I owned and played this game all the way through when it first came out. I was in high school at the time. I threw out my old copy some years ago during a move, and just recently bought it back to put into my Big Box collection. I'm glad to have it again.

My original playthrough on WC was on an Amiga, with a copy giving to me by my Uncle. It had no instructions, we had no idea how to Autopilot lol. That made it for a loooong mission.

It's kinda weird how the whole HOTAS thing seems to have become the default starting point for people getting into these games. I think that happened some time in the past 5-10 years or so? Extra controllers, in my experience at least, were things for hardcore enthusiasts back then. People go on about the cost and all the plastic crap you "have" to buy, but just the T16K with it's twist and built-in slider (and a keyboard obviously) is perfectly fine for nearly every flight sim past and present. TBF, the T16K at $80 is really the maximum they can get away with charging for that one, but still. I guess this is also my mandatory engagement comment for Tachyon :p -- Appreciate the work you put into these.

There's a new X-Wing Alliance Upgrade Project update, making it even crisper on modern systems. I think you might enjoy making a video of something like that for a change, and I know I would appreciate watching it. :)

This brings back memories. I played Wing Commander I back in the day, all the way to the end, as I'm sure everyone did. The sound effects were satisfying, althought, as everyone should know, there is no sound in space. 🤣 On the other hand, no sound would be boring.

I'm pretty sure the joystick issues which affects WC1, WC2 and Privateer is a problem related to dosbox or modern hardware. I do not remember the controls being so imprecise when I originally played it back in the day. The joystick in dosbox seems almost like playing with arrow keys only, you are either moving at full speed or not at all, and with a huge dead zone. Maybe someone with original hardware could confirm. The main problem I remember back then was cheap joysticks drifting and needing to be recalibrated often. I think the WC games are an excellent candidate for a remaster/remake just to make it work well on modern hardware, like what Beamdog did with the Baldur's Gate series.

"Oh, I have to polarise my shields? I just want to shoot some tie fighters!" There is the exact reason why the genre collapsed. A lot of people just want to shoot some Tie Fighters, but the joy of these games is giving the player a lot of control over their vehicle. To make the tactical decision over energy allocation and shield facings and things like that (and in Freespace, one never really needed to know all of the targeting buttons, forward, backwards, nearest hostile, craft targeting my target and next subsystem were all you needed. The rest were just fluff.) That's what made they games great because that control allowed, which allowed you to beat the odds. MORE arcadey shooters still let you beat great odds, but it's not really your own doing. It's not really your mastery of the systems. The don't have the depth for that. It's just your ship is beefier than the enemy statistically. And those types of games are flashy but ultimately boring.

Love these vids! I bought & played these games when they came out in the early 90s. Yes using a joy stick was the key to improve targeting. Like others I played WC1 only using a keyboard which was not ideal. I didn't have internet so there were no helpful tips or cheats - Just slogging through each level failing most of the time, but learning new strategies. So frustrating & hard yet exhilarating when successful. I vote for you doing a video for Wing Commander 3. It was the first game in that era (that I'm aware of) with video cut scenes & real actors. I was blown away at how cool that was at the time. All I wanted to do was play WC at every opportunity. Thanks for the videos!

I played this game back when it came out as a kid and absolutely loved it. Then a few years ago I bought it again on an old games website and tried to play on the dos simulator and it was much faster than i remembered. I'm not sure if it's cause I'm now old and no longer have reflexes of a kid, or that my computer back then sucked so much it slowed down the gameplay and ironically made the game easier, but replaying the game I could barely get past the first system because I had absolutely no way to shoot down anything with my terrible aim. And I now just play old rpgs cause at least those games don't require me to be actually good at video games...

Hey, you didn't appreciate the power management and deflecto... being real for a sec, I loved the original game but dang, if you miss that deflector switching, you're also the kind of person who won't play a game like Starcraft 2 or League of Legends because it's "too easy".

I loved X-Wing at the time, though most of the frustrations I had are the same ones you picked up on. Tie Fighter progressed the series but it was X-Wing Alliance in particular I thought was really excellent. There's still quite the modding community improving its visuals - I highly recommend playing it.

Having played this game, there is one and only one thing that annoyed me to frustration outside the odd mission here or there. Dogfighting in Asteroid Fields was bad. Just, seriously bad. Because the ships are sprite based, and games from that era had sprite limits, you could find yourself firing just one of your guns, but your energy depleted like it was all of them. Performance tended to tank during these bits too. Not the worst experience Ive had playing games but damn close.

The RUclips algorithm has its arcane ways, but one thing that I keep hearing is it doesn't like long breaks between videos. Perhaps it matters less if you already have a pretty big channel with plenty of subscribers because you already have good reach, but it can really slow down the growth of a channel. That said, I hope it doesn't discourage you. Your videos are of good quality and your previous video still got views that are a multiple of your subscriber base. All in all good considering the age of your channel and the fact space sim retrospectives have got to be pretty niche. If you enjoy making these, keep at it. I'm sure as you go you'll also learn how to streamline their production to get them out more quickly. You mentioned Grim Beard, I think in your previous video. Keep in mind he started out about a decade ago with roughly 10 minute videos and it took him a long time to reach the point of making 1 hour plus videos at a consistent pace. In a way you jumped straight at the deep end, but made it stick.

you have to remember, as much as wing commander 2 was such a high budget game, PCs at the time were weak af. This was a technological marvel at the time considering some of the best pcs at the times were intel 386s (not even 486s, which would have handled this game much better). Voiced cutscenes with a deep story in a flight sim? Even with some of the story issues, this was a new concept at the time, which most people who play it today could never understand. People today think 16GB of ram isnt enough, pcs at the time were like max 128MB of ram and that was only on the super high end ones that cost 3000 bucks. This is why youngsters who werent around when games like this came out can never understand just how amazing they actually were for their era.

i played WC1 when it first came out, secret missions 1 + 2 and WC2 as well. I can say for a fact that the first time i played WC2 it was one of the greatest gaming experiences I ever had, and even though its dated as hell even to say PS1 standards, I still think its one of the greatest pc games ever made.
