Iraklion AS Tour 1993

This is a driving tour of Iraklion Air Station in Crete, Greece in October 1993. The base was to be closed in June 1994. Many people had already departed and buildings were being closed up. Creaking old 1981 Plymouth Reliant noises but otherwise a good copy from an old VHS tape.
I was there in 93, I work in the PMEL Lab
My husband was assigned there in 1972 _ 73. It was our favorite assignment. The people living there were so gracious and friendly. The scenery and ancient history were awesome. Our children learned to swim in the Mediterranean.
Thanks great video.
I was stationed at Hellenikon AB Greece in the late 70s. During the Hostage Crisis. We had a few Cable Antenna team up at Iraklion. Nice trip.
Does anyone remember the emission frequency of the Medium Wave radio station of the Base ???
My dad was stationed at Iraklion AB from 1970 to 1972. I was in 3rd and 4th grade but remember it well. We kids has free range of the base and no one ever knew where we were. Eating coffee ice cream on the beach, going to see Yellow Submarine at the base theater, being in a blended 3rd/4th grade class because there weren't enough teachers (hello, Mrs. Maxwell!). We cut a hole in the fence behind base housing (first circle going straight) so we could crawl under the fence and steal grapes from the grape orchard. Good times...
I think it was wonderful for younger kids. Mine did 1st through 4th grade. Nice and safe place. Didn't have McDonalds or other fast food till they were older. Beach nearby and slow traffic so could ride bikes safely. Would love to go back in time and appreciate it more!
Nice video Fred. Should have done one for Hellenikon before we moved to Crete. Sue and I really loved Greece.😄 Glenn
Great video. My father-in-law was stationed there in the early 70s. He speaks of his time there fondly and often mentions the best pork chops he ever had on "pork chop hill." But said he can't remember the actual name of the restaurant. We are doing a family trip there later this year and would love to track this place or restaurant down. If it still exists... any help?
I almost got stationed there in 83, but they deleted my slot (I was a loggie). So insteadI took an assignment to TJ Spain, which was nice, but I was a little disappointed with not going to Crete
I heard TJ Spain was nice too. You missed out on a great tour but I hope you had others to enjoy. Life is short so feel good about all the adventures!
Oh my God! I cannot bear the defunctioning of our beloved american base in Herakleion. The sorrow and grief are insurmountable. Please americans come back, we need you. Now who is going to spy on our communications ? I am very sad that you left.
Here in Greece, we all suffer from acute depression owing to the closing of the american bases in Herakleio and New Makri. He are on intensive medication with anti-depressants to overcome the closing. We pray to the Almighty that the whole planet Earth becomes a huge american base.
Just whrite"abandon american base herakleion crete"and you will see
I'm from this place and to see your video how it was and how that place's became makes me very sade my friend
It's been almost 20 years since I've been there and it's still best place I ever lived. I think about returning just to visit it but I'm afraid I will be disappointed.
@@fredroberto6 Everything inside the American base is destroyed all the buildings Are vandalized The nature's became a jungle hiding even the buildings sometimes I believe you will be very disappointed to see all this
@Fred Roberto nice video!! Unfortunately it's like said@@GKONPANA .... totally ruined...

Was there from 89-91. Lots of great memories on Kriti!!!
Lived here in ~ 81 to 84. What a great memory and a lot of fun to see it again. Thank you!
Base switchboard building. I spent the summers of 82 and 83 working there, with Harry Rolewicz in the office in the back. Wonderful times.
thank you very much!!!!
You're very welcome. Your comment showed up in my email so I just reviewed this old video again. Love to go back some day!
You can't know the joy these bring if you hadn't been there. Thanks for putting these up.
Great video! I was also on the Tropo site Mt. Edheri stationed at Iraklion AS in 91-92 where I met and married my wife. My name is Mark Hart and I know you Fred. You were in my squadron and friends with my father-in-law Richard King. My wife and I are going to go over there this year in August to stay on Crete and visit our old stomping grounds to celebrate our 25 year wedding anniversary. So hooefully we'll get some new videos of the area now.
Hey Mark. I hear you're doing well. I still stay in touch some with Rich King. We're in Charleston SC now.

@@markhart1656 Hello. Do you remember the emission frequency of the Medium Wave radio station of the Base ???
I was in the 2115th CS from '89-'91 and worked in the same building (when Job Control), the rest of the time I was up on Mnt.
I got there in October of 1990. Left in June 94. Just came back from a week in Santorini which was great but kinda wished I made it over to Crete. What was your name?
Hank, I was a ground radio troop. I left Crete May of '91. I recall towards the end of my tour job control was moved to another building close to the commissary.
@@Commsprepper Yep, 2115 CS Job Control did move over to one of the buildings toward the commissary. It was one of the buildings by the dorms.
Dad was a Power Pro troop on that hill 72 to 74 or some such. I was in 8th and 9th grade.
@@Commsprepperhello. Do you remember maybe, the emission frequency of the Medium Wave radio station of the Base ??
