglasses, they can usually see discolouration in the water best. easy walk back to deeper water. It was a fun day out on the Hobie Tandem Island as always.

Quick lesson. Tie your boat to a cleat. An important one to tell your sailing partner lol

Demonstration on our little Hobie Tandem Island. It’s best to tie your boat to a cleat on the dock so that your hands are free.

Powering and depowering on the Hobie TI without furling. It's a bit of an advanced sailing skill but handy when you don't want to furl/unfurl in some conditions. #hobiekayak #sailing #watersports @HobieOfficial
Sailing tip: explaining wind-over-tide in my Hobie Tandem Island on Westernport Bay.

Plus some downwind safety talk. Wind-over-tide is when the wind pushes up against the tide, it creates steep square choppy waves. It's something to be aware of when sailing through a bar or a passage. As always, be aware of the conditions and adjust your sailing plan if you need to.

Easy to get boat envy when you’re on something a fraction of the size 😂 I appreciate how hard it is to keep a boat in good knick.

Is there an option to sit out on the windward hull? You'd be able to unfoil the main and get even more speed out of it
Safer to sheet in during jibe - the sail can't slam across when you come through the wind.
1:32 Had to rewatch that, I thought you had some special unrolling system for the trampolines 😅
Haha. Now I’ve seen it I can’t unsee it.
Awesome fun out on the water!! Well done guys.
She’s getting there 😆
The Hobie TI is the perfect boat to teach sailing but don't you just wish you had a spinnaker pole on those downwind legs! Do you store your sail furled, I think I see a little bit of a permanent twist in the nr. 1 batten? Nice job and thanks for posting.
You are absolutely right about the spinnaker pole. I keep saying we need to get one.
And yes, we keep it furled. But I better check on that twist. Thanks.
Looks like maybe 20km/h winds but not near 25 knots (gust maybe). Mast barely bent (plus not reefed much) and not many white caps.
Have you tried these home made TI improvements? They might solve your issues. ruclips.net/video/3UuPwA7AygI/видео.htmlsi=OhKWn67P9-QfTqG1
That looks like so much fun!
Thanks for posting the video! Im definitely getting one of these !
Enjoy!
TY. Very informative
"When in doubt, let it out." Meaning, if you're overpowered (or things are just going wonky) let out the main = sheet out. Great video.
no furling kits in Oz for Hobie sail kyaks until xmas apparently they broke the body cast and have moved to a new location ..Hobie groovers...🎉
Thanks for the update.
as a hobby kyak sailor I love ya vision ..Hobie always love at first flight 🎉🎉
sure
It would be a VERY good idea to add some “keep out” lines (paracord) from the bow handle to the forward aka. They will prevent you from capsizing in the (somewhat likely) event that you snap a plastic bolt that keep the ama out.
VERY good tip. Thanks.
I dont understand
Almost adopted a TI this spring. But opted to increase our smaller boat armada instead. Next year.
Hobie luv on every flight 🎉
✈️
yee haww i have a 2009 single and ive gotten more fish off of it in 6 years vs 20 years of no boat. flipped it once 20mph wind... gust up to 30mph. what a bitch to upright. make sure you have extra rope.my mast pops out every time i try to furl my sail. standing up to roll it in by hand at speed defiantly gets your blood flowing.
hey kyak groovers..I created a tri_maran kayak with my passport...reckon it's the bees knees sailed up and flys like a hobie cat does...luv from noosa heads down under ...oh nice footage too ... remember hobie luv at first flight 🎉
These are sweet! Need more space for more boats 😢
Haha. Same here.
I found that if you tie your main sheet and furling sheet together it makes it much easier to manage the lines especially in stronger winds. Looking forward to future videos.
Great tip!
I got a longer main sheet, tied the ends together, then tie the furling line aft of that knot. That way you can get complete control from either seat.
Yes, I've been doing that since my first Island in 2009. Less rope confusion!
Vitesse max km/h
Love it. Keep the TI videos coming 😁
I think the one at 1:41 is my favorite. Nice lines and the bow sprit.
She’s a beauty. Classic cuda.
Did you get any fish?
Of course not 😂
Sheeting in or out, does the same thing as changing course more on or more off the wind. Decide which is more important - holding the same course or not.
Thats very impressive , considerig how Fucking windy it looks ;-) ...hehe..sailing is fun ! and she does point better than i would have expected ... very cool
Love the sail and excellence narration. Keep the TI videos coming!
Thank you.
We just bought a set of AI's and go out nearly every day. Love it. I was just sitting here on the shoreline watching my 9yr old boy out sailing. He's gottwn very good!
That’s great! Sailing is fun.
Bare Dyneema is slick. You want a covered rope that will "fuzz" as this is easier on the hands for gripping and comfort.
Goose... Swan... Duck... whatever
Just tack already
What a lovely day on the water. It sounds like you are enjoying yourself.
Thanks. It was so nice. I’m not sure what we will do when winter hits 😅
3:45 "See the duck over over there?" "That's a swan" "Whatever... So now you're gonna tack." "So how do I do that?" 4:43 "... you gotta be point at the goose." "Swan." "Whatever..." 🤣 Thanks for the video! I learned a bunch just from this short clip!
🤣 that made us laugh too watching it back. Thanks for your comment. We’re happy to hear someone learnt something! 😂
Good video. Enjoy the sail. Spent all day in my TI kicking around the Florida Keys. Love the TI.
Your videos of the Florida Keys look so beautiful!
Hobie TI's are junk. THEY ARE NOT GREAT LITTLE BOATS. They are listed as " FLOATING DEVICE" Way overrated and overpriced crap. Comes with a lousy CE SAFETY RATING "D'". Who doesn't know what that means, look it up. Don't waste your hard earned money on that thing. If you want something trustworthy and solid, get yourself a WINDRIDER 17. Bin there, done exactly that.
They look good. But not for us. Too heavy and expensive and almost impossible to find any for sale around here. We are happy with our Hobie. We like that we can also use it as a kayak. Each to their own.
@@AnyTideAnywhere Hello.... Reason for hard to find is because people who have a Windrider 17 don't sell. If you lucky enough to find one, you'll see that they are not more expansive than a TI. Be super careful with your TI. Don't trust that thing not one bit. Safe travels and always fair winds. Greetings.
Thank you.
OEM tramps would probably be more like a net?
Yeah, I think they would made with better materials that let the water (and wind) through.
Right is starboard...
Wish that was me going from South Africa to UK 7000 miles. Unfairly deported back to South Africa. AFTER six years in Britain. High unemployment rate in South Africa. Grand parents from Britain.
Feel for ya
Shame they let all the immigrants in by dover but deport the good hard working people instead.
You must be white
Those don't look like the Hobie trampolines.
You’re right. They’re not Hobie tramps, unfortunately. I kinda wish we forked out the extra $$ for the Hobie ones.
@@AnyTideAnywhereGo buy some dynema and weave your own.
@@ralphjansen9205I might do a video on weaving actually. Thanks.
Nice way to end a day. Agreed, those tramps should drain better. The stock ones are little more meshy to allow water through by the look of it. I think it is time to replace my sheets as well. Will check in to dyneema. Thanks for the footage and thoughts on dyneema.
Thanks for your comment. Yes we probably should’ve gone with other tramps. Our sheets have a Dyneema core. Dyneema probably isn’t quite right for hobie sheets as it does not have a lot of give. We found the hobie rope frayed too much but I imagine good dinghy sheets should work.
I’m trying to convince my wife to let me get one of these
Fingers crossed. You should definitely get one!
Why bother, just buy it. She is not going to sail with you, is she? My wife is thankful if I tell her that I will be buying something. She doesn't like surprises.
Was there water in the hull and/or amas? Bow and port side ama was submerging.
Yes, that explains the water in the hull! The bow was submerged for a short period because of the wave behind us pushing us into the wave in front. It doesn’t happen often. No water in the almas.
@@AnyTideAnywhere Hobie really should make these sea Kayaks more watertight. It's dangerous and it's going to result in someone's death at some point. They should supply a fitted neoprene stretch cover for under that front hatch and the rim should be lipped. It would cost them next to nothing to do it.
Looking good! The TI can really fly. Recommend always wearing a life jacket. The TI roller reefing system makes it easy to adjust how much sail you have up, even while under sail. Enjoy a bunch of TI videos here: www.youtube.com/@seewind/videos
Thanks. Great videos. And, yes, I always recommend a life jacket too. I’m glad I went back for it! 😅
Agree about the tramps. When the wind picks up, the windward tramp can almost act like its own sail and lift up. Rolling them up helps keep the boat flatter. Love these yaks. Great for camping.
Yes, good point about the tramps.
Flying! Looking great. Keep the TI videos coming!
Thanks. That's the plan! 🤞🏼
Looking great! Keep the TI videos coming!
Thanks!
Love seeing you sneak through the trees.
It was lovely sailing through the gum trees. Gotta watch the mast, though 😅
Looks like great fun and also looks like a nice setup
Thank you. So much fun!
Love it! The TI was flying. Keep the videos coming!
Thanks! I’m hoping to get on the water tomorrow and get more footage. 🤞🏼
Now that's cool. Put some hydrofoils on it and you'd really be flying. Wish i knew how to sail, I'd be out there too.
Haha. Great idea. Crazy enough that we might just try it 🤣
