Episode 1 Hidden History NY - Split Rock
*Significance
That Kingsbridge Road station was in what I call Little Kingsbridge
There is a path under there now, but it used to be a great place to go and drink beer 😂
New York or bust 😊
I grew up in Eastchester, didn't drive because I was young but I remember going to various places with my parents, this brings back some very good memories, what an excellent and informative video, thank you!
Very nice review of parts still existing of NYW&B RR. This history omits, however, a proposal from Westchester County to reclaim the railroad and run trains from White Plains to 180th Street in the Bronx, leasing the right-of-way in the Bronx from the City of New York. The plan received an exhaustive review by the engineering firm Parson, Brickenhoff etc which recommended reclaimation. However, New York City mayor, Fiorella LaGuardia, convinced Governor Lehman of NY to veto the plan as he felt it was an intrusion upon his domain by another government agency. As a result those extensive portions of the railroad in Westchester were abandoned. New York City bought the line from 180th Street to Dyre Avenue and connected it to the existing subway system.
These nywb raised dirt berms appear to have been built intially as wooden trestles, perhaps coated in tar, before being buried in soil. Anyone have any further informayion? Photos? Of ghe vondtruction, abd particularly the removal.
I used to work for Sperry Rail Service on car SRS 125 I have many fond memories working for them.
in 1930's were there ever houses here
Tomorrow is the 380th anniversary of the massacre. 1643-2023 August 20. RIP Anne.
Damn you. You sent me down the rabbit hole of the internet. Wound up at the Heathcote bypass. :)
Just this noon I discovered this place and took several photos, because it seemed to me that it contained a great story, I came home, and I got my hands on google. And I found you! Good job and I will go more often and plant seeds in the places
Nice piece, I knew that embankment was there since I was a kid.
I remember seeing the 3rd st station. It used to be a company called Litton back in the 80s.
Do any tracks, even if buried in pavement, still exist?
Drew King, You are a perfect example of an Urban Explorer. You give them a good name. Unlike too many others who make us out to be rats.
Wow Thanks for the memories.. I lived nearby when I 95 was being built.
Very cool!
MOOR wow i thought that was a myth ...
i use to sit across from the pizza shop and wounder what was that
$1M/mile in 1909 = $30M today in 2022 Meanwhile back on the ranch, a mile of the new 2 mile Second Ave subway cost $2.5B/mile.
I loved this video! I was born at Mount Vernon Hospital in 1950 and my parents and I lived in an apartment on Bedford Avenue from 1950-1954 when we moved into a house they purchased in Yonkers. My maternal grandfather owned a junk yard in Mount Vernon for many years of which I still have memories. Please keep the wonderful videos coming that reinforce my aging memories! Thanks 😀
I grew up there, played in that park on Lorraine ave.... Metro North used to have a stop at columbus ave. What rail line was this ? Was it built above the metro north tracks ?
Vicki C knows her stuff. She's an expert.
I like these videos. should do more of them. I like pieces of History. 👍👍
Loved this video!
The Jackson 5 appeared there in the 70s.
I grew up in Mount Vernon NY in the 50 and60! Miss it till this day!
Love your channel dude
Love the videos!
My family lived on Claremont Place for decades. No idea this was there. I love you for bringing this information to us. Amazing! Truly amazing.
you should check out MT Vernon west station if u haven't it actually used to run down mcquestern parkway but they changed it in 1900s
Anne Hutchinson and her family were massacred by local tribes in that area. 16 people. Her daughter survived by hiding in that rock.
I often wondered about that structure. Thanks for sharing!
I remember as a boy walking over that bridge up to the old Boston Westchester station just at the New Rochelle. Nice hike from 7th Avenue.
Nice and Creative Videos, This is really my favourite channel.:). I really glad to see your post and your world was so brilliant.I decided to share them with my friends. Thanks for sharing. I used to live not too far from there on Mt. Vernon. I wish I'd known about this when I was young.
Great to see another show coming right up!!!
The absorbing bill dimensionally head because hawk genotypically radiate apud a handy olive. low, macabre poet
It's NOT ART!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's BLACK-LIVES-MATTER destruction!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just found this. As a model railroader and former Mount Vernon resident, I feel the loss too. Thanks for sharing.
There is so much art now. Great shots of them you have here 📸👀👍🎶
Has this project been completed ?
Thank you. I would have never found how to access this rock, though as a female I have doubts about safely traveling that trail which you took. Years ago I figured it wasn't Worth the safety risk of trying to pull the car over on the exit ramp from the Hutch northbound onto the I95. Cars are traveling at a good 65 mph and it just seemed too risky. So I am living the experience through your video. Thank you again. Btw if you do return, what compass direction do you estimate the split of the rock to be? Also estimates of height and width would be nice too. Safe travels!
And heed the warnings, folks! I lost a classmate in junior high school on those tracks -- a smart kid who decided he'd rather be cool, and died playing chicken with a train 😒
I used to live on Pearsall Drive, and used to see the embankment alongside Lorraine Avenue all the time, and I wondered why it was there. I never knew that a railroad ran where Lorraine Terrace and Pearsall Drive are now until much later, though i could see some kind of continuity between the two streets.
When I was a Cub Scout in 1970, Split Rock was a field trip. I don’t remember any fencing around it.
Growing up around that area it is hard to imagine a railroad going through the area of Pelham, Mt. Vernon to The Dyer Ave. Station in The Bronx. Before Moses began dividing neighborhoods, Robert, not the other guy, with highways, like The Cross Bronx Express Way railroads did that. Looking at The Town of Pelham which was at one time 3 villages, Pelham Manor, Pelham Heights and North Pelham. Real Estate and economic statues where definitely influenced by the two rail crossings. The New Haven Line was the boundary between The Heights and The North, and the old NYW&W influenced the land in the upper northern section of North Pelham. After all we all now the term being born on the wrong side of the tracks or the poor side of town is often across the tracks.
Lot of history there. The Thanksgiving morning game between New Rochelle High and Iona Prep was played there and televised on NY WPIX. There was a semi pro football team that played there in the 60's. Yale great Chuck Mercine played there after being cut by The Giants because coach Allie Sherman didn't think Ivy Leaguers could play in the NFL. Vince Lombardi signed him late in the 67 season. Chuck made a critical pass on The Packers winning drive in the Ice Bowl. Stop at Lou's Hot Dog truck been parked around Memorial Stadium and Glover Field since the 1960's!
Why are such intriguing presentations centered around the economic aspect rather than on the actual building processes required for such monumental achievement in time past. which can not in its magnitude be achieved today despite our modern technologies in construction. hundreds of miles had to be plan out for to be excavated expert people for such considerations needed for such coordinated execution would have taken years to plan at cost materials productions and transportation of such materials and byproduct of removal and the creative man power in the time frame presented are outrageously so unrealistic one can not help but conclude it to be a fabrication of sort which did not happen but yet existed prior to so called white people arrival what are we missing beside the truth?
