The Future of Computation
Peter McMahon, Applied and Engineering Physics, studies how physical processes can be harnessed to do extremely difficult computational tasks. He’s looking forward to the future computer that will enable the exploration of ideas that have not been possible before. The McMahon lab concentrates on superconducting circuits and quantum optical devices.

Intelligent Control for Autonomous Robots
Просмотров 8804 года назад
Silvia Ferrari, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, is equipping autonomous robots with an intelligence to go where man or woman may not be able to go-dangerous environments, complex situations under water or in the air. These robots can be quick with decision making and physical speed. And they can collaborate with each other. Transcript available at research.cornell.edu/sites/default/files/...
Searching for Quantum Gravity
Просмотров 1,6 тыс.4 года назад
Quantum gravity is one of the most intriguing and longstanding mysteries of the universe. Why is it important? Thomas Hartman, Physics, points to understanding the constituents of matter, their interactions, and the role gravity plays. “We understand the problem of weakly interacting constituents of matter. That’s when particles only occasionally collide with each other and interact. But with s...

Studying Sugars at the Nanoscale
Просмотров 6274 года назад
Matthew J. Paszek, Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, studies the glycocalyx-sugars that cover our cells. He has found that, in cancer cells, the glycocalyx can expand dramatically, affecting cell signaling and leading to more aggressive cancers. Transcript available at research.cornell.edu/sites/default/files/Paszek transcript.txt. Read more Cornell Research at research.cornell.edu/.
A Window into Cell Growth

A tiny transparent roundworm, C. elegans, allows Jun Liu to study in live time how cells communicate as they divide and differentiate as an organism grows. Liu, professor of molecular biology and genetics at Cornell University, received a multimillion dollar grant from the NIH for promising research on a protein signaling pathway crucial to bone and cardiovascular development.
