My interpretation of the lyrics, mostly taken from Dante's other work. If someone is better at this, i'd love to hear your interpretation Prelude: Dante met the girl he was long in love with since they were 9 years old, but they couldn't be together because of the difference in social statuses(comparable to Romeo & Juliet). After meeting her he runs off to his room and has a vivid dream about her: E pensando di lei Mi sopragiunse uno soave sonno (angels voice) And thinking of her Sweet sleep overcame me Ego dominus tuus Vide cor tuum I am your master Behold your heart > In his sleep he sees the vision of "love". E d’sto core ardendo Cor tuum And of this burning heart, your heart > The burning heart is Dante's love for Beatrice. Lei paaventosa, umilmente pascea (Dante) She trembling, humbly eats > The vision of "love" shows Dante's love to Beatrice which she accepts. Appreso gir lo ne vedea piangendo (Beatrice) Weeping, I saw him then depart from me > She felt Dante's immeasurable love but couldn't live with the feeling of not being together, she perished at the age of 24. La letizia si convertia In amarissimo pianto (Dante) Joy is converted To bitterest tears > He learns of her death and falls into a deep depression. This song touched me to tears when I heard it in Hanibal, it still do! And i dont cry easly. I thought then it was part of an old Italian opera or church music from Vatican. I was amazed when I figured it was not created by some famous componist of music in the 1700-1800's.
