Michael Howard Studios is the premier professional acting studio for theater, film, and television. Founded in 1953 by actor and director Michael Howard, a protege of both Sanford Meisner at the Neighborhood Playhouse and Lee Strasberg at the Actors Studio, it is the longest running, privately-owned acting Studio in New York. Michael established his Studio grounded in the dramatic innovations of Konstantin Stanislavski. The Studio has evolved to incorporate many schools of thought and techniques from around the world. Its core belief is to help actors develop a technique - a method which is truly individual.

Michael Howard Lecture Part Two, Michael Howard Studios, July 2008
i can just listen to her talk forever and ever. THIS is real sustaining of audience attention. not the tricks that some RUclipsrs pass around on how to 'keep their audience glued' - all just editing tricks but without providing any real value- they are destroying our focus, and changing the way our brains work. THIS is really the power of many years of solid training.
She is amazing ❤❤❤ I love her energy
Amazing - is there anyway you could upload the whole presentation?
She changed the way I think. I will never be the same again. Simply amazing.
Thanks. Helpful.
Wow! Powerful! I've not had an experience that drastic before.
I’ve taken several workshops with Patsy specializing in the voice and Shakespeare, merging the two. I love her so much. She changed my life. Thank you Patsy ❤️
this is so enlightening, thank you - when I look at my performance videos, I am in 1rt, rounded shoulders, clearly striken by fear, and when I try to pull myself together and overcome the fear I feel (and probably look) domineering but I feel (and look) completely fake. Not me. I wish I could keep the presence even when utterly scared.
Use ormus. You gonna be in second circle all day
I love you Patsy Rodenburg.
My teacher at drama school. Amazing, awesome, totally inspiring. Thank you Patsy.
Brilliant observations… her students are so lucky…
actors are already glorified by society, we dont need them more, we need more scientists
I am so sick of people bludgeoning us to be "in the present"! This theatrical banality wore out its usefulness decades ago!
Where would you rather be then?
Very interesting. Basing on my experience, it could be good to specify that she is talking about the actor's circles, not the character's. The character can be in first or third circle but the inner actor should be always in second, to be open and reactive to all the impulses coming from outside and inside him.
Wow!
Circles - sounds like a mystical way of describing (1) Talking to oneself, (2) Engaging with another person and (3) Addressing a crowd.
powerful.
❤❤❤❤
This touches me deeply every time I come back to see this video.
I did a production of Howard Barker's "Judith" at The Old Globe Theatre in San Diego at the end of my graduate school years. Judith makes a sound after she kills Holofernes. And, the director, Matt August, wanted it to be a sound of deep guttural loss. I did what he asked. My mother came to see it and she was furious with me afterwards. She said, "No mother should ever have to hear her child make that sound!" That's why I do theatre.
So amazing
foundations of many theatre schools. Where I went to school, Patsy's work was introduced to us and we starting going over the principals of 1st 2nd and 3rd circle
tears
"It is the circle of equality" Probably the most profound 10 minutes you'll ever watch. The ideas in this can sustain you for a long time and not just in the performing arts.
its the ringing for me
This is absolutely incredible.
lush use this philosophy when training employees on how to build rapport and sell products, so i always assumed it was a training tool... little did i know it was for theater!! now i'm sort of upset with how they used it because it's much more interesting in this setting.
"Second circle is..circle of equality"... I love this concept!
She is so real, genuine and insightful. Thank you for making Patsy's talk accessible.
Wow , speechless. All I can say is wow.
I first saw this video ten years ago and every so often, I search for it and still get choked up every time. Bless HER for sharing this.
Same with me.
So perceptive. Just so brilliant. Thank you, Ms. Rodeburg.
So much knowledge given in 10 minutes
Brilliant! This makes so much sense!
1,2,3!
An Alexander lesson will put you into 2nd circle.
So what is being in second circle? How do you be in second circle? What does circle of equality mean? Is third circle just too loud? And first quiet?
banja First Circle is boring and too introverted. Third is too bombastic and over-the-top. Both exclude the audience. Second Circle includes the audience, is present, clear, and energised.
Well, good observations and interesting view on us. Yes, this second circle is hard. Buddhists call it mindfulness. It's work and it's very fine.
Her three circles are rehashed from David deida ‘s work on the three stages of human development in the “Way of the Superior Man’
I don't get it 😥 1st 2nd 3rd circle? 2nd being present? But I don't have a grip on what being present means.
Being "present" means being aware of what's going on. Not in your head, which I think 1rst and 3rd circles are both "in your head" things.
The best way to understand what "being present" means, is to explore what it means yourself. A book or definition only does that much - you only fully understand it if you explore it actively. I agree with what Rich Cook said - that is pretty much the definition to "being present."
This video is part of a larger series ("Shakespeare in the Present" I think that's what it's called). In this recorded workshop there are exercises that explore all of these circles. It's simple but great work. I was in the room during this one-week workshop. She's fantastic. She also wrote a book on the subject called "The Second Circle."
Awesome teacher
I love love love this adn it is exactly how I teach! IT is great to see this.
Thank you .mam
This is amazing! I tend to be in 1st circle A lot due to me not wanting to be in 3rd circle. I'm afraid that I'm doing too much.
Same! 🖐
simply brilliant!
i was thinking about quitting acting. this is just what i needed to remind me why i love acting.
Keep going friend ❤❤❤
Strong delivery. Brilliant
What does she mean about the two stories
This talk is so unbelievably powerful. I feel completely empowered as an actor and performer. The reminder is so beautiful and so fundamental. Thank you.
Excellent!
