Suzuki Sidekick Puts a Hole In The Block (re-edited)
did a little burnout in my 1995 Suzuki sidekick, blew the 1.6l 16 valve motor when a connecting rod went through the side of the block and made a hole at 6500 rpm. And then I tore it down near the end to look at the carnage.
Was originally uploaded in April but I re-edited it since it wasn't the greatest.

    I never see much need to push basically any engine more than what it would put out at sea level. Heavy loads could probably benefit by a small percentage in boost but I want an absolutely bulletproof rig to make from what I already have.

    I hate the idea of pushing a 6.9l IDI more than 15psi max just for longevity. No boost is definitely the better deal for that, as they're overbuilt from the factory. I like that Hypermax, Banks, ATS and now a new IDI support company offers bolt on turbo kits, I would only build my own completely remote mounted turbo kit on this and my 300I6 Bullnose rigs.

    IDI's are my favorite diesel engines. Especially the 6.9l. N/A, they're slow but just bloody well run forever with regular oil changes.

    Thanks for doing this vid. Good stuff. I found out today an old friend of mine took possession of 99 RMK 700 in a trade for a set of golf clubs. From what he knows, it needs a seal in the chain case or something but the engine is solid. I ride a 2023 Indy 650 ADV . How is the cooling on these old RMKs? Is it a decent trail /ice fishing sled? Probably better than golf clubs I guess. LOL

    • @AlecsAdaptationsYT
      @AlecsAdaptationsYT 2 месяца назад

      The cooling is really good on these sleds, If my buddies newer sleds break down up the mountain I'm always the one in the group that pulls them out since it doesn't need much snow to keep cool.

  • @nagyandras8857
    @nagyandras8857 4 месяца назад

    IDI engines are good, AND fast. now that may sound a wee tiny bit like jackshite. but hear me out. These engines relay on a quite high compression from the pistons to get em started. they need proper glow plugs otherwise it won't even ever the hell start up even in the middle of the hottest summer. how ever, IDI engines CAN rev. unlike most TDI engines. specifically them germans made some impressive ones, 6k and even 6.5K rpm redline after a bit of tweeeeeking is perfectly fine for them. the key is the injection pump. as the revs climb that pump needs to start injecting sooner. as the injected volume increases, it allso needs more time to deliver it. people who are not quite fancy with them IDI engines simply think pushing more air, higher pressure, more flow, and just dumping a bucket of fuel in will make it automagically work. what happens is, that the time it takes to inject the elevated amount increases, and despite having sufficient air, the fuel will not burn. yer gona roll coal, but you ain't gona be fast. so here is what you do : you find the bigggggest injection nozzles you can. the absolute largest ones you can get your hands on. you find a pump that is capable to deliver least twice the amount you need for a clean burn at your elevated air volumes. you lift the pressure too - not familiar whit 'murricane shite, euro susually had 160-180 bar for these, very safe to get to 200-210 bar- , and you do make the most absolute sure your pump can coop with least 40 degreees of freedom in injection timing. and then, a well setup IDI should produce around an easy 100 hp per liter on about 1.5 bar boost no amount of turbo will make up for what the pump and injectors lack. the injection window is too large. hence you may get some grunt in low revs, but lack of power at high revs. if the fueling is okay, you can go for high revs and make sure very raw horsepower.

    You can't "turn up" the factory pump enough to make dual turbos do much of anything on the IDI's. If you want real power you need to either buy or rebuild your pump and enlarge the internals in the pump. There are places that you can get that stuff. I think the factory pump flows something around 80-90 CC or something like that, been a while since I messed with these a lot, however you can get more than double that out of those pumps. I put a 110cc on my 7.3 Turbo IDI before I sold it. If you are going to put two turbos on a diesel like that and want to get more power you should put them in a compound arrangement. That increases the total boost assuming you have the fuel spin them. I got myself into this trouble with my Turbo IDI which I bought with a bad turbo. I bought a turbo that I was told was a direct replacement only bigger. The asshole I bought it from saw a NOOB a mile away and cheated me good. The turbo was bigger, a LOT bigger and even with the 110cc pump it would produce about 5psi of boost if you were going up a hill with your foot denting the firewall. Those engines can be made to put out decent power 350hp 600torque but it's not cheap. You will spend more getting that amount of power out of an IDI than you would if you bought a 5.9 and the parts to get it to the same power. Personally I liked the IDI's but they aren't powerhouses without a fair bit of cash and I believe they have a lower ceiling than the 5.9 unless you retrofit a P-pump to it. Now if you want to spend 10-15k on a pump and retrofit the heads to accept the Cummins injectors along with the powerstroke rods and pistons you could probably push the 7.3 into 4 digits or at least close. Don't know how long it would live there but it's going to cost you 20-25k on the conservative side. Personally I would upgrade the pump to a 120-130cc pump, head studs, decent turbo, and intercooler, and let it live at the 275hp or so you will have there.

    That's a pretty awesome turbo setup, I want to do something like that to mine. The factory turbo system is horrible. I will tell you this though, 15psi on an IDI will beat a stock 7.3 powerstroke, but only if you give it more fuel and more RPM. The factory pumps are super limiting. I have the R&D 90cc pump in mine as well as aftermarket valve springs, a big cam, and big injectors, and it makes a huge difference. Having full power up to 4200rpm is awesome.
