    Great video explanation! I can't tell you how many customers say start with one and plate up to two. Can't happen. If a design truly needs a 2 ounce finish it must begin with 2 ounces of base copper material.

      Yes, this would be an ideal solution as not only would we have a completely filled hole using a plated ‘filler’, but it would help in terms of both electrical and thermal performance (increased heat dissipation for example). However, to copper fill a through hole, like a via hole, so that we have a complete deposit without voids is extremely difficult to achieve. The reason being that the plating rate (speed at which copper ions are deposited and thus building up the copper deposit) is faster at the surface and it slows as we enter into the hole. Therefore a typical problem in trying to do this is the presence of voids within the copper deposit / centre of the hole which leads to solution entrapment - something that poses significant long term reliability concerns. Copper filling of holes is often seen in blind via holes (HDI projects), but not in through holes. This level of complexity is a key reason why there are not so many factories that can / do support this type of plating in through holes. BR, Chris Nuttall, Chief Operating Officer NCAB Group
